Apple releases Leopard 10.5.4 update
Looks like the latest Leopard update, 10.5.4, just landed. Nothing big, but all the details are after the break; Mac users, you know how to snag it. General
- Includes recent Apple security updates.
- Resolves an issue with saving and reopening Adobe Creative Suite 3 files on a remote server.
- Includes additional RAW image support for several cameras.
- Addresses an issue that may result in a partially installed X11 application.
- Improves L2TP VPN client reliability.
- Addresses AirPort reliability issues with 5GHz networks.
- Addresses AirPort issues that may result in slower performance in Logic Studio or MainStage.
- Improves overall iCal reliability for meeting requests, cancellation notices, delegation, and syncing with iPhone.
- Resolves an issue that prevents deleting an iCal event without notifying the creator.
- Addresses an issue in which events in all calendars affect availability. A checkbox now enables information-only calendars to be transparent from free/busy lookups.
- Resolves a UI issue preventing delegated calendars from showing up as a separate window.
- Addresses an issue with copying and pasting attendees from one event to another.
- Resolves an issue in which iCal may not delete events after a specified time interval, even when set to do so in iCal preferences.
- Addresses an issue in which To Dos cannot be marked private.
- Addresses a potential performance issue when loading secure web pages.
- Resolves issues that may be encountered when accessing secure web pages with client certificates that reside on a smart card.
- Addresses an issue in which switching from a space with a Finder window keeps the Finder as the active application instead of the application residing in the destination space.
- Fixes an issue in which dragging an application from the list of application assignments in Spaces System Preferences does not assign the application to the desired space.
- Resolves an Exposé issue that may result in only a subset of windows being shown.

Why hello to you too kind sir. You never see people this polite on Engadget. Thank you for making my day.
I'm a little upset Apple, the update didn't fix this problem as addressed:
Addresses an issue in which switching from a space with a Finder window keeps the Finder as the active application instead of the application residing in the destination space.
it had been annoying me lately and I was glad to see Apple taking care of it but it still exists =(
Last time I checked, this was Engadget, not Apple.
@BK: Same thing, isn't it?
Interesting..I use VirtueDesktops on Tiger and the same thing always happens...something to do with the desktop switch perhaps?
Apple releases buggy software!?!?!?!
How can this be?!?!?!?!
Does it fix the habit of the Dock to go transparent on its own? (Logging out won't fix it, you have to restart.)
Does it fix the weird transient badness in Mail 3.3?
Does it give me the ability to get rid of that odd Time Machine space wallpaper on my login screen?
I'm less than a week into Leopard after upgrading from Tiger and I'm still bug hunting.
The login wallpaper is easily changed.
Just swap /System/Library/CoreServices/DefaultDesktop.jpg with whatever you want.
We call is bug fix, Apple fanboys call it "bonus features".
oops... it for is.
Which fanboys are you referring to? I didn't see anybody saying that.
Roach is SMASH! RAARRGH!
How about using airport express with Front Row! I don't get that. Why can't we use it.
+1
I understand the change that took place that forced it's removal from FrontRow 2, but not adding it back in is one of the stupidest things I've seen Apple do in a while.
Everyone who reads Engadget should just save themselves the trouble and sit in a corner, hands over their ears, shouting "LALALALALALALALALALALALA!"
Is it too much to ask for a fucking fix for my wireless "scanning" all the time? My fucking wireless connection is useless.
@aanidaani
You know it just scans when you click the Airport thing right? And as for your wireless connection being useless, then turn it off (Airport>Turn Airport Off) and plug in an ethernet cable!
@Josh, if that is true, does anybody else find it scary that they need to update the OS just so you can use a phone with the computer? It is one thing to say "we found some bugs in the OS while developing the iPhone app, so we fixed them." That would be good. It is another thing to say "We had to alter the OS so that we could develop the iPhone app." That would be bad. It is even worse if you have to update the OS just to use a bunch of web services.
Isn't that the same kind of stuff that everybody hates Microsoft for doing?
According to some users over at InsanelyMac, 10.5.4 seems to be working on OSx86 machines downloaded straight from Software Update. I'm gonna give it a shot when I get home tonight. For anyone trying that, I recommend backing up your extensions folder and dong a Time Machine backup as well.
hehe, you said dong.
apple fixes problems with their software and devices. that is good for apple's customers. i wonder why people are complaining about updates, as long as it's free and it works?
if it weren't working or if it weren't free then i'd be complaining but....
Still having problems with CS3 after the update. Looks like macs aren't a viable option for graphic designers anymore. :0(
Have to stick to PC's at work for their better stability LOL
There are very few options when it comes to developing software such as this.
1) Develop and squash as many bugs as you can until you think the customers are itching for a new version. Release updates for the bugs or annoyances that pop up once the amount of people using the software grows immensely from the size of the test group. People will complain about the fact that the software wasn't 100% perfect at release, but they won't complain too much about waiting.
2) Develop and squash as many bugs as you can until you think the customers are itching for a new version. Never release an update again. After all, the first release was perfect, right? The complaints here are obvious.
3) Spend many years developing, searching for every tiny bug. People will complain about having to wait so long for the new version, plus there inevitably still be bugs for people to discover and whine about the fact that it took you so long and it still wasn't perfect.
So, it's pretty hard (impossible) to win.
No Diablo 2 fix.
Which like hundreds of people want.
Just re-enable 256 colours damn it Apple!
It's just like they WANT us to install Windows.
Uh no seeing as how the update is seamless.
Finally. God knows we need this. Leopard is the buggiest OS coming out of Cupertino in years.
*starts software update*
*Software Update... Success*
*nikster... Fail*
@The HO-ne
Okay, so Apple is releasing some new and amazing technologies. It would absolutely make sense they update the OS to work with a new "phone". When new features are released, typically they don't automatically appear in the software, Apple may be advanced, but they haven't got their code rewriting itself for future advances....
The difference is when a new device is released for your PC, you have to install a bunch of 3rd party software, wait to plug it in, restart after the bluescreen, then run the software, only to have it tell you lit needs to update, then rinse & repeat BSD.....
With Apple, their stuff works out of the box....

