Paying more than $1500 for a laptop computer is simply stupid. What has this thing got that makes it premium (and what does that mean anyway?) $2500+ ...get the f$%^ outta here! :)
Zak @ Jun 19th 2008 12:29PM
There are lot of reasons. One of the bigger reasons is that it uses a solid state hard drive, which are still very expensive. The reason to use a SSD is generally portability, since it draws less power, has no moving parts and is physically smaller than a standard laptop hard drive. It's also faster, but that's more of a side benefit.
Other reasons are things like it's not cheap to make this type of ultraportable-yet-still-well-featured laptop. Bigger laptops can use cheaper components because they don't have to make everything as small as possible.
jollyllama @ Jun 19th 2008 1:01PM
@Zak,
Can you point to any tests showing real world speed improvements due to SSD? What I remember is that when going head to head on a Macbook Air, the SSD version showed very little if any speed boost over the regular spinner
Ed @ Jun 19th 2008 1:36PM
The SSD they use in the MacBook Air is very slow compared to the one in the X300.

"Lenovo trimmed at least $160"
Maybe it's just me, but isn't 3,225 - 2580 more like $645?
McBUNT @ Jun 19th 2008 8:28AM
McBUNT says NO.
dsgamer21 @ Jun 19th 2008 8:31AM
I think Engadget is trying to show that the price went from $2741.25 to $2580, not $3225 to $2580.
Sada @ Jun 19th 2008 8:20AM
Let's just hope they're selling out all their 65nm parts before 45nm.
wilcoholic @ Jun 19th 2008 8:34AM
Still doesnt beat the Sony Vaio TZ. Any version of the TZ that is even the lowest end.
- Double the battery life
- Smaller
- Better screen
- Better design
- Cardreader for all formats except CF.
And I'm not even talking about the high end versions.
McBUNT @ Jun 19th 2008 8:41AM
wilcoholic, what you should have said was, "And don't even get me started on the high end versions."
Your concept = 7
Your execution = 2
Alexkass @ Jun 19th 2008 8:58AM
but no wireless usb, no ssd, no gps, no thinkvantage.
;) sony 's crap
Richard Lai @ Jun 19th 2008 9:16AM
@wilcoholic: but the TZ's screen case won't even take a gentle tap from a hammer.
wilcoholic @ Jun 19th 2008 9:40AM
Does the X300 have a felica port, i.link connection or a modem though? I think not.
Oh btw the TZ does have SSD. In fact they are even taking it a step further. They are giving you multiple configurations and options to choose from. You are in command on how much you actually want to spent. Dont need a DVD drive? No problem just swap it out for 250gb HDD. You want a SSD and a DVD drive? No problem. HDD+DVD? check. What about different processors? Check, you decide how much you want to pay. They even refreshed the whole line up for more and better options.
But yes I admit its not as sturdy as the thinkpad frm what I've read. But its not like you are exposing this baby to the most extreme conditions.
McBUNT @ Jun 19th 2008 9:51AM
No, what you admit is that your execution stinks!
Kax02 @ Jun 19th 2008 10:42PM
Not exposing it to harsh conditions? says who?
I beat my laptops up all year round because I'm on the go and it's a tool to be used, I'm not looking for a glossy showpiece that I have to handle with gloves, I need something that works and can take abuse because thats just the way it goes when you really use a tool in a mobile environment.
I wouldn't buy a phone strictly for the aesthetics, I would buy it based on the durability of the casing and design because if I'm in a rush and I'm running to make a train and I drop it I don't want to pick it up in multiple pieces, same goes for a laptop, I don't need it falling a short distance and realizing the LCD is broken forcing me to hit ebay to do it myself or hope that an RMA kicks in fast enough to get me up and running again.
wilcoholic @ Jun 19th 2008 8:52AM
Whats the difference?
Jhongerkong @ Jun 19th 2008 6:26PM
Cheaper price?
Thought it was pretty clear.
kz @ Jun 19th 2008 9:06AM
have both. lenovo and sony tz.
sony - nice toy - good for emails video and photos but impossible to work with 8hrs a day; esp keyboard
lenovo - short battery life, bigger; but much better screen for office work; much better build quality; great keyboard! the best laptop i ever had!
wilcoholic @ Jun 19th 2008 9:16AM
Dude stop lying we know you dont have either. Anyone can make a comment that they own all the laptops in the world and they think this laptop from 1970 is the best and DOS is the best OS. It beats Vista and OS X with its eyes closed.
I doubt you ever typed on TZ too cause its an almost full fledge keyboard minus the numpad.
Michael @ Jun 19th 2008 9:06AM
Loving that envelope :)
(Im not an apple fanboy.. nor an apple hater... just thought it kinda funny...)

The X300 uses a 2nd Generation SSD. I've handled the SONY & the X300. There is no flexing from the X300, the Sony's display and keyboard flexed enough that you have to be careful not to damage the unit.
X300 also offers customization, don't want the DVD Burner, swawp it out for a battery that extends life to 10 hours. Now, for screens.. x300 13" vs. 11.1"... bigger is a better here for me.
The X300 Keyboard is a million times better than the SONY. When you live and work 10+ hours.... it's these things that make the difference.
Cheers
wilcoholic @ Jun 19th 2008 10:28AM
I'm sorry but I'm using the TZ myself and the keyboard does not flex. The main unit is rock solid and build like a tank. No matter what you do with it it will not break. Its made from carbon fibre. And yes the only weakspot is the screen wich flexes and is pretty delicate but it makes up for that by being ultra thin. The screen itself is marvelous and its true 16:9 widescreen ratio not that pathetic 16:10 ratio most other laptops are using. So basicly its a comprise. A trade off. The 11.1 inch screen is either a pro or a con though.
And I didnt even use my trumpcard: expresscard slot. The X300 does not have an expresscard slot. You can pop in anything you want in there. You can even use that Asus XG station for some serious gaming. Can you do that with the X300? No because it doesnt have an express card slot. Basicly the TZ is a highly versatile machine that beats the X300 in almost every department.
Booger @ Jun 19th 2008 11:18AM
Wilcoholic, you want to get a bedroom for you and your TZ?
Nomi @ Jun 19th 2008 12:31PM
no way...i got a thanks! :D
Nomi @ Jun 19th 2008 12:34PM
yey!
Rick @ Jun 19th 2008 12:45PM
Has anyone with an X300 had a similar problem to that that seems to be happening to the X61s with the LED-backlight display? On the Lenovo forum a number of owners have had the display come apart or the LCD mysteriously crack.
Nooorm @ Jun 26th 2008 3:33PM
Haven't read anything about that on the X300, and I read on the lenovo blogs (http://lenovosocial.com/) that they identified the problem on the X61 screen and fixed it.
