MyVu Crystal a worthy travel companion, available now
Surely you remember Veronica Belmont posing with the MyVu Crystal / Shades at CES earlier this year? Yeah, the former unit is finally available to order for the three people in attendance who care, and better still, a recent review by PC World asserts that this thing actually isn't a half bad travel companion. Imagery was said to be "crystal-clear" (har) and battery life was more than reasonable, but look, even the reviewer admitted that he "wouldn't be caught walking down the street" with 'em on. Purchase accordingly.

i think these would come in handy if you had a realy bad cold, and were in bed for a couple of days bored out of your mind.

Then again, having bright video burnt into your retinas from such a short distance would probably give you the world's worst migraine and make you vomit really hard.

Im beginning to think engadget is being paid by Apple to give shoddy reviews to every pocket-display product that comes out...until Apple released their own. Why would anyone walk down the street wearing these unless they wanted to get hit by a car or trip over a kid?
iHoppipolla @ Jun 25th 2008 8:11AM
They output to 640 x 320 at $300 a pop.
Vanity aside, Engadget, what's your problem?:)
JohnM @ Jun 25th 2008 9:26AM
They output to 640x480! AKA VGA!
iHoppipolla @ Jun 25th 2008 12:22PM
Ooooooh. I see what you just did. You made it look like I didn't know that 640 x 320 = VGA or that I didn't know to call it VGA. Oh, you're good.
Maybe I'm alone in this but VGA does not mean much to me when we're still dealing with low-res eyewear devices. 640 IS still a step up from 320; a CONSIDERABLE step up if you've checked out the differences while looking into eyewear.
Yes, it's still a long ways away from SVGA (You see that? I used the fully-worded graphic standard instead of using the numerical equivalent.)
But we're still talking about a pretty sweet (and affordable! ) toy for the present.
iHoppipolla @ Jun 25th 2008 12:24PM
Oh, now I feel like an ass.
*cough* 640x480. *cough*
*puts on dunce hat*

>>> ...One of Myvu's claims to fame is that it uses optics you can see

HUD anyone?

I just realized I miss Veronica! These shades are nothing without her.
paul-engadget @ Jun 25th 2008 8:19AM
SVGA or WSVGA (800x480) and I might take them seriously.
if the eye pieces are independent, which I think they are, being able to play FPSs in 3D would be pretty cool, if you had virtual surround sound headphones too, all linked together with accelerometers to track head movement.
fred @ Jun 25th 2008 8:39AM
"the reviewer admitted that he "wouldn't be caught walking down the street" with 'em on."
Well #1, you're not supposed to be walking with them on, and #2, who on Earth would be so vain as to not be blown away with being able to have a pocket big screen display? I would love to have one just for the cool factor alone.
Randy Beck @ Jun 25th 2008 8:42AM
I hear these make you sick if you move your head around when watching
Randy Beck @ Jun 25th 2008 8:44AM
I hear you get sick if you watch these and move around
Artie Lange @ Jun 25th 2008 9:19AM
I hear you get sick watching other people wear these.
IT-Accountant @ Jun 25th 2008 8:51AM
I would gladly put up with the ridicule of every person I see (or don't see) if these had just a little bit better resolution. 720p anyone? Can we dream of 1080p?
computer.dude.28 @ Jun 25th 2008 10:36AM
Yes, because 720p on a 1-inch screen is totally gonna help..
dm @ Jun 25th 2008 11:46AM
Well, it probably -will- help if the screen is 1" away from your face...
Tim Brown @ Jun 25th 2008 9:00AM
Geordi La Forge anyone?
JohnM @ Jun 25th 2008 9:28AM
Did you think of that one all by yourself?
Tim Brown @ Jun 25th 2008 10:08AM
No, I had help
Josh Braun @ Jun 25th 2008 9:27AM
I can imagine these being a reasonable purchase for air commuters. Assuming you could hear the damn things with jet engines blaring, it wouldn't be a bad way to occupy yourself during long flights.
Of course, that'd be a very limited consumer base.
Bad Beaver @ Jun 25th 2008 9:29AM
Chiming in along with the "up the res" crowd. These things need to come with a higher resolution.
sorensilk @ Jun 25th 2008 9:35AM
Why doesn't someone just make a pair of these that look like standard sunglasses? That way we can all enjoy them without looking like idiots.
Ron Smith @ Jun 25th 2008 12:58PM
Well it is not there yet, but it is getting there. In a couple years maybe, when they are more refined. Also in 3D, that is only the reason why I would get it.
Lo @ Jul 16th 2008 2:05PM
I bough a pair at www.relaxview.eu and I have no complaints.
Iflyeverywhere @ Jul 31st 2008 4:00PM
I bought some too....what the hell, 30 days money back I couldn't refuse. Wasn't sure about wearing them when I first pulled them out on the plane. But with all the airlines cutting back, I was the only one watching some good flicks the entire trip!