@YesHone
Are you eight years old?
I Love You ALL!
Faslane
Cool now where's my Holographic Iphone ?
Right beside the Unicorn.
Unicorn Planet, HAAAAAY!
What a meaningless post, really. When 10.5.5 comes out will we throw a party and run down the street shouting "Hail Apple?" Hell no. Yes Leopard is great, but like windows updates or updates for your favorite linux, unless it fixes a major problem...SNOOZE
Need new Macmini now !
@Worm
My dad can beat up your dad!
Word is still a bit funky with expose when going from another application back to a word window under 10.5.4. It still selects the last word window that was being used instead of the one you actually selected.
also, diablo 2 is still busted on nvidia GPUs due to the 256 color mode being removed from the nvidia drivers in 10.5.3 (and not fixed in 10.5.4).

Sure D2 is an 8+ year old game, but point releases shouldn't break / remove functionality.
for example, when they removed classic from 10.5 I knew that going in and weighed my options before upgrading. However, I didn't know that going from 10.5.2 to 10.5.3 would deprive me of my precious.
hopefully Apple will make it right soon.
What I want in an update is what they did back in Tiger. I want the address book to sync to my bluetooth phone and tell me if theres a call/test message coming.
Uuuuuuu you mac nerds finally got an update! Welcome to July 1 2008. Theres other stuff aside your tightly controlled environment.
Maybe it's just my computer but suddenly iSync disappeared and doesn't work after doing this update. It "is not supported on this architecture".
@Encoding
But no, no, that can't be true. *Twitch Twitch*. Apple software works right out of the box. There can't be any bugs *twitch twitch*. My Apple brethen YesHone has even explained it as so. Apple is never wrong, never bad. *Twitch Twitch*
Bugs in Apple software?! This can't be true because Steve says Mac's just work! LOL
Grow up.
Old joke. Unreasonable stance.
And besides, I swear there's a damned security update for Windows every time I boot it up, so it's not like the alternative is immune to needing updates and bug squashes.
@YesHone:
well ofc it's easier and doesn't require 3rd party software... it's the same company, installing a Microsoft mouse on a windwos machines doesn't require 3rd party software either...
@NoHone:
well that's how it is... different standards... but ofc since they are integrating it into the OS, an OS update is needed... catch MS doing that and they get sued for abusing their monopoly. :P
but always nice with updates & bug fixes...
fiends of software updates are we now..
I have found this update to slow my MacBook down when starting up. and yes I have restarted a few times it wasn't the first time after installing the update. But I'm glad that its sorted out some of my problems I was having, but they were only little ones.
I'm currently on 10.5.2, is this 560MB worth it?
The VPN update really is a biggy for those who have had problems (whole universities worth of mac users) connecting to thier work networks for more than 5 minutes. Previously I'd been forced to run windows in fusion and access from there!
