Samsung Instinct gets disassembled, with instructions!

While most folks are understandably a little hesitant to pop anything more than the battery cover off of their phone, there are thankfully a brave few like those at Rapid Repair who are willing to throw caution (and their warranty) to the wind and tear things down to the bare essentials. As you may or may not be able to make out from the image above, their latest dissection involved the fast-selling Samsung Instinct and, as is their nature, they've included some step-by-step instructions in case you want to have a go at it yourself. Hit up the read link below for those, and plenty more pics.

I just set one of these up for my boss. The email setup is kind of a PITA. There doesn't appear to be any way to go back and check your mail server settings after you've clipped out of the screen, and the "Refresh" (that is code for Check mail now) is really slow, taking about 25 seconds to pull down a 2k "test" message. Also the refresh blocks you from doing anything useful, so you can't start a refresh and then start reading as they come in. I didn't see any options to do an automatic receive every x minutes either.
This whole "new user paradigm" of touch technology is lost on me. I kind of liked "buttons".

why???
I smashed mine accidentally, I woke up one morning, had the phone on my bed side table, when I got a text from a buddy, and it had a crack down the middle.
Cant I just smack it with a hammer?
After all its all going to come out if I do that right.
and they dont provide a way to put it back...so doesnt matter
For a second after reading the title, I assumed that Samsung gave users the ability to take apart their phone with directions, assuming it would still cover your warranty, and I thought "WHAT?! That's CrAzY!"
Then I read the article. Bummer.
I'm getting tired of that stupid Instinct commercial. It is everywhere! The commercial came on as I was typing this. I'm glad they took the fucking thing apart. And I hope the stupid bitch and the guy in the commercial get caught by the fucking police for having an inferior phone. The stupid bitch bought a handbag while she was in the fucking car. Fuck this phone, fuck Samsung, and fuck Sprint's crappy-ass network! And this was all typed with my iPhone's vertical keyboard, something the Instinct doesn't have because the touch screen is too small and the touch screen doesn't compare to the iPhone's.
Wow you are very ignorant, let's see... The Instinct has FULL GPS with software to run it, OTA music downloads, MMS, picture/video mail, video recorder, voice commands, 100% open source, etc. Yet you say it's inferior to the iphone? By the way, the Instinct has a landscape keyboard which is actually larger than the portrait keyboard of the iphone.
Hubba hubba. Naked Extinct. Ugly exterior, uglier interior. I now understand why it's inferior to the iPhone 3G. The iPhone interior is a work of art.
With it all apart like that, the Extinct should be a lot easier to puree in a blender.
Anybody catch which application processor chip this is running?
My instinct tells me to buy something else
I give Samsung credit for trying...
However the screen is just too damn small. The resolution isn't good enough for me. The internet is very slow in my honest opinion. And the interface is a lil stale.
But kudos to them for trying. Its selling well where I am so I'm happy for Samsung. I'll support their products over sony's any day of the week.
Theres another good instinct article here. Side by side video review.

to all the above posters:
I am almost 100% sure that NONE of you own an instinct to be saying any of the comments that you are saying. Inless you have tried it for yourself in depth, then i would not be making so many negative comments about something you dont even fully know about.
I do own an instinct, and i also own an itouch, are there alot of differences between the two that give them both their strong points? yes, there are. While its true that sprint did put the phone right up against iphone, without compairing it to one, its a darn good phone.
It has strong points that iphones lack and points that samsung could have probally done much better on, but no phone is perfect, NOT EVEN IPHONE (omg), so on a rating scale, to all the people who say this is a bad phone without even trying, then grow up, and to the ones compairing it to iphone, its no iphone, but it is a very well made phone that is of very good quality.
Michaelangelo,
I second your comment. i[enter noun here] have great function and design. Smooth screen, fast, but still w/ its own limitations.
I like my instict, and I really like the extra battery and case that it comes w/ it so far. I really hope sprint tweaks its network and software a bit more to make it as sharp and snappy as the i[enter noun here]. Internet is sometimes slow, but i'm hopeful (Firmware update please like Sammy does with their P2--another great alternative to the i[enter noun here]).
I have an instinct right here. the touchscreen isn't as responsive as iphone. the browser "IS" slow. the live tv is choppy as hell. camera is mediocre with no flash. iphone at least you can go to a wifi spot and get higher speed. but all those probs I listed could just be sprint in my area. of course my laptops broadband card also from sprint sittin in same spot gets much faster speed so don't know. oh and I can't get a freaking ringtone in this instinct without paying for it. I REALLY don't like that. yay I can put 8 gigs of mp3's and video's on the phone. but can't get them to work as a ringer which is total lame
Do you have a better resolution picture of the ICs inside? I couldn't tell from the pictures you have here.
i have a samsung finnese on the metropcs network which is the same as the instinct, just a different button structure. i pay $50 a month for unlimited text, local, long distance, & data. i have a feature rich GPS in the phone, html browser, picture messaging from the unbelievably clear 2 megapixel camera, accurate voice dialing that doesn't require a PhD to operate, and it converts my handwriting to text for messaging and notepad. did i mention $50 a month? oh, i almost forgot to mention, i never need to put on my glasses to read anything on the phone. that alone makes me happy.
to the guy who complained about no flash for the camera - READ THE MANUAL - there is a nightshot feature that i have found takes incredible pictures in very low light settings. there are a lot of great features on this phone. i have only a cell - no home phone - and this is the best phone i have ever owned. no, it's not an iphone, but it's damn close.
I have had an Instinct now for about a month, and it's truly awesome. I was able to speed up the browser and download Opera Mini which is really a neat app. I found plenty of free games, and have never had any problems when I was in the sprint network. I bought an extened battery online for $22 w/shipping and that has quadrupled the experience! I'd take this phone over the IPhone any day. Open source is well worth not having a tilt feature!
