Sure, you'll be able to pay out the nose for a Vista machine with a XP Professional "downgrade" soon enough, but Dell just pushed back its
cutoff for straight-up XP machines. They'll be selling select Inspiron and XPS desktop with whatever flavor of XP you choose up until June 26th, at precisely 6:59AM EST. Naturally after June 26 you'll be able to buy a Vista Biz or Ultimate machine and downgrade to XP Pro, but we'll hope it doesn't have to come to that. We heard that one guy even
got a printer to work with Vista. Things are looking up, folks!
[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]
i never thought that they could get 1 of them newfangled printer thingers to work on whats this called again
What happened to the Wii-Fit 30 day trial?
http://www.engadget.com/2008/05/09/wii-fit-the-30-day-test-starts-today/
That last remark wasnt needed... Paul is steve paying you for every remark like that?
Yes because that comment was all about Apple.
Well OpenSource coders don't have the money to pay for publicity.
"got a printer to work with Vista!"
I use printers with Vista all of the time. I take my laptop to school sometimes and i just connect to the network and if it is a new printer being connected to, it downloads the drivers and installs them automatically. I don't see what is wrong with it.
Well there's got to be something wrong with it if there is not only a demand for XP loaded new PCs, but that it has also become a selling point (e.g. the often referred to sign http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/microsoft/archives/130626.asp).
Although I will be making the switch to Apple soon, I do feel for the dozens of people who've worked so hard on getting Vista ready, yet it seems that their work has been so unpopular that it may become the shortest lived Windows version ever. That must be one hell of a blow to ones ego.
Drivers aren't much of an issue anymore, its just fun to make fun of the situation. The real problem with Vista is the higher cost of a baseline workstation for zero benefit in networking or security. I'm running Server2008 because its a good operating system. A robust upgrade from 2003. Vista on the other hand has ZERO features that I need in a business environment with higher initial cost and maintenance costs.
Sigh......................Apple fanboys. : )
people who can spell correctly seem to use windows however
people who can spell use windows however
Name one major business that doesn't use XP or Vista. Either that or name one business that only uses OSX. Good luck with that, and hopefully you can actually think instead of just being a fanboy.
@ ocean
about 90 percent of the world use's windows, i dont see what ur problem is with everything not made by apple

I do.
I 2nd that.
I 2nd that
Vista is more elegant than Leopard. imo
Vista is my preffered OS
Yeh True dat /b/rothers and /s/isters from other mothers!
Ive never had any problems with vista
I (insert current number here) that.
I've actually never had any problems with Vista, aside from requiring some new drives when I bought my TV Tuner. Although I'm not saying it doesn't have problems, I've just never experienced them.
ive never once had a problem with vista.
I use it at home and at work, been brilliant.
At home i run a small network with 1 vista computer and 2 XP computers (i cant afford to upgrade everything at once)
i also have a printer connected to a print server that is shared by all 3 and i had no problems getting it to work.
Its the stupidity of the users thats causing the problems, not vista itself.
That guy in the article was stupid enough to think that everything that worked in XP would work in vista; if he'd taken the 2 seconds it takes to download the vista drivers from the dell website, he would have been fine, but nooooooo, he instead stuffs it all up and then decides to blame vista for the problem
wow... are you guys threatened that a vendor is still selling XP? talk about insecure!
XP is useful for low spec machines and is a nice reliable OS.
However, this is 2008. Core 2 Duo/Quad is the norm with 2 to 4 Gb RAM so you're better with Vista on new machines.

