Onda VX777+ touchscreen PMP gets detailed, shown off on video

Onda's VX777 (or VX777+, as it's apparently now known) has been popping up here and there for a while now, but it looks like it's finally nearing an actual release, and MP4 Global has now provided a fairly thorough video overview of the device for the occasion. Unfortunately, it appears that this particular model doesn't boast the WiFi we had heard about previously, although it does somewhat surprisingly pack a capacitive touchscreen (3-inch, 400 x 240) instead of a more common resistive one. Otherwise, you can expect your choice of 2GB, 4GB or 8GB capacities, with a microSD card slot provided for further expansion, along with a TV-out, a built-in microphone, and support for just about every audio and video format you could want. Head on past the break for the video, and look for this one to start shipping next week with pre-order prices clocking in at $89, $99 and $109 for the 2GB, 4GB, and 8GB models, respectively.

89$ for a 2G touch screen player.. I dig it.
Josh L @ Jun 20th 2008 2:10PM
With TV out and all those formats...
I think I may just replace my P2 with this thing!
electron @ Jun 20th 2008 2:33PM
dont give up on the P2!!!!!! all someone needs to do is hack it to get TV out..... (I hope :)
TareX @ Jun 20th 2008 2:09PM
My sister who doesn't have and doesn't want a smartphone would love this. (her phone is too new to be replaced by an iPhone)
Richard Lai @ Jun 20th 2008 2:11PM
This is not a phone though.
Low Ranked @ Jun 20th 2008 2:16PM
Thanks! Now I know exactly what to get her for our anniversary coming up!
TareX @ Jun 20th 2008 2:19PM
@Richard
yeah that's the whole point. Instead of replacing a new phone with an iPhone, I could just get a touchscreen PMP for the songs/music videos/movies....etc
Richard Lai @ Jun 20th 2008 2:31PM
@TareX: well, how about the iPod Touch? The GUI is so much better, despite the lack of format support (there are plenty of format converters out though).
Richard Lai @ Jun 20th 2008 4:29PM
So I get low ranked for suggesting the iPod Touch. Why? Am I just stating the obvious? I just want answers.
corystal @ Jun 20th 2008 8:25PM
If her phone is too new to be replaced, it probably supports audio and video no?
Low Ranked @ Jun 20th 2008 2:18PM
Well, at least your name is dead accurate.
Danakin @ Jun 20th 2008 2:22PM
Wow, this thing seems great...and for a good price...I will likely be getting one! Can't wait!
Richard Lai @ Jun 20th 2008 2:32PM
@Low Ranked: the irony...
farfisa @ Jun 20th 2008 2:35PM
The product doesn't look bad and the price is pretty amazing.
Do you think you have to use the stylus? Do you think you have to use white gloves?
I like how the video has "Video Edit Magic - Trial Version Please Purchase" throughout. Gives it that pro feel.
Jun @ Jun 20th 2008 2:41PM
They used Jay Chou for the picture. Any Jay Chou fans here at Engadget?
slyer @ Jun 23rd 2008 2:59AM
yeah! I love his songs.
alexmueller @ Jun 20th 2008 2:53PM
I like how they used the video edit magic trial version to make this video. It says please purchase that's funny.
BrianB @ Jun 20th 2008 2:57PM
We have MP4 Global as top advertiser on our site:
http://www.pmptoday.com/2008/06/19/video-review-of-onda-vx777-and-side-by-side-comparison-with-vx767-vx757-vx747/
And it's funny how they have money for a topmost ad but no money for software.
ingus @ Jun 20th 2008 2:58PM
i just find it odd the review unit was in fact # 000001.
Either the reviewer is an 'insider' from Onda, or all of the units are labeled as 000001? anyone hazard a guess? :P
and @Jun, Jay Chou couldn't save the Moto ROKR E6, I doubt he'll fair any better here...
thedesolate1 @ Jun 20th 2008 3:05PM
and so the plot thickens...
James Cameron @ Jun 20th 2008 3:15PM
WTF? What kind of camera are they shooting this video with? Was this shot in widescreen and got squish down to 4:3ratio?
Charles @ Jun 20th 2008 3:17PM
Lol it's jay chou
Sanh @ Jun 20th 2008 3:20PM
Looks good. Rather get $109 8gb then $300 iphone 8gb

PMP=Pimp.
Jimmy Jones @ Jun 20th 2008 9:46PM
No actually PMP = Player In a Management Profession ............ which afterall means PIMP...... :-)
nicolas @ Jun 20th 2008 4:25PM
Don't capacitive touchscreens require bare skin?
Rotaryfan @ Jun 20th 2008 5:15PM
word yo.
I was thinking the same thing. It has to be an error. if someone really cares, go check the 767 to see if that is capacitive also. what is the browser function?
guig @ Jun 20th 2008 5:47PM
Yeah... 777..757..767..7747776777..Bingo. The dude's a tool. Nice deep on-camera voice. Shame to watch this video 'cause it looks like a nice player. Might have to waste some money on it. Can any Onda owners chime in and tell us their experiences
cf292007 @ Jun 20th 2008 8:01PM

I have both the 757 and the 767. Both nice players, video looks really good on both, supports tons of formats etc. Look out though, the music management isnt great on either players, and i guess its more of a video player than a music player. Ive had good experiences with MP4Global too.
emanuelle @ Jun 21st 2008 12:45AM
"Mario reviews a pmp" should be the headline bc thats what I thought when I saw the gloves. I guess that was a fake accent after all . What makes this cid funny is how he is a) using trial version software umm hellooo torrent and b)he kept messing up on the products 77.. ugh 74.... ugh 7 bajillion
Jon @ Jun 21st 2008 1:34AM
777 747 757 , what is this, the launching of a new Boeing airplane? Seriously. But the pricing is really great! I didnt know Mickey Mouse did Youtube reviews though. :)
Sanh @ Jun 24th 2008 2:36AM
Can you change the main interface? because it is freaken ugly, they even have the windows media player 9 icon.
Oleg Moskalensky @ Aug 21st 2008 12:37AM
Don't buy this product! Got it as a birthday gift, they didn't ship it when promised. The customer service sucks... eventually got it, had a number of flaws, misspellings, including number of resets, but it seemed to work... for about a month. Then a blank screen with some Chinese written message and that was it. Repeated attempts to mp4global resulted in nothing. True it's cheap, but you'll waste even that much if you buy it. It's a lousy outfit selling lousy products!
