We feel for all of you in California who are dealing with the new
hands-free legislation that came down upon you today like an edict from your overlords. If you're one of the unlucky few who get nailed by the 5-0 for talking on your cellphone while driving, though, there's some silver in those dark clouds. Headsets.com is giving away the
Plantronics Discovery 925 bluetooth earpiece -- worth $150 clams -- in exchange for proof that you were pulled over. Now, don't go talking on your cellphone in the hope of getting one of these, though -- that $20 fine could get you a decent headset today anyway.

And remember, people, after administrative fees, that $20 fine will cost you closer to $100.

What a crazy promotion! At least they're not asking for you to hold your wee.

I thought we were getting hit in Cali starting tomorrow, July 1st not today, June 30th.

you are correct. it's starts July 1st.

You're right. The Aber alert in the freeway says hands-free devices will be required on July 1st. I saw it this morning before work. (By the way, how did the handset people get a law passed that would both require all of us to buy their handsets AND score free advertising on the Amber alert freeway billboards????)
polvadis @ Jun 30th 2008 4:06PM
That is correct. July 1st is the correct date.

They can afford to give away a few dozen, checking the prices on their website headsets.com -- they're seriously overpriced. I'd check out pricegrabber.com and also eBay (but make sure it's actually cheaper on eBay with shipping cost)
geomguy @ Jun 30th 2008 4:22PM
I tried 3 types of wireless headphones and although these are not the "latest" I got them on eBay for a good price and they do the job.
1. the jabra 250 is the most comfortable
2. the plantronics m3000 is the best working but uncomfortable and looks like a thing growing out of my head.
3. the bluespoon ax is the least obtrusive and pretty comfortable,

Hey headsets.com -- how about sharing the love? The same law goes into effect in Washington state tomorrow too.
SweetSauce @ Jun 30th 2008 4:54PM
Hello, fellow Washingtonian- you beat me to the begging. But I will add; Pretty Please?
Dan Davis @ Jun 30th 2008 5:14PM
Seattle resident here, let me chip in my 2 cents...
The Washington law is a secondary offense, meaning that the cop has to pull you over for something other than jawing away on your phone. The California law is a primary offense, so the LAPD can pull you over on the spot if they spot you talking.
Comparitively, we have it better :)

California is late in the Game. New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York and I think Virginia had this law for a while now. It's like the no smoking in doors law, eventually almost every state will have it in effect. Doesn't bother me, all my cars are manual transmission and all of them have bluetooth built-in. It's kind of tough driving stick while talking on the phone.
Yobobie @ Jun 30th 2008 6:29PM
Pennsylvania has no such law.
drathos @ Jun 30th 2008 9:19PM
Virginia has not such law, but Washington, DC does.

So let me get this straight: Pay a $20 fine, get a $130 gadget? Are they crazy? They do realize that this is nothing-is-ever-my-fault America, right? I wonder how long before someone causes an accident and blames it on this gadget promotion.

In Perth, West Australia the fine was just increased to A$250 and 3 demerit points for using the mobile while driving ($1 Aus = 96c US)
Gordon E @ Jul 1st 2008 1:56PM
I don't see anything on there where it says it is California only.
CNet had a story on this yesterday, and it said "giving away 730" -- that's a pretty specific number if you ask me. Seems made up, but it is definitely not one.
gmang @ Jul 1st 2008 8:28PM
Quoted from the website...
". If we do run out of the Discovery 925, we'll send you another headset.
To get started, simply fill out the information below and click continue. Limited time offer - we reserve the right to limit quantities without notice."
If thats the case, they could have ran out of "stock" today..... great marketing poly though....
oly va ha @ Jul 2nd 2008 1:37AM
i read into the law and from what i read they can only ticket you if your doing something else illegal (speeding or whatnot) then again i may be wrong but thats just what i got from it...im not going to try and find out either
rexi @ Jul 2nd 2008 1:41PM
The penalty In Singapore is 2 years imprison, 6 stroke of cane, driving license confiscated. This is very mild in US.
After the law been impose no one in Singapore has try to use cell phone while driving again.
One of the safest country in the world today.

Hey Guys and Gals,
So I am not that proud that i got a ticket for using my cell phone while driving. But thanks to Headsets.com they sent me a FREE bluetooth headset!!!!!!
The company was in the news for a promoting the dangers of not using a hands free device while driving and was offering a Free bluetooth headset if you got a ticket. Well i was stupid enough to get one. So i thought that i would check out this website to see if i could actually get one. Not only did they send me one, they sent me a top of the line Plantronics Discovery 925. This thing retails for $129.95 and it is a very nice piece of equipment. They even shipped it Fed Ex overnight!!!
Now keep in mind that this cost me NOTHING!!!!!!. If this company is willing to go out of their way for me and i didn't even purchase anything, I can only imagine how they actually treat "paying" customers.
Im not telling anyone to go out and get a ticket, But i would ask that if you need to buy a headset, because its the law now, Please check them out before you make your purchase. You guys know that i like getting the best possible deal, and their prices are Excellent. I have not been contacted in anyway by this company to give them exposure or anything else. The only contact that i have had was to send them a copy of my ticket, and an email with a fed ex tracking number. I am doing this all on my own, and i would like people to get this great company's name out.
Please feel free to pass this email along to other friends and family. http://www.headsets.com/
thanks for reading
