Life with PlayStation in pictures and video
Pictures and video of Sony's new Life with PlayStation service have finally made their way across the Intertubes after yesterday's unveiling in Tokyo. It's pretty much exactly as you'd expect news and weather to be presented on a Cell-powered globe metaphor. Another snap and video courtesy of Digital World Tokyo after the break.

With these cool new features plus in game XMB confirmed and coming as well as the newly announced movie download service, I'd say its a exciting time to own a Playstation 3.
Not to mention Metal Gear Solid 4!
John @ Jun 27th 2008 9:10AM
This thing is so sexual. If only I had $600 to blow... :(
Andy @ Jun 27th 2008 11:17AM
600? Where do you live? Its been 399 for ages.
arkweld @ Jun 27th 2008 4:46AM
Yep, looks like NASA's World Wind app with a news plug in.
DrXym @ Jun 27th 2008 5:30AM
Integrated World Wind or Google Earth would be a fantastic feature.
ClarkyAC @ Jun 27th 2008 4:49AM
Dunno why people complain that this is a usless thing, if this useless dont use it ;)..
Cant hurt to add as many features to one thing as possible can it?

Poor old xbox 360... getting destroyed in every direction now. I want to buy a PS3 but it is just so ugly. Sony, hurry up with a redesign (no chrome please).
Nige @ Jun 27th 2008 5:51AM
"Poor old xbox 360... getting destroyed in every direction now"
Except for the games.
Gaz @ Jun 27th 2008 6:30AM
UGLY....you got bad eyes????
BobTurbo @ Jun 27th 2008 7:38AM
What, like MGS4? Oh wait, it doesn't have that. I am sure it has 100 or so doom-clones though.
Spawn Xe @ Jun 27th 2008 8:50AM
haha PS3 uglie than the XBox?.. man.. you must have awfull taste in women. Your lady has 3 eyes and full facial hair I bet.
slarity @ Jun 27th 2008 8:14AM
@bob stop crying and ebay yourself a 20gb with no chrome.
BobTurbo @ Jun 27th 2008 9:47AM
I never said it was uglier than the xbox.
Cool a no chrome version, I didn't know about that thanks!
tekdemon @ Jun 28th 2008 5:13AM
@Bob, yeah, because Gears of War, Bioshock, and Halo 3 are all just Doom clones.
Come to think of it, since Doom was actually a pretty revolutionary game for it's time, I'm not even sure a Doom clone is all that bad. After all, I enjoyed Hexen and Heretic and Quake, all of which are basically Doom clones.
BobTurbo @ Jun 28th 2008 6:19AM
Those games are better on the PC. I don't know how anyone plays a FPS with a console controller.
MGS4, 10/10 scores, not on 360 or PC. They even say GTA4 is better on PS3. There are even more of those potentially amazing games coming out for PS3 this year. Get a PS3 if you want the best games. Get a 360 if you want 100+ average games. In fact, as 360 will soon be the platform with the least marketshare, people won't even develop for it any more.
tekdroid @ Jun 28th 2008 12:23PM
I think you were being extremely nice when you said PS3 is ugly.
Ayman @ Jun 27th 2008 5:03AM
Now I know why the army has ordered 300 PS3,
"as you see general we can take over the world from this point, and here snake (MGS4) will be hiding in a box or a barrel and will infiltrate the terrorists..."
superaktieboy @ Jun 27th 2008 5:51AM
OMG :O that is sooo true lol
i guess its not only the MGS fans that like MGS4 xD
eric @ Jun 27th 2008 5:09AM

