I love reading Engadget, but as the head of a product management team that builds smartphones I can only say this - Ryan and the Engadget crew are bloggers, and their product is copy. Is there anyone on the crew that has defined and launched a consumer electronic product? If so, is there anyone who has done so in a leadership role? Unless someone here has been in a leadership role developing product, they can't have the perspective to make assertions like this. It's a nice theoretical argument that leaks can prod product development, but generally that argument holds no water. Leaks serve to feed the desire amongst gadget hounds for more, faster information - they *do not* serve the role of sharpening the feature set, and certainly won't get a good product out the door quicker than the organic pace. We run focus groups, usability studies, and get closed-door feedback from influencers - like Ryan - to sharpen and refine products.
