I've been a Microsoft user since the DOS days in the early 90"s. I started building my own systems in 1998 and have continued to do so until recently. I do everything on my systems from high def video cutting and compositing to php/web work, gaming and casual stuff. I work at a web company as a video guy. I recently bought a macbook and I couldn't be happier. I spent six months with Vista before going back to XP at work and now I'm running OSX. I can understand now why some people are Apple fan boys. I would consider myself one of them now. XP is an awesome OS, Vista really isn't. OSX is awesome as well. I can' say it's so much better then XP, but I can say that if you consider yourself a die hard computer users like I am, you're cutting yourself short not running a mac and getting the best of both worlds.
I received the Vista biz upgrade DVD from Dell quite a while back, but still haven't touched it!! All i'll say is that Microsoft made fundamental errors with that pile of cr*p OS that they call Vista.
Now i've bought myself a Macbook Pro (having always been a PC user), time to don OSX and Windows XP side by side in technicolour glory!
You're going to tell us what those fundamental errors are, aren't you? Mind you, that could be difficult since you haven't actually touched it.
Fail.
WY. Get a clue.

*facepalm*
XP is dead!
Stop whineing and move one!
Or stay with your beloved XP and get left behind. You won't be missed and we won't care.
I think stories like this are funny.
I've been using Vista Ultimate 64 for the last month, after being curious about how it would stack up to XP's performance in a professional 3d Graphics and Design environment.
Blew me away. EVERYTHING in my machine works better, even down to higher frame rates in games like Unreal 3, Crysis, etc.
Maybe it's only as good as the machine it's put on. Mine: Sager N9261.
Not going back to vista, even my legacy stuff like my scanner and wacom tablet work better.
(I've also totally abandoned my OSX machine at this point. 10.5 for the snooze!)
er, not going back to XP. Typos r phun.
I just ordered up an M4300 laptop from Dell with Vista Business. I'm going to use it as a test bed to see if we can migrate to Vista easily.
Also I use Vista at home and I like it. When I go to work XP seems so archaic now.
@hype22
Don't you want to pay the 500% markup on the ram, just so you can buy it through apple.com?
who here agrees that ocean(Clak) is an idiot
See here's the thing. I have a $500 professional HP scanner that will not work with Vista. It has a far superior TWAIN driver and utility than HP's new crappy bloated garbage software. The build quality is far superior to new scanners and it is very reliable. I don't use it everday anymore but it is still the best way to import drawings to use in 3D software.
Should I keep my great scanner and XP or spend a whole lot of money on a new lesser quality scanner and Vista. The old software will never work and a woraround really won't be the best solution. Vista adds absolutely nothing to my work experience and slows down my computer. Yes I can install more ram, but with the additional cost I do not gain any extra productivity. Also Vista's horrible folder structure and user prompts cause huge delays in getting anything to work right. Sure you can almost turn them off and revert the folder structure and start menu. Only then Vista resembles XP and doesn't actually function better than XP.
What is the point of upgrading to a new OS if it does not give you any productive gains. A fully supported XP64 with DX10 would be the best OS out there. Windows 7 should just be that. Then Microsoft would have an excellent OS that people would actually like. We may also get true 64 bit applications, boy wouldn't that be nice after 10 years of promise.
Sure you might not have problems with Vista on a new computer, yes it does look pretty. That still doesn't make it a good OS. All things considered, and truthfully observed, Vista is total complete garbage. There is truly no point for Vista to exist. It brings nothing to the table, causes more problems than it is worth with old hardware, and is stupidly expensive for the good versions.
I use windows everyday and I can't stand Macs. Talk about an OS with a clueless design. The Mac GUI is horrible from a usability standpoint. For all intensive purposes the core GUI functions haven't changed since the IIe and using a Mac makes me want to run headfirst into a brick wall. SO many people defend the OS because of its cult art status, but it was the worst OS to actually do design work on past 1996. Microsoft did get it right with Windows 98. The OS was streamlined, and the GUI was simple enough to not get in the way. From there on out the OS started to get in the way of productivity. XP was able to overcome its faults and eventually offered far more than Win 98 ever would. I doubt Vista will ever offer more than XP before Windows 7 sees the light of day.
