Everex (mostly) acquired by NewMarket
Never heard of Everex? They're the smallish, low-end PC maker owned by FIC (who we'd guess also might not know) that makes the Cloudbook (among other things). We only mention them because a third, even more unfamiliar company, a systems integrator named NewMarket Technology, is buying out 75% of Everex to flesh out their mobile hardware presence in certain developing nations. The sum's undisclosed, the transaction's due for completion this September, and you might still be wondering what it all means to you. Well, unless you live in Asia or Latin America, probably not a whole lot.

@Alistair,,
Quote: "Everything about everex kicks ass..."
don't be frightened now, please tell us some details about why you think that this kicks ass.
Really I want to know, for instance:
Boot time
OS usability
Feel / Texture
Battery Life / Half Life
Sound
Hangs/Crashes
Keyboard - tactile feedback / size
Heat generation
Noise
How many applications can you have open before it becomes unusable ?
Webcam performance ?
Microphone ?
Slots : SD/CF/DVI/VGA/PCMCIA
Media Hardware : DVD/CD - External / Internal.
I know you ain't looking to make a full review, I can go elsewheree for that. But I am interested in the opinion of someone who actually uses this for something other than Email and Web browsing.
give it a go. please.

That's what she said.

Come on Ryan. Everex is one of the most hated companies on Engadget. Of course peps have heard of em. Please do a search of your own site.
But really...why does a billion $ company sell their UMPC baby to a no-name company. hmmm...
Seth @ Jun 27th 2008 2:12AM
Isn't FIC involved with OpenMoko?
pennyk @ Jun 27th 2008 2:21AM
Yeah, same company. Based in Taipei, i believe...
Setth @ Jun 27th 2008 2:29AM
Maybe this will quicken OpenMoko availability to the US. Saw that they are available, just not in US yet.
nathancourt @ Jun 27th 2008 2:18AM
EeePC? Wind? Mini-note? Asspire one? Yeah Everex is a bit goofy but "Cloudbook" is still the best name in the category!
stalkythefish @ Jun 27th 2008 8:37AM
Everex has been around since at least the late 80's when they made ISA I/O cards and such. I don't think they ever used to make retail-boxed stuff, but if you were a VAR, you knew who they were. Ah, the days of badly translated manuals: "features"="feathers", for example. Classic.
