I think the Dash's competition is the aftermarket GPS solutions (Garmin, TomTom) which we all know do not charge monthly subscriptions.
I know the Dash does provide much more value, but if I can make an analogy here, I believe sales of Tivo units went up drastically when they introduced a one-time lifetime use fee rather than a monthly subscription. I think a one-time fee is much more attractive to consumers. I'm sure someone more verse in marketing could explain why.
