Shenzhen EM-2811 "Latte ICE" is actually kind of neat
These days, it's pretty wild and crazy if a PMP manufacturer manages to do anything different than what's already out there, so we've got a soft spot for Shenzhen's EM-2811, being sold as the "Latte ICE." Sure, nothing spectacular, and the 1GB-4GB capacity is seriously amature hour, but we like the look of the device, and the interface is pretty strong for a no-name DAP. There's a miniSD slot to overcome that capacity handicap, a 2.8-inch QVGA screen, FM radio, voice support, AVI / MPEG video playback, and a built-in speaker. Tetris is included, but with the button layout we're hoping they can finagle a couple emulators on there. Battery life of 4 hours video and 8 hours audio is painful, but overall the Latte ICE isn't at all bad for a $70 starting price. Video is after the break.

I hate slow news days.
A pmp that isn't:
a) made by apple
b) considered unbearably dull by engadget
Will wonders never cease... ;-)
"...the 1GB-4GB capacity is seriously amature [sic] hour..."

is 'amature' the equivalent of lacking maturity, or immature? or does it mean something else?
Er, I'm guessing it just means it sees itself as more of a hobby, and doesn't actually make money doing what it does.
And, of course, the Espresso will serve as its 1.8" sibling...
...sorry, couldn't resist.
Reminds me of the bottom half of Nintendo DS for some reason. Except this is metallic.
NICE
Playstation XMB FTW!
That's A-M-A-T-E-U-R.
Spell check, anyone. . . anyone?
Amature
Amateur
Tomato
Tomatoe
English, Imperial English. Now you know.
@slayer[sic] wrong. there is no word amature in the queen's or the president's english.
They all should come with FM, but can't some come with AM? They don't broadcast games on AM and sometimes you might even want to listen to the news or something. How much more would it cost to just drop in an AM radio on some of these that already have FM?
Hey guys! This just in: (Ooh, I'm in a cheaky mood today!), my Nokia N95 8G (Black*) does all of this and more - GPS, MP3, FM Radio, multi-tasking etc. Oh, and some cool games, one handed operation and a auto-rotating display are sweet too. And here's the killer, oh denizens of the digisphere, thanks to a bult in radio tranciever you can slide out a numbered keypad and actually call your friends, family and others - and download content from anywhere. Isn't that special? PMP, puleaze! Why?
*Is the new silver
Because some people don't want or need an expensive phone. Some people don't need a mobile. Some people already have a phone and just want one of these.
This just in: No outrageous monthy fees or contracts for stand alone PMP's!
Fail
This one starts at $70. How much did your Nokia cost?
we're all SO happy for you, we really are. Its great when you love your phone (Black*) but you can probably just keep it to yourself...
Jeez what kind of crap is engaget reduced to review now?
Amanure?
Once again the lightening rod that is irony strikes again as our good friend KilgoreTrout attempts to berate Engadget for its poor spelling while he (or she) is unable to construct a proper sentence.
I think what you were trying to say was, "Jeez what kind of crap is engadget reduced to review[ing] now?"
In the meantime, we'll all ignore the relative nonexistence of the word "jeez," as well a the failure to capitalize "Engadget."
That said, I realize comments are not necessarily held to the same journalistic standard as a fairly large publication as Engadget is; but religious though I am not, there is certainly some merit to "let he who hath not sinned cast the first stone."
...And for those sharp-eyed readers, note my malfunctioning letter "s".
Really, it sticks.
Sorry, I've seen the shiz that passes for electronica in Shenzhen, China.... It's a guaranteed piece-o-crap to be sure. Shenzhen's all about shoddy imitations. Has anyone seen the device in the 'wild' yet?
This has been available for awhile from a California company. Click the link.
why do you keep talking!?
lol, as you can *see*, the Latte's earphones are very comfortable and fit very well in your ear.
Go play in the sandbox!
I see you believe the "third time's the charm" theory, considering both of your comments were posted three times (though the first one with slightly different wording each time). I got news for ya. You're wrong.
Woops, added a fourth, did you? Still wrong.
Nice, reminds me of my excellent Monolith 2 back in the day.
Rename it iICE, bump up the price to $125 and I'm sold ;>)
@ Wonderkind
beside being kind of obnoxious I belive you're a lier too.
You see I've got an N95 8gb (too?) , and it´s black because that's the only colour it is made in. and the auto rotating screen is one feature it does not have, if you want it in horizontal mode you've got to slide out the multimedia keys.
It makes me think you never handled an n95 at all because the old model (I had that one before) works in the same way.
How little you know.
Dude, I'm not a liar, and I design gadgets and software. My Nokia N95 8G has the latest software and it auto rotates the screen - great for viewing photos etc. But a pain generally as it does it when in your pocket so you have to turn it the other way to view in portrait mode. (But no different from the iPhone in that respect.) New software is excellent. Speeds things up and makes Nokia Maps more reliable. wazzupalex AT gmail DOT COM
*liar
@John Cavanagh: It costs me nothing, on contract. I'll end up paying about £400 which is the price it costs cash today unlocked. I'm on a £35 a month deal. 600 minutes, unlimited texts, 500MB data, stop the clock. Oh, and I pay £6 a month for Nokia maps, but I can stop that anytime. My whole post was a tease - I was poking fun!
Sony lawyers start your engines
You would be better if you were made by Apple, too, but YOU'RE NOT. So, you should now go home and question your whole existence.
Hey Wonderkid! This just in: I also happen to have a gadget, named Sony Ericsson K300i, that is able to call my friends and family and talk to them. It is able to do other things too, like not require a battery recharge every 2 days (I recharge it every Sunday), not die from the first 2 drop of rain (i actually dropped it into a glass of water, and made it through a couple of rainstorms with it in my pocket), and survive a 5-meter fall to solid pavement. Oh and it cost me €40. Two years ago. And if I'll ever want to watch movies or listen to radio while I'm on the road, I'll just buy one of these nifty PMP's for €100ish. The phrase "bang for the buck" rings a bell for ya?
Where's the fugly comment? Every other device that looks like this you dub so.
hardware buttons != fugly
Interface looks too much like XMB.
The buttons could be prettier...
This one is called Ramous RM750 in china market, cost almost 350 china yuan that is 50 USD.
