Apple's iPhone 3G to go on sale at 8:00AM on July 11th?
Don't take a vacation day just yet or anything, but early word has it that Apple's iPhone 3G will actually go on sale at 8:00AM (local time, most likely) on July 11th. If you'll recall (how could you forget, right?), the original iPhone didn't go on sale until 6:00PM on launch day, but considering that the whole checkout process will likely be a fair bit more involved this go 'round, we'd say it's a smart move to get the line rolling early.

Why do I foresee all the Engadget editors standing in a line together there holding hands?
Darren @ Jun 24th 2008 3:21PM
Considering this one just bought a Samsung Instinct, you can count me out.

I would like to quote Homer Simpson: You´re all idiots... :)
kccboy2004 @ Jun 24th 2008 4:24PM
I have seen a lot of people called "idiots" on Engadget. But this girl, "Jinbei" really is one.
She is promoting a phrase called "me to". I think that her English is not good.
It is fairly clear that these Apple promoting comments come from the face of Evil. I am coming more and more to the conclusion that these maniacal Apple promoters are the bad guys, agents of Evil.
We must continue to right their wrongs.
I really don't like Multi-touch. Ever since the HTC came out with this and even after Apple copied HTC, I can't get over the fact that a Jog dial is better. Everyone who I have spoken to says the same thing... it is just too difficult and fiddly to use.
Jinbei, we know that you work for Satan. You will not win. The forces of good will prevail.
Nate the Prophet @ Jun 24th 2008 4:29PM
Can Engadget PLEASE report as soon as AT&T officially states what the iPhone3G pricing policy will be for current AT&T (non-iPhone) customers? I've been waiting for an iPhone for 3 years (literally(, but am a little nervous lately with some rumors that current customers will get royally screwed.
Thanks!
josereyes0 @ Jun 24th 2008 4:39PM
Let me know when you get rid of your Instinct for an iPhone.
Vidit Bhargava @ Jun 24th 2008 4:39PM
i bet people are going to line up starting july 4th
phanbouy @ Jun 24th 2008 5:02PM
NERRRRD RRRRRAGE-AH!
Jubei @ Jun 24th 2008 5:15PM
I predict a huge line of people buying the new iPhone 3G with multi-touch nearly everywhere. Clearly there were no huge lines or massive number of buyers for the "extinct" with the "me to" ooops, thank you for the correction "me too" design. The worldwide sale of the iPhone on July 11th with be a huge success and the news will resonate throughout the media circles.
Mark Anderson @ Jun 24th 2008 5:51PM
Please tell me that Jubei's a comedy troll. I mean, seriously: no-one can be that stupid.
Please?
Anyway, the gist of this seems to be: Shock horror! Stores open at pretty much their normal times to sell new iPhone!
And this is news?
Garst @ Jun 24th 2008 11:51PM
As I mentioned on Twitter last night: I no longer listen to any comments that say product X sucks, but product Y is AWESOME! I've never been burned by such comments, but I have come to realize that those comments have absolutely no merit. Those people have never bought any product other than the one they're trying to bamboozle you into buying. I first noticed this when looking for a bluetooth headset, but it goes especially for the Apple fanasses that don't even hear about a product before declaring the Apple equivalent superior.

In store activation - bring a tent.
rock99rock @ Jun 24th 2008 3:17PM
Most of us already have one built-in.
Idlemind @ Jun 24th 2008 3:24PM
I'm sure some editors already pitched one...
(one way or another)
iEye @ Jun 24th 2008 7:36PM
You people make me sick!
Oooh look at me! I'm an F'in nerd with an iPhone 3G on the first day!
And now I am going to go home and make a crappy YouTube unboxing while someone is doing my wife!....
Excuse me while I Vomite with RAge,,,
rock99rock @ Jun 24th 2008 3:16PM
Do we still not know about upgrade prices for (formerly premier) business customers? What about the corporate discount on service?
John @ Jun 24th 2008 3:16PM
I've decided to stick with my EDGE iPhone. I was originally captured by the RDF, but then I realized that the 2.0 update is all I really want, and I get that for free. 3G isn't really that important and I already have a GPS.
Jamma @ Jun 24th 2008 3:17PM
If it's 8am PST, then it's 4pm BST, but midnight in tokyo.
But, like you said, if you mean 8am everywhere, then people in LA will be getting there iPhones 8 hours before us Brits
Helmore @ Jun 24th 2008 3:24PM
It's the other way around, the Brits will get theirs 8 hours before those in LA will.
Lori Swanstrom @ Jun 24th 2008 3:44PM
We're also not in PST right now. It is PDT, smartiepants.
phanbouy @ Jun 24th 2008 3:45PM
Lori, are you trying to say there's a party in your pants and we're all invited?

