DeLorme Earthmate PN-40 GPS unit for those of you who go outside
We don't normally get very excited about things that involve scary things like nature, bugs, and sunlight. In this case, though, DeLorme's Earthmate PN-40 GPS device sports some seriously interesting features that we couldn't pass up. It uses a high-sensitivity 32-channel Cartesio chipset that speeds up signal acquisition, a dual-core processor for insane redraw speeds, 3-axis compass with accelerometer to allow use in any position, 500MB of internal Flash memory, and supports SDHC cards. Phew. So there you have it, one of the most intense GPS units of doom you can possibly get. Good luck out there, nature people!

For what?
Eric @ Jun 25th 2008 11:27PM
BT would be nice if you have your laptop with you and want a bigger screen (or to use google maps).
El Taco @ Jun 25th 2008 11:27PM
Pfft! Nobody goes outside anymore! It's way overrated.

Speaking of Doom.....

Pretty cool... for a GPS
Josh @ Jun 26th 2008 12:20AM

Iphone: Overrated Piece of shit... i mean Phone, sorry, keys are right next to each other -_-.
Let me know how your pretty little iPhone handles getting dropped in mud.

Why would you want an iPhone. You could just pick a turd out of the toilet instead.
But this GPS would be great for geocaching.

When your iPhone runs out of juice after a few hours, trying changing the batteries with a pair of double As. Oh, that's right, you'll have to send it into the factory when the proprietary battery no longer holds a charge.

Anyone know the price?

Nice GPSr, great for Geocaching but I still use my PocketPC. It has BT so I can put my BT GPS sensor on my hat and always have good signal. Ever put a GPSr like this in your pocket so you can record data only to find you've lost signal while it was in your pocket. Dang, I hate when that happens. Then you have to wait for a signal to be reacquired. This takes too long and messes up my timing while conducting point counts for the USGS and Audubon. My PocketPC with USGS Topo maps on it is perfect as well because I can record my data into excel on the unit on the official forms needed for the survey at hand. Not only that but I can play recordings of bird songs as well to verify species identification or as part of the survey depending on the protocol. Oh yeah, it has SD and CF slots on it so I've got tons of storage for maps and forms and recordings. Been doing this since 2004 with a 4" screen and at 625 megahertz. Too cool! Not to mention the driving navigation features of Pharos and Co-Pilot.

Good job, DeLorme. They continue to be the most responsive GPSr manufacturer on the market. Magellan went to crap after being bought by Thales and there hasn't been any improvement under Shah. The Triton was and still is ridiculously buggy. Garmin still has good customer support, but is no longer innovative and is just living off their name. DeLorme's engineers participate in user forums and have listened to the criticisms about the PN-20. The dual processor should speed up route calculation and screen redraws, which were a big criticism. Good job picking a 3-axis compass as well. Garmin for whatever reason sticks with 2-axis. Magellan uses 3-axis, but you can't trust Magellan anymore. Let's hope this DeLorme has good geocaching capabilities

Ultimate GPS? Pfft. It doesn't even have WAAS!
Earl Jr. @ Jun 27th 2008 12:13AM
I stand corrected.
ocoloxin @ Jun 28th 2008 12:24PM
I don't understand the lame comments comparing everything to the iPhone. This doesn't appear to have phone capabilities (most wilderness areas don't have cell coverage anyway). They serve very different purposes. I think some of you have serious insecurities over the iphone. (I'm still using a treo 650 with bluetooth tomtom for GPS!)

A bunch of idiots on this site trying to bring down the iphone. A TOTAL bunch of idiots.
bob @ Oct 31st 2008 3:23PM
all gps devices lose signal if u put it in your pocket.....idiot

I have had my Delorme Earthmate PN-40 for a couple of days now. Whatever they have said about how difficult the software is, it's true time 10. I am a geocacher and purchased the PN-40 in hopes of getting a serious tool. I can't load my 21 pocket queries. Adding one geocache at a time using the web plugin sucks. The firmware upgrade helped, but I'd buy a GPS 60CSx. My Earthmate PN-40 is back in its box ready to be returned to the store. It's not a serious tool for a serious geocacher.
