Nike+ gym equipment coming July -- iPhone integration imminent?
24 Hour Fitness just announced that it will be the first to offer Nike+ iPod enabled gym equipment at select clubs starting next month. The press release says the following:
"Nike and Apple worked with major gym equipment manufacturers to make their cardio equipment Nike + iPod compatible so gym members can easily track and record workouts on cardio equipment like treadmills, stair steppers, elliptical trainers and stationary bikes."
The press release only mentions the iPod nano. In fact, that may be all that we're talking about here. Nevertheless, July is synonymous with the iPhone 3G, 2.0 firmware, and App Store launches and there's that little ol' patent application (the source of the picture above) which describes leveraging the iPhone's sensors to turn it into a "lifestyle companion." Nike of course, already confirmed that its Plus system would be extending to the iPhone and iPod touch sometime in the future. July seems as good a time as any don't you think?

why does it say 4' 24".... wouldnt that be 6 feet?
bob sakamano @ Jun 27th 2008 8:08AM
thats time not distance
Adam @ Jun 27th 2008 8:15AM
obviously you don't workout... 4 minutes 24 seconds... :-)
Bob @ Jun 27th 2008 8:29AM
Your mom doesn't work out.
Vic20 @ Jun 27th 2008 9:15AM
Uh huh! And she works out to Sting, too! I bet you think Sting is, like, a bee or something!!
iHoppipolla @ Jun 27th 2008 9:58AM
Well, the upside of redundant Crysis jokes is that they make "your mama" jokes seem almost refreshing... and fresh.

How cool would be this software if it ties into the GPS? It could do detailed maps of exactly where you ran, and what places slowed your pace or made you walk.
I want!
Adam @ Jun 27th 2008 8:25AM
You mean like the Garmin Forerunner series?
If Nike can incorporate GPS tracking into Nike+, I'm all for it. Throw in a HRM too.
Bob @ Jun 27th 2008 8:32AM
I believe I read somewhere in the SDK that there is a clause that says you cannot track in real-time. I would think that would prevent this, but it would be a neat feature.
Adam @ Jun 27th 2008 8:39AM
@Bob,
That's true. But the point of instant tracking would be for turn-by-turn directions. Nike+ could be viewed as a device that records (breadcrumbs) instead of an at-the-moment device.

This is exactly what I want. I'm not 100% sold on the 3G iPhone since I already have the first one. But if Nike releases and app that tracks my jogging path, pace, etc. that I can keep a record of like the current Nike+ stuff I'm sold. The iPhone would be a little bulky to jog with but totally worth it with this feature.

Looks good, but I already have a samsung f110 and it works great.
bob sakamano @ Jun 27th 2008 8:09AM
i think... the have "5 minutes" below but i think thats just a total time for the "interval"
Turin @ Jun 27th 2008 8:16AM
I dunno about the iPhone. The Nano is easy enough to stow away whilst exercising. The iPhone I think is a little too bulky jog with. Addy dedicated a similar post to you on Gizmodo, do you ever sleep Thomas?

Its very interesting that this mock up of the application seems to show the entire device, which doesn't have a home button. It looks a lot like what we thought the iphone would look like before the iphone was real.
hello @ Jun 27th 2008 1:26PM
hmm thats what i thought also
the device looks like a full screen ipod video

PowerTap by Saris has just announced compatibility with the Garmin units, particularly the Edge 705. Team Garmin-Chipotle is going to be using these units in the upcoming TdF. The really cool thing would be if Garmin would put this capability in the Nuvifone series. I never go out riding or running without a cellphone for safety's sake. Integration in that medium would be an awesome thing, particularly for duathletes and triathletes.

Chipotle makes the best burritos.

The Nike+ system got me off my ass and exercising, but now I'm fed up with the limitations of the shoe sensor and soooo ready for this !
siostra-rana @ Jun 27th 2008 9:41AM
so......when is it going to be freaking available for the iPod Classic -_-
Ethan @ Jun 27th 2008 10:37AM
Somebody needs a new laser printer.
I personally use a mirror, and the effect on what I can do, not a computer to see if I'm doing enough exercise. The value of these products are, I think, in making the user feel good about themselves and enlarging their achievements. Which won't help you keep fit. It could help somebody who has trouble committing.

I think Zyked (www.zyked.com) is working on something like this...

You guys need to read the details a little better. The ipod connects to cardio equipment and then keeps track of your time and such that way, through the machine. I know this cause i work for the company that is making and supplying the ipod connections for the cardio machines. it doesn't track outside of that so it won't track you if you go jogging outside or something.
Dano @ Jun 27th 2008 6:45PM
except, that nike+ is a system for running outside already. the discussion that is going on here is if the nike+ software will use the integrated GPS in the iphone 3G as a supplement to the current accelerometer, instead of said accelerometer when they enable support for iPhones & iPod touches.
tehashi @ Jun 27th 2008 8:57PM
Funny...seems to me that the title of the thread is "Nike+ gym equipment coming July -- iPhone integration imminent?" which would mean it was talking about using the ipod on equipment...not outdoors.
Tom65 @ Jun 28th 2008 1:38AM
can't wait to try it out!
radiko11 @ Jun 28th 2008 11:55AM
