Palm launches unlocked Centro, gets Google Maps "My Location"
We've seen the Centro in its Sprint, AT&T, and Verizon (to name a few) iterations, but global roamers and free agents of all sorts will be delighted to know that Palm's increasingly popular little smartphone is now available in a delicious unlocked GSM flavor. The device sports all the same specs as AT&T's model, but clocks in with a $299 price tag and plain gray numberpad instead of the telco version's shocking lime green variation. Alongside the carrier-free phone, Centros will also be nabbing a version of Google Maps with its "My Location" feature (long absent from GMaps on Palm phones). Current AT&T and Verizon customers as well as new unlocked owners will be able to download the app tomorrow, with a software update for Sprint later this Summer. Finally, you'll all know where you are.

Funny, the cost for an agent at at&t is $294. Thanks at&t for giving dealers your best deal!
/End sarcasm
I will take with this wifi, bluetooth, 3G, and runs palm os we have a deal
but still no copy, past, A2DP, Memory upgrade card etc. hmmm. I'll keep my Centro thank you very much!
Faslane
And i DO have an iPhone in my drawer.
just for the centro? please palm, unlock the GPS on the treos.
GSM, not GPS
somebody please tell me where i can buy that shell.
i hate the black one on mine. its sparkly and i hate it.
The phone looks so much better with those gray buttons compared to the green ones the AT&T one has. This is my new favorite Centro, too bad it's GSM only.
Well, since Steve 'job' has nothing to do with this phone, one would assume he would be fairly indifferent.
Additionally, I don't think that there is any reason for you to call
attention that you 'are back', I would presume the entire readership
of this site won't give two f**ks.
:D
I give one fuck, but certainly not two.
So you've got O-Face Francesca, and douche bag Mario...you've got some great friends there Palm!
I have been a Treo user for quite some time. When my 650 finally puked and Verizon started carrying the Centro, I decided to give it a try. The keyboard isn't nearly as much of an issue as I thought it would be but this thing is SMALL!
My only real complaint so far is the battery life...If I don't charge it every night it dies pretty quickly.
Can't wait for this app...Wish it would let you send your location to your friends as well!
So does this mean that my Nokia 6555 At&t will get the My location with Google Maps!!! If so SWEET , I've been waiting for that feature for a long time!
Interesting. Palm still needs to step it up though. Their newer hardware is half decent looking. May be if they load Android on it they can get back into the lead as a top smart-phone provider.
Ugliest phone of the year.
One of the best phones out there, great value for the $$ and it does everything in a small form factor.
Yes Fusion we already know you are ugly.
Remember when the Palm OS looked new and high tech? Poor palm...
Why poor palm?
They are selling these phones like crazy and their stocks are rising.
Dated OS or not they are doing quite well.
What a bunch of morons we have here.
If you don't like the phone or Palm for that matter simply don't waste your time posting here saying "fugly phone". That adds nothing to this post just waste yours and other people's time.
grow up.
What idiot would put Francesca on hold for Mario?
Who are franchesca and Mario???
haha that was a good laugh, for real though Francesca looks wild!
Any chick that would let you use that kind of picture as her caller id photo HAS to be wild. Too bad the photo doesnt show what time the call is taking place. Im sure its a 2 am kinda call.
she kinda looks like a man, man. plus there's that telltale (M) next to his name.
That 'telltale M' stands for mobile... as in shes calling on her Mobile phone. You tellin me the W next to Mario stands for Woman? If so - all our phones have a gender assignment issue.
twas a joke. but she does look a bit like Dennis Rodman i think.
"a software update for Sprint later this summer"
What the hell? We've had this phone since November and are still waiting for My Location. Awesome Sprint, just awesome. I'd switch if I wasn't paying $30 a month.
Yeah, all of our complaints about apps...I kinda just want to tell myself to shut up, and just laugh at all the suckers on AT&T paying through the roof for data.
Wait...So Palm is selling this for $299 while a post a while ago said Rogers is selling the Centro in Canada locked and on a 3 year plan...also for $299?
If the information was correct...Screw you Rogers...
Yup...$300 for new users on a 3-year plan. Rumours (spelled with a 'u' because we're talking Canada) suggest it'll be $200 with an upgrade, but I'm not eligible for an upgrade so I don't know about that yet. Month-to-month or without contract it'll be $400, on a two-year contract it'll be $350, and on a one-year contract, it'll be the same as no-contract at $400. This is from the Rogers.com website which:
a) ends in .com (a true sign of their Canadian patriotism) and,
b) is so poorly built that you can't copy and paste links to most pages, so you'll have to navigate to it yourself (under wireless products, all-in-one devices).
Since Centro users can now obtain "My Location", it's theoretically possible they can realize just how lost they are. *sigh* One can only hope!
This little thing blows my iPhone out of the water in the way of features, A2DP, MicroSD, smaller, plays music and movies etc like the iPhone, better battery life, actual keyboard, replace-able battery etc. etc. I don't even use my iPhone anymore. It's sexier, yes, but the lack of features and user-swap-able batteries and memory upgrades etc. are just not for me, and I like to stream music over BT, and iPhone won't do it!
Faslane
you get A2DP on yours? the iphones battery must be horrendous because the centro's is pretty bad.
the iphone wins though because it has a 3.5mm headphone jack... cmon palm. my phone was a great value, but considering theres no mic input on your 2.5mm jack, why wouldn't you just give me the 3.5mm one??
Why not swap Palm's OS for the new Android OS,It ll look great on this !!!
Palm newest models for this year 800 and 850 run Windows Mobile not palm os.
Why would they risk it with Android when Windows mobile is doing great.
I'd disagree that the version with green buttons is "shocking". I like it more. If anything is at fault looks-wise it's the big plastic painted silver buttons on all models. Ultimate tacky.
But good on 'em anyway. Unlocked phones are the way to go.
what is this, a fucking failure competition today?
If the price fits........
Solace yourself in knowing that Fusion speaks English with childlike precision...
