World's first iPhone 3G on sale in New Zealand a day before the US
Consider yourself an Apple fanatic? Gotta have the latest and greatest the moment it's available? Ok... prove it. We have it from a trusted source that the world's first iPhone 3G will be on sale at 00:01, Friday July 11th, in New Zealand -- that's still Thursday, July 10th at 5:01 in the AM in Cupertino or 13:01 hours in London. At that precise minute, Vodafone NZ will swing open the doors of its Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch shops to your overeager HSDPA jones. So, now that you know, the next move is all yours. I will actually be in New Zealand from July 6th to beginning of December.
Any Buyers? haha
What!? We where here first! jk
Hopefully the guy who runs the fruit stand from Flight of the Conchords isn't there selling the iPhones 3G, because he won't sell and Apple to a Kiwi.
Voted up.
That's why they didn't sell us the first iphone, they thought we were australian.
YUSS i live in new zealand :D
does any body reckon it will work on Telecom NZ and Vodafone NZ?? By changing the sim card?
Since Telecom NZ's HSPA 3GSM network isn't up and running, ths answer right away would be no. However once Telescum switches over to a sim base,I'm sure it will be possible.
I'm a tad concerned about the fact that the G3 on the iPhone is only tri-band. There's no 900MHz G3 reception. Currently Vodafone NZ doesn't have any 900MHz G3 towers, but once they start moving G3 into the countryside you'd expect them to use the 900MHz frequency as that's what they currently use for 2G GSM transmission in rural areas.
Telecom is building their 2G GSM network at 850Mhz. So you'd expect them to build their rural 3G services at that rate when they get to that point.
It's all probably academic, as the incoming batch of iPhones will probably have fallen apart by the time any of this is relevant.
OMG I have compelling news!
Hawaii will be the last major place on the earth to get the Iphone 3G
sucks being in Hawaii for the Iphone launch!
Funny thread, what a laugh! Go NZ!
This comment thread says a lot more about Engadget commenters than about anything else.
People of the world let it be known that Vodafone NZ have totally screwed up this launch. Barely over a week to go and still no sign of prices. Way to go Vodafone.
But the best bit was on the morning of the WWDC when Vodafone staff knew (way) less than the fans did.
I wonder if they'll drop the prices of iPods, and the iPod Touch coz buying the touch would actually be more expensive than the iPhone...
Wait, do we have to sign a contract with Vodafone for iPhone in NZ?
You bet we will.
Vodafone has had fun over-charging us in the past with everything, i mean, telecom are still yet to release their new SIM network. So you can definitely see whats going to happen.
A standard 2 year contract. and a POSSIBLE but not probable prepaid phone.

Vodafone has announced its local pricing for the iPhone 3G.
The 8GB iPhone will be available for on-account customers with a 1GB monthly data cap for NZ$199 on a two-year contract. The 16GB phone costs $349 on the same plan. The cost per month of the plan is $250.
On the lowest data plan, 250MB per month, the up-front cost of the 8GB iPhone is $549, while the 16GB costs $699. The cost per month of the plan is $80.
An intermediate plan, 500MB per month, will see the 8GB model available for $449 and the 16GB model at $599. The cost per month of the plan is $130.
Vodafone's local website appears to have succumbed to traffic and has been down for around an hour. International media is covering the local iPhone action intensely as we are the first to see the launch of the new 3G model of the iPhone.
The phone is officially launched here at 12.01 Friday morning.
