Twilight Hack returns to knock out Wii Menu 3.3
Nintendo talks a big talk, but has never invested heavily in actually protecting its systems from those nefarious homebrew junkies. While the Wii Menu 3.3 did slightly break the Twilight Hack, it didn't even bust up folks who already had the homebrew channel installed, and its protections against further hacks were minimal. Now the HackMii folks are back with Twilight Hack v0.1beta1, which bests Wii Menu 3.3, along with some other improvements for homebrew usage. We can't tell if this is incompetence or benevolence on Nintendo's part, or perhaps these hackers are just that good, but either way we're lovin' it JT-style.

I hope you mean Justin Timberlake, not Jack Thompson.
Maybe he means Jammin Time. Cause that's what I think of when I see JT.
Actually, i think its James Taylor
Sweet Baby James FTW
"We can't tell if this is incompetence or benevolence on Nintendo's part"
Really, you can't? Only Apple or Nintendo would ever get a line like that. Any other company would be some evil and undoubtedly incompetent.
I prefer to look at it like Nintendo just doesn't give half a crap. Why spend thousands of dollars having your coders make the system hack-proof when its pretty much inevitable?
Only reason the PS3 hasn't been hacked is BD-R burners are still cost prohibitive.
That's is the ability of PS3. Burning PS3 BD are cost-probitive, laptop drives are too small/expensive to be efficient to hold the 50GB disks, and noone can use MemoryStick for that either...
Is it just me, or are the anti-Apple fanboys starting to get more annoying than the Apple fanboys?
It's just the fanboys in general that are annoying.
Nintendo has no experience in the security side of consoles. All the previous consoles were inflexible toys. The Wii is the first true general purpose, exploitable hardware which is suitable for homebrew. Hence it WILL be hacked to death.
They WILL have to learn the hardway like MS with the XBox, and Sony with the PS2 and PSP.
@ Kurian,
So the DS is what? Unhackable? Your so wrong...
Anyone ever consider that they really don't care?
Doesn't have to be incompetence when you already bought the system and paid them money.
Ba da ba ba ba, my friends. Ba da ba ba ba indeed.
I have to say I cannot stand ad jingles. Especially ones that are mindlessly regurgitated like "I'm lovin' it." I'm looking at you, Paul.
Dear god, I hate that phrase and McDonald's stupid jingle with the burning fire of a thousand suns.
You know, that comment you made right there...
Im lovin it
take a chill pill if you don't have one take a chill strip, just put it on your tongue and chillll.
I'd love to see that stupid McDonalds clown brutally murdered by Jason Vorhees.
lol RVB
They gotta be good. A whole industry is counting on these guys doing their job.
You're late... ArsTechnica had this yesterday, already on Digg's front page.....

Because we all check ArsTechnica and Digg every day.
Sora267: More or less.
Amm who says Engadget were trying to be first? who gives a monkey's weither the news breaks here first or not??
Is there a way to play Wii backups without the use of a modchip? You know, in case my original game gets scratched up...............
nope
Does anyone actually play 'homebrew' games with these mod chips? Really?
You know 95% of people using hacks are just using it to play 'backups' but nobody wants to come out and say it. :)
Er, but this doesn't involve any modchips at all. No way to load backups with this. Try reading up on the Twilight Hack.
i haven't touch my wii for so long that i think i am still on OS 1.8
wii-lly?
The Nintendo execs are probably like "Stop the twilight hack". Engineers, okay we'll write something. But the engineers probably know eventually, someone will hack it again so they don't try very hard at stop the hack. They'll "fix" it temporarily to please the guys up top.