*crickets chirping*
Well i do :D
Not because im some fucked up fanboy, just like it more :D
Then again, i don't mind windows, ubuntu and opensuse that much either :)
I like OS X 10.5. I'm not much of an Apple fanboy or anything, but the darn thing boots up a hell of a lot faster than Vista. Not to mention battery life or random blue screens when waking from sleep. But beyond that, Vista's great.
I CAN HAZ CHEEZEBURGER?
I like it better as well just because it works for me. I have tried Vista and although it's nice eye candy it isn't as seamless as it should be.
The iPod company makes computers now?
I would have to go with this one IMO, only because its the best OS out there. Just stop making Operating Systems Windows.
OK as same can go with Vista this letter I am about to type from your reply is going to make a 360º turn and hit you in the face
Ok here we go, The "F" -keys aka function keys can be disabled easily.
Vista on the other hand, all we need is bloatware. I mean come on my face here, its quite ridiculous in my opinion.
Apple I think has an eye one everything here, good hardware as number one, two, appearances making the outcome of the mac attractive instead a cheap looking plastic box with cheap parts that wont last the day after you bought it or to be generous a week. Three, I can go on about it but you get the idea, okay, "Speed", sense the 8 cores has been out by Apple, I haven't notice an 8 core to come out the day Apple released it. prove me wrong I mean I don't like to make false accusations here Derek. Lets not even go anywhere in the virus section because I don't want to get one. . . . . . wait I can't, thats right.
I am sure Apple has something up their sleeves to become once again a triumph to the consumers tasting. I am sure Windows 7 will be ooow awww with nifty features, but for what 15 minutes of fame? Lets get realistic here. Apple has the TV Tuner and all that you so called fake back there. But what can we benefit from it if we all get it for free anyways? Instead of taking $400 out of our wallets to get the best of the best which we only pay 100-120 for the best OS and there is only one not multiple operating systems to choose from that may or may not work for your computers requirements.
I am sure Apple has completed the Ram and multi-cores and has a wide range of employees like Microshit cough excuse me Microsoft employees. & what better way to express their new technology into one of those cool ads they do on tv with the white backgrounds and the two funny jokers lol jk but yeah I am for both sense I have both installed so far I only use Vista to play their latest games and Leopard for photography, graphic design, engineering, etc.... My only concern Is I wish Apple would go with the gaming a tad more then to wait longer after the pc versions come out.
Oh some say 2010 the internet will run dry or so they say 2010-2012 the world will end then any of this won't matter but yeah I don't see it happening as I am agnostic must see to believe.
My message to this Snow Leopard to conclude my lecture:
"In the next 90minutes, everything will be solved, by my penis - Family Guy" -
I'm working on a project at a company that has no plans to upgrade for atleast another year. But that company is a financial institute. They are extremely slow to upgrade by policy.
All of us developers at the company use our own machines and as such we all run Vista.
I'm going to make this plain and simple.
Paul Miller, you are a dick.
Thank you, have a nice day.
I wouldn't expect your comment to last very long.
You know, I have that same feeling. :-)

Engadget stop deleting positive comments on vista, it's lame.
ops, I didn't find a comment but it was there, my bad.
some of my comments on vista being okay have been deleted in the pasr quite alot in the past. I use vista and never had a problem in the past. I second the above comment.
better check the co-pays on wahmbulance service; they can add up
If M$ was doing their job, people wouldn't want to keep using XP.
If sites like Engadget didn't spread so much FUD people would be happy to buy Vista.
@Unknown: They still would want to use XP. Do you know why? PEOPLE. HATE. CHANGE. It's as simple as that.
I know of people that protested the transition from DOS to Windows 95 and then the transition from Windows 98 to XP.
I just ordered a Lenovo Thinkpad R61 with Vista and Vista will never boot on the system. Installing linux is my first order of business. That should take care of all of this bullcrap with Vista.
Went with a Vista one due to the wait on the Linux one, the wireless card had a 4 week lead time and I know I can get the one that comes with it to work. Now I just have to decide if I am going to stick with Gentoo or move to Debian.
Your comment made no sense.
You're basically never used Vista, but say it's bullcrap?
"Went with a Vista one due to the wait on the Linux one,"
One of what?
" the wireless card had a 4 week lead time and I know I can get the one that comes with it to work. Now I just have to decide if I am going to stick with Gentoo or move to Debian."
What the h3ll are you even talking about?
zargon: Just try Vista. Just one full day. I think you'll change your mind. :)
Sorry, it is a little confusing, typing on mobile devices isn't always the easiest.
To make it simpler for you to understand, Lenovo sells their Thinkpad laptops with linux, OpenSUSE to be exact. The R61, T61 and maybe X61 models that come with linux end up using a different wireless card. Currently, that wireless card has a 4 week lead time verses no lead time with the other wireless card they offer. I justed customized one that comes with Vista to meet my needs for about the same price.
As far as Vista goes, I have used it. In fact, I was one of the people in charge of checking out Vista for use in the company. I am in different with it, don't care one way or another. I really have no problems with it other than stand list, the resources it actually requires. We have currently decided not to go with Vista, it just is not worth it for us right now. We would have to change our current PC upgrade plan and it isn't something that management wants to do nor pay for yet. We may re-evaluate in a year or so, but I think we will be skipping Vista all together and look forward to Windows next release after SP1 comes out for it.
As far as the "bullcrap", I merely just meant the customer not getting an option anymore and being forced to choose Vista or soon, pay through the nose to have someone downgrade it for us.
Either way, my new laptop will never boot Vista because there simply is no reason too. Linux is getting installed because that is my OS of choice. As an added bonus though, linux will utilize the resources better, especially the 1 GB of ram.