nicolas.exc @ Jun 27th 2008 5:17AM
looks like Google Earth
DrXym @ Jun 27th 2008 5:31AM
Is that the new name for the Earth these days?
Yevon @ Jun 27th 2008 12:03PM
"This just in: Google has just sued the Earth for patent infringement on Google Earth. Details at 11."
Kevin @ Jun 27th 2008 1:03PM
I wouldn't mind integration with Google Earth. Just imagine soaring across the landscape with live simulated weather conditions, time of day, and terrain mapping. Putting all the PS3s power to work would be fantastic with the additional news feeds.
chefgon_ign @ Jun 27th 2008 6:51AM
Isn't this the exact same thing that the Wii has been doing for years?
Guibock @ Jun 27th 2008 7:13AM
Yes, it looks exactly the same (not in HD...) in the News channel of the Wii.
You can turn the globe and get the news of the country you are flying over.
riggs @ Jun 27th 2008 9:40AM
for years?!?
Alex @ Jun 27th 2008 10:45AM
How long have you been Wiiing?
Years?!
Time Troll!
DelSource @ Jun 28th 2008 9:02AM
Ignoring the factually incorrect "years" claim, Nintendo stole it from PC/Mac so what's your point?
But then again, Nintendo fans are like Apple fans in that they like to change history for them. You know, just like claiming Nintendo invented the Wiimote (it was actually pitched to Nintendo by two independent companies, a third had been working on the same thing for years, and another game company had prototyped it in about 1999).
chefgon_ign @ Jun 27th 2008 6:53AM
Who cares that Xbox 360 has a vastly superior game library? Look! Pretty globes!
spook4thecia @ Jun 27th 2008 11:23AM
HAH! Halo? That's all you got. The 360 has peaked. All downhill from here. I know you Xbox fanboys are getting nervous. It's ok, we'll welcome you over here on the real gaming console when you realize your mistake. Don't forget to bring your add-on HD-DVD drive...oh wait....
Here's some therapy for you--
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xHdozBNxPdQ
See ya soon!
Christy McGrory @ Jun 28th 2008 11:53AM
360 has peaked? I think not. What about the coming of Gears of War 2, Banjo Kazooie, Dead Space, ABP, and Ninja Gaiden 2. I rest my case.
ShadowKain @ Jun 27th 2008 8:28AM
Dare I say a serious competitor to Google Earth?
aanidaani @ Jun 27th 2008 8:35AM
Now if they'd only let you zoom into the map and assume the role of a freedom fighter waging war in the Middle East...
ryan @ Jun 27th 2008 9:05AM
of corse
right when i get rid of my PS3
they roll out all the new features
UGHHH =/
oki @ Jun 27th 2008 10:38AM
Same here.. i miss my ps3 already
hiko36 @ Jun 27th 2008 10:23AM
hahaha... it looks like they took about 3 existing features and rolled them into one:
1) That Globe is from the music player
2) The close up of the US is from Folding @ Home
3) The information is obviously coming from the internet
Still look interesting...
edge @ Jun 29th 2008 5:55PM
Err, that globe isn't from the music player. As you can see, it has clouds/weather effects as well as city lights representing the major cities. And while I haven't seen it in real life, I'd like to think this globe is probably more detailed than the one in the music player.
Pepsipoint @ Jun 27th 2008 10:32AM
LOL i love it when anyone mentions xbox they auto get low ranked. Silly people, there aren't any other options cept the ps3
Ethan @ Jun 27th 2008 11:06AM
Well, people who are interested in the ps3 are the ones looking at it. I'm thinking I might buy a ps3 in the future, so I've clicked on the article. So it's more natural selection that bias, people who prefer the virtues of this machine to others will be reading.
Now, trolls and reactionaries of any kind will land on any article mentioning a console (or whatever their preferred battleground) upon a keyword in the title. For instance, troll du jour 'clak' will go on any article mentioning an OS and vomit on it.
wrabbit @ Jun 27th 2008 10:32AM
You know what would be really funny. If every time you wanted to check the weather you'd have to load the globe and rotate to your city.
This is a bit of an overkill for weather really - just give me a number and a nice picture approximating cloud level and I'm good to go.
kris @ Jun 29th 2008 3:54PM
i'm sure that there will be a default location setting... just like google earth
Ethan @ Jun 27th 2008 10:52AM
The first pic is like "take that, weather channel!"
I do expect Microsoft will have a response to Sony's current barrage of promise. Difference is they'll have a launch date. They should at the very least, give weather and news through xbox live silver.
And why does everything have to have nauseating, almost cultish, names? "Playstation Home" "Life with Playstation"? That advert show beginning with Q? They need to be reaching out to people like me who don't want it to be "the centre of their entertainment lives."
majortom1981 @ Jun 27th 2008 12:27PM
So basically they saw that the wii did it and said we must do this also.
ozzzy @ Jun 27th 2008 1:34PM
Interesting...I guess for free you can't complain. Sony is attempting to help out the geographically illiterate. To me this is resources taken away from Home and improving the online experience.
BTW I'd like to congratulate the fan boys and girls on five years of pointless arguing. Their persistence has greatly improved the lives of all forum and blog readers and defended the reputations of multi-billion dollar corporations with no means of defending themselves.
entropyman @ Jul 4th 2008 11:52AM
sony is a big company and won't run out of resources by making a realtime rss channel-- and from what I have seen home is just running bugfixes- at least i sure do hope so - I am really wanting to get my hands on it
SN @ Jun 27th 2008 7:26PM
WTF is he saying? Why is a Japanese/Asian guy giving the presentation? Sony is American. They've been American since they came out w/ the walkman.
tekdroid @ Jun 28th 2008 12:30PM
Akio Morita became Adam Moore in 1979 on the day they released the Walkman, you're right!
SNKILLER @ Jul 30th 2008 2:14PM
SN your a fool
Sony was founded by 2 japanese people and thus sony is a japanese