But I have been told by two o2 employees (One of which confirmed with her manager) in two cities, that the UK launch is 7.02 AM.
dazj @ Jun 24th 2008 6:01PM
7.02 am would suit me, can pick one up before a nice loooong drive to Cornwall.. at least I'll have something new and shiny to play with to pass the boredom of the weekend down there
Wolfticket @ Jun 24th 2008 3:21PM
Wait, it's not on sale already?
I thought Apple liked to have things ready to sell when announced.
I guess the fact that I though it was on sale already shows how little I care.
Zorque @ Jun 24th 2008 5:29PM
You care so little that you had to comment about it.
nxtiak @ Jun 24th 2008 3:22PM
It would be STUPID for them to start selling at 6pm or whenever UPS delivers them that day because of the required in-store activations.
haX0r @ Jun 24th 2008 3:23PM
Hey why are all those people standing in line daddy?
Those are iPhone fanboys/girls.
Das Boot @ Jun 24th 2008 3:35PM
no those are just retards.....
Steve Jones @ Jun 24th 2008 5:01PM
Not iTards?
El Cartel @ Jun 24th 2008 4:59PM
Can someone enlighten me and tell me what the difference btw this an the old one is. Besides 3G which it should of had and AGPS and now the 10 extra on your data and the fact that I would have to resign my contract. . . I think I listed all the differences.
rndmnme @ Jun 24th 2008 3:27PM
Steve Jobs told you to do it.
Tim @ Jun 24th 2008 3:44PM
1. 3G
2. Shiny
p3t3b2 @ Jun 24th 2008 3:48PM
You're correct, 3G -(limited) and GPS -(not full and no software to run it) are the only differences. Other then that, the hardware is exactly the same. Put the new 2.0 on the old iphone and you basically have the same device.
Dale @ Jun 24th 2008 5:19PM
Should *have* had, not *of*, *have*. English, people, do any of you speak it?!
I will hopefully be getting one on the day of release. Despite favouring Macs at home, I am generally pretty open-minded with mobile phones. I have owned devices made by Nokia, Sony-Ericsson, HTC, iMate and Motorola, and used devices by Samsung. I've had issues with all of them.
Having spent the best part of the last year using Windows Mobile, with all the hassle that entails, I am ready to move on. The iPhone is the only phone I've used so far that addresses my usability needs by design, rather than by sheer luck or risky third party extensions.
Scotjo @ Jun 24th 2008 3:25PM
I've got a dentist appointment that morning. Can somebody pick one up for me?
rndmnme @ Jun 24th 2008 3:27PM
Yeah sure. What's youre credit card number?
morcheeba @ Jun 24th 2008 5:04PM
I'll do your dental work for you while you stand in line...
Matt @ Jun 24th 2008 10:49PM
You bring up a point: since you have to activate, you can't have other people get one for you. That goes for the people who were supposedly paying poor people to wait in line for them when the iPhone launched.
Neal @ Jun 24th 2008 3:27PM
At least when the system becomes hopelessly swamped with activations and the immenent crash happens, people won't have to rush to the internet to complain - they can just start an in-store riot.
Guillermo @ Jun 24th 2008 5:20PM
Sounds like fun. I'm in.
TJ @ Jun 24th 2008 3:32PM
Does anyone know if Apple we doing activations from within the Apple Store? I really don't want to stand in a line to buy the phone and then have to stand in line at an AT&T store. It would be nice to just buy it at an Apple store....pop my old SIM card out...and put it in the new iPhone. They could probably just activate the new data plan via phone. (Customer Service)
TJ
Neal @ Jun 24th 2008 3:36PM
In both stores - they won't let you leave without activation, so they can't very well sell to you in the Apple store, and let you leave to hit AT&T :)
adam moss @ Jun 24th 2008 3:37PM
I was at the Apple store yesterday and they told me 6pm.
Gingerbread Man @ Jun 24th 2008 3:41PM
All I want to know is how many phones each store is getting. So that way if its like 100, then ill go a couple hours early and get one. But if theres only 25 or something then Ill wait till more come in on another day.
I dont know how people can sit there for things like the iPhone, Xbox 360's and PS3's days in advance. Like it's a normal thing to be sitting outside a store with a cooler, tent, and mini grill for days!!! Especially now that its summer all these lil bastards off school will be in line fa sho......Im gettin that fa sho!
Dubb @ Jun 24th 2008 5:10PM
Fa sho?
Carlos @ Jun 24th 2008 6:12PM
as easy as this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B_P2PRPyxHA
phanbouy @ Jun 24th 2008 3:42PM
just a warning to everyone: if you're getting a corporate discount with ATT now, and you go back to this original plan if you were to ditch the iPhone, they'll give you the run around about getting your discount back. damn... 18months till i can switch carriers
LiqwidZero @ Jun 24th 2008 3:44PM
Why buy the phone on launch?
Wait until about a week or two after launch and get one then. There's a bigger chance that you can get one then and not be in one of these colossal crowds.
