Nokia unleashes Supernova series: meet the 7210, 7310, 7510, and 7610
Though they've already been well documented (heck, they're already on sale in some parts of the world), Nokia's just now getting around to making its foursome of Supernovas official. The new line reps mid-range fashion (think L'Amour, but not over the top) and comes in your choice of two candybars, a flip, or a slider as the 7210, 7310, 7510, or 7610, respectively. The 7210 features a tri-band GSM radio plus EDGE, a 2 megapixel camera, and an FM radio; look for it to launch in the third quarter for €120 (about $189). The 7310 apes the 7210's look but adds support for changeable Xpress-On faceplates, TV-out, and support for GSM 850, and while all that extra kit adds €35 (about $55) to the price over the lesser model, it's available now. The 7510 goes for the flip form factor but carries over most of the 7310's spec sheet, waiting it out until the fourth quarter for a €180 (about $283) launch in scary colors like "Fatal Red". Finally, the 7610 (no, not that one) moves up to a beefier 3.2 megapixel camera and hits next quarter for €225 (about $354).

so... what i'm wondering is, what makes a phone post "important" enough to be promoted from engadget mobile
DefPo3t @ Jun 27th 2008 3:23AM
the words apple,rim,new

Our highly-developed sense of knowing exactly what you personally want in a cellphone, obviously.
eggothewaffle @ Jun 27th 2008 3:31AM
In this comment thread: Chris Ziegler brings the pain.
By the way Chris, would you happen to know a Mark Ziegler who goes to Johns Hopkins? Totally random, but my curiosity has got me wondering.
phanbouy @ Jun 27th 2008 3:34AM
hey, i don't know.. maybe this phone has a lot of buzz about it? i'm still using my beat up old cheapie Nokia GSM phone after my trauma of cracking my iphone
Justin @ Jun 27th 2008 3:14AM
Wow, they really did run out of model numbers... Time for a new naming schema.
Niz @ Jun 27th 2008 4:04AM
I agree i though the started using the preceeding letter like N and E they should have used C for classic M for music? or they should have at least continued like 7220, 7320, 7520 and 7620 i dont know about the other but im sure many of us will remember the 7210
BobTurbo @ Jun 27th 2008 3:17AM
Is there a men's version?
Shinigami @ Jun 27th 2008 3:45AM
Slider in black color, 7610. More info can be found on Mobile-Review.
BratPAQ @ Jun 27th 2008 3:29AM
im just wondering, will nokia ever run out of 4-digit number for models? or will they ever mistakenly release a model with an number which already been used, somehow it eludes them that that number has already been assigned.
another question, how many cellphone models does nokia have, new and old models?
Justin @ Jun 27th 2008 3:36AM
As Chris alluded to in the post, they're actually reusing the 7610 model number. It was first used with an S60 handset from 2004.
Nokia's always had a problem with the four-digit naming schema, which is part of the reason the N-Series and E-Series was born.
I mean hey, the company cranks out 50+ handsets per year now.
sr1329 @ Jun 27th 2008 2:35PM
I wish at least the 7610 was a S60 phone keeping with the old 7610 which was the only S60 of the L'amour line.
phanbouy @ Jun 27th 2008 3:30AM
i love how $70 buys you an extra mega pixel. that way, your blurry pics can take up more of the screen.
w @ Jun 27th 2008 10:10AM
oh, then you will love to know that it also buys you an extra 4x digital zoom, an extra led flash, extra memory and a tv-out. that way, you get more and blurier pics that can take up more of your tv screen.
Shinigami @ Jun 27th 2008 3:46AM
Nokia! Where's 8-megapixel camera-phone with higher quality than N82-N95?
sr1329 @ Jun 27th 2008 2:37PM
Quality in digital photography is not measured by megapixels. However bragging rights are.

thats a fun feature for teenagers isn't it ?

Nokia: "never-knowingly-avoiding-chrome-trim-in-a-navkey" school of design.
sr1329 @ Jun 27th 2008 2:38PM
Ha Ha!
Mobius_1 @ Jun 27th 2008 5:22AM
I like this new clean, sleek, slick design so many products are using these days, including what must not be mentioned, much nicer than "bling", gold and chrome
Tombio @ Jun 27th 2008 8:03AM
Is there actually a limit to how many times they can wrap the same hardware into different kind of wrapping. I mean come on, how about dropping the amount of new models to something like 1/10 of current rate and focus on getting something new on market at faster rate.
Pdexter @ Jun 27th 2008 8:23AM
It's not like Sams dosen't do it or Moto or SE. Actually Samsung releases more phones than Nokia and has 15% market share compared to Nokia's 40%.
People want different phones and Nokia gives it. Especially when you consider that you will see in some Asian and European countires to have more than 60% of people having Nokia phone so they need to offer phones in different shells.
I don't get that they should give something new? They should give consumers 5mp camera phone with 150$ price tag? This actually has even TV out that's really really rare on phones with this price range.
tekdroid @ Jun 28th 2008 10:35AM
if they limited the shells of their phones, they'd limit their market. Simple as that.
People buy based on looks just as much if not more than features and that's evident by looking at Nokia's range and of their competitors; several very similar and/or identically-specced phones in their respective price ranges, and quite often differing only in looks.
L.M @ Jun 27th 2008 8:30AM
Got a agree with that. That's how the top 5 sells phones and these actually are pretty rich on the feature side. They would be dead compared Samsung and SE if they dropped the amount of phones to 1/10.
Some people just have to bash Nokia no matter what :D
Tombio @ Jun 27th 2008 8:52AM
I'm not trying to bash Nokia. I actually use Nokia phone myself and the whole mobile phone industry ows a great deal to the company. It's just that I see no point in making 5 phones that are more or less the same save the shell.
w @ Jun 27th 2008 10:13AM
@Tombio
Profit.
you know, that thing companies depend on.
Adrian Williams @ Jun 27th 2008 8:58AM
Why are people so anal here
These are the phones cell companies will be offering for Free or at a heavy discount
U. Betchya @ Jun 27th 2008 7:28PM
Series 40 at a Series 60 price? NO THANK YOU!
Nokia missed it by not including Series 60 as the OS in these, the newly-announced 7210, 7310, 7510, and 7610.
Series 40 is a stunted, featureless PoS.
These are $150 phones, if that, folks. Don't fall for the 'pretty'.
cub3 @ Jun 27th 2008 11:47PM
Nokia is soon to follow the Motorola road...
correct formulae @ Jun 28th 2008 12:52PM
The correct plural of supernova is supernovae. Get your shit together.
lol @ Jul 1st 2008 3:22PM
much like the use of "formulae", supernovae is a bit archaic these days. Not saying it's not correct, but it's not common anymore. Neither is "indices" versus indexes. Oddly enough, firefox's spell checker is trying to tell me that both formulae and indices are incorrect, but is just fine with both supernovae and supernovas. Go figure.
I don't blame you, though. I still get a little annoyed anytime someone uses "fishes" as a noun.
ian mcgrady @ Jun 28th 2008 3:58PM
still usin' my nokia e61
it takes a lickin' & keeps on tickin'
uses ATT's 3G internet just fine, thanks
and now I've moved everything to the cloud
I don't have to worry about the sync problemos that plagued me as an early adapter
oZ @ Jul 1st 2008 1:53PM
No, it doesn't use AT&T's 3G internet just fine, but it sure does use their EDGE just fine.
