Sony unloads two new VGX-TP1 media center PCs
The tried-and-true circle PC is back, this time with even more potent hardware under the hood to keep your media churnin'. First up is the VGX-TP1D, which features a white motif, 2.1GHz Core 2 Duo T8100 processor, 2GB of RAM, a 320GB hard drive, GeForce 8400M GT graphics card, integrated WiFi, a dual-layer DVD writer and HDMI / VGA outs. The black VGX-TP1DQ / B steps it up by including a 500GB hard drive and a Blu-ray burner to boot. Both units also boast four USB 2.0 ports, 4-pin FireWire, a multicard reader, TV tuner and a wireless keyboard. Look for each to land in just over a fortnight (in Japan) for ¥150,000 ($1,392) / ¥200,000 ($1,856), respectively.

Damn... that's a pretty nice looking computer, but the price, not so much.
They shoved notebook components in a desktop chassis, i think those price are not to bad...
What is wrong with CE companies these days? Why do they keep coming up with oddly-shaped components that ruin the flow of other units in your entertainment set. The PS3 is horrible because you can't stack anything on top of it. The Xbox360 is a little better because you can place something on top of it. And now, Sony comes out with this monstrosity that I have a hard time figuring out what they based their design on. Was it a Goth birthday cake or a bar stool.
I would never place anything on top of my 360.
Considering the shape of the PS3, placing stuff on top is not an option so there's no discussion there.
True...I miss the days when game systems had simple shapes. I think a PS2 and PS3 shaped like the original Playstation but with a slot loading drive would have been fantastic.
Have to agree with Flashpoint (for once).
Putting things on top of your 360 sounds like an extraordinarily bad idea.
I've got a ps2 on top of my 360. I am a bad person. We're a bit pushed for space in the flat so I haven't really got a choice
Had it like that over a year now with no problems.
I didn't mean anything heavy on top of them. I have my 360 on top of my original Xbox and it works great. However, I can't put anything on top of my PS3 because, well we all know why. Why do they have to make their components so poorly shaped. So they can go on top of everything else? Now Sony leaves you no choice but to place this Oreo-shaped thing on top of everything else. Maybe I should try placing it on top of my PS3 and mail a picture of the mess to Sony.
Almost $2000 ?
That's ridiculous if its only coming with 2GB of RAM.
If I was at SONY, I'd give you 4GB of RAM + a Nvidia "280" so out of the box you could play CRYSIS...for that same $2000.
The size of the HD: 200GB, 250GB, 500GB etc would be YOUR CHOICE.
The next person who mentions an HTPC's (or any any PC, for that matter) ability to play Crysis, will be assumed to have 6.5 biological fathers.
sony computers have historically been more style over substance.
inexplicably they went flipside with the PS3 though...
That really is a bit much. I still have my old Sony Vaio desktop (back then they came in the normal shape) that I got for about $900. What did I get? 3Ghz Pentium 4, 512MB RAM, 200GB HDD, Card Reader, the whole works. That Sony is overpricing this is obvious; I don't know why though. I'm pretty disappointed. I would really buy a VAIO again, but now they're way too expensive. And they come in that ridiculous circle shape which I honestly can't logically fit anywhere. It's a shame they seem to have stopped marketing to the average PC buyer.
It's a SONY, what did you expect?
@ AJ
SONY designers are assumed to have 6.5 fathers.
I wish the ps3 looked like that.
Looks just like the Windows Home Server prototype.

Well its a good thing Sony decided to leave off the giant white stripe in the middle, because who really wants a giant Oreo sittng in their entertainment center?
That's not a computer. It's just a case for vinyl.
is this supposed to compete with the mini for HTPC setups? Don't think Blu Ray is worth the extra $1000.
I don't know what Sony is trying to do here. Sitting on a desk would be bad enough, but putting this inside a cabient is silly. Maybe they intended it to go in the closet underneath the wife's hat box?
i love these things and would already own one if it wasnt for the fact all the models have single tuner cards (in the UK at least)
in its defence it is a brilliant little box to have hooked up to your tv despite its somewhat low specs...but the price...
"Sony's new media PC doubles up as a Roomba Vac"
good stuff, but can santa afford to bring me one for Christmas?
The price is that because is for the japan market. New technology and models comes out very fast and the rate of people in japan consume product is at a high rate compare to US. Also, Japanese people are very proud of their country in that they will pay extra to buy from a Japanese company and product produce in japan.
At a side note how many component could you need for a home theater. HTPC will cover DVD, Blu ray, CD and hard drive base media. The Speakers and the receiver. Maybe if you are a gamer, PS2, PS3, XBOX and XBOX 360, Wii and SNES. That just seven components.
