Finally, a piece of news we can actually do something with. AT&T today announced its pricing structure for the next iteration of Apple's
iPhone -- which you can plunk down money for come 8 am, July 11th. There's not much that's surprising here -- new customers and those eligible for an upgrade will be able to nab the phone for $199 (8GB) or $299 (16GB), while "early upgraders" will have to fork over $399 or $499, all with a two year contract and $18 upgrade fee, of course. The telco says a no-commitment version of the phone will be available for $599 and $699, though it looks like that will come after the initial launch. AT&T appears to be leaning pretty heavily towards the all-in unlimited plans, but there are options if you don't want to go that route. We've sorted out the basics after the break, and included AT&T's "iReady" video -- certainly good for a few chuckles.
Notes:
- iPhone 3G will be available for $199 (8GB) and $299 (16GB) for iPhone customers who purchased an iPhone prior to 7/11, customers activating a new line with AT&T and current AT&T customers who are eligible for an upgrade
- Existing AT&T customers who are not currently eligible for an upgrade discount can purchase iPhone 3G for $399 for the 8GB model or $499 for the 16GB model. Both options require a new two-year service agreement.

I love Holland!
I think I'm not fully understanding something about the Family Talk pricing. If I am already part of a Family Talk plan with regular handsets, can I just start using the iPhone on that or do I need to pay $39.99 on top of that to use the iPhone? Or is that just for additional iPhones and the first one is fine?
Same question as per texting with the iPhone on the Family Plan. We already have a package, can I just use them as if I was another family member with a different phone?
Thanks for any help.
If you decide to get the iPhone your plan can stay exactly the same as it is now. The only thing that will change is the unlimited data for iPhone will be attached to your line. The unlimited family messaging will still apply to every phone on the family account including the iPhone.
Thanks Coolone. I assume then that I just need to pay an extra $30 for the unlimited data.
Yeah that's correct, you'll have to have the $30 unlimited data for iPhone.
So here is my question if anyone can help me out.
I am a tmobile shadow user. Lets say I wanna go an buy the iphone in att and sign up for a new plan. I get the 8 gig for $200 and then at the end of that month cancel my contract for $175. Boom done, I keep my iphone for $375 total and unlock it for my tmobile plan?
I watched the Steve Jobs Keynote where he flashed the price on the giant screen that said $199....the crowd roared!!! Not $199 plus a couple extra hundred or so that AT&T wants to gouge you out of. Not to mention charging for using the actual technology the phone you buy uses (3G)....AND charging for the text messaging!! What next 10¢ per song you play....maybe $1.00 extra to watch a movie. Apple needs to reigns these jerkoffs in! I bought the orig iPhone, but I'm staying away from this crap!!!
Is there even a crack to unlock this phone out yet? I'm sure it will eventually happen but are yu willing to be a tester? Not me...me no likey being the guinea pig.
Well,no im not willing to be a test but they already unlocked 2.0 and the hardware is almost identical. There is no reason to think that Apple and ATT all of a sudden developed an unhackable device. The method they are using to prevent the unlocking is the in-store activation.
quit whining haters. This plan is awesome sauce, especially compared to the Canadian Rogers Plan. Unlimited data is what it's all about. 69.99 for all the youtube and engadget, and flickr i can get? yee haw, give it to me baby uh huh uh huh..give it to me baby...uh huh uh huh
I still haven't seen much in the way of affirmation on this:
Basically, Sold our 2 iPhones 2 weeks ago to cover the cost of the 3G. The iPhone data plan is still active on the account.
Only one of our lines is available for an upgrade. Will I be able to get the subsidized pricing on both of them?
Any assistance is mucho appreciated guys.
$160/month for my wife and I to get 700 minutes of talk time to other networks, and unlimited everything else?! WIN.
We currently pay ~$190/month for much the same thing.
Why is texting not included in the plan and is an extra charge ? I mean you get unlimited data ? does it really cost that much to send some text around to different phones ? its not that much data at al per text... Humm, actually if it supposed email or an IM client i think we should get rid of the whole "texting" thing and just use IM for all of that.
I just checked if I'm eligible to transfer my number to AT&T when I buy this thing. They say no. I have a minneapolis number, but my primary usage will be in NY. Can I lie to them and say I'll use it primarily in mpls? Even though I have a NY address? I don't want a new number! (out of control sobbing)
Sounds like getting a second hand iPhone (even on crappy EDGE) and plopping in a SIM with a $20 MEdiaMax plan is better than this shit.
I bet the glut of second hand iPhones will make one attainable at about $200.....no contracts, no data plan BS.
all a bunch of winers
So for people who have the 1st gen iphone, can they still upgrade at the discounted price of $199 & $299? Since the 1st gen iphone was unsubsidized I'm guessing they didn't need to sign a 2 year contract thus they would be eligible for the lower pricing right?
This pricing plan does not make sense without more details-
For my current iPhone I'm paying $10 to be on my family plan, and $20 for unlimited data/300 sms. Is the new plan going to cost me $15 more because of the extra charge for SMS and the $10 more unlimited data plan? or is it going to cost me $55 more? While I wouldn't be "happy" I think I could handle $15 but $55 more per month would be absurd.
Ok, but this still means I can go to an Apple store and buy one, and then activate it later right? I know that was posted awhile ago on engadget and giz, but have not seen any follow ups.
450 min = $69.99, 900 min = $89.99, 1350 min = $109.99, unlimited = $129.99
200 txt msgs = $5, 1500 txt msgs = $15, unlimited txt msgs = $20
Wow, what a rip-off.
Seriously, that is a COLOSSAL rip-off, one of monolithic proportions at that.
So, in other words, for a service that's not even up to par with my SERO plans offerings either in features or coverage with respect to high-speed data network, I would have to pay:
$109 for the 1350 mins
Then $20 for unlimited txt msgs
Then additional fees where applicable for other niceties (such as N/W starting at 7, free M2M, free Roaming)
In all, I would be paying roughly $100/month MORE for ATT service than what I am currently paying for on Sprint via SERO.
You guys are getting royally screwed...
So,
there isn't any roaming charges for ATT
So you are paying $30 for unlimited sms and 1350 unlimited minutes? Doubt it...
why don't you do some research before you post this inaccurate propaganda. look ,i don't think the unlimited data should be going up either, but it has for every other smart phone. why in the hell would the iPhone be left out? and taking the the 200 sms away is total bullshit.
lets get a few things straight though:
450 nationwide / unlimited data for 69.99/mo
-unlimited m2m
-no roaming
-rollover [i have almost 1800, i'll never get charged voice overage at this rate]
-3g data that is constantly being improved [and possibly WiFi hotspot access]
???
Matt:
Here is what I get
Unlimited Data (EVDO Rev A, which is much more expansive than ATT's network)
Unlimited M2M
Unlimited Messaging (SMS as well)
Unlimited N/W starting at 7PM
Unlimited Roaming
1250 anytime minutes (as opposed to 1350)
All for $49 a month.
A comparable plan on ATT would be about $100 more.
$109 + $20 + the additional tax at the higher price = well, ok $90 more
But tell me, can I get N/W starting at 7 PM on ATT?
How about Free M2M?
Aren't those both additional fees.
No matter how you slice it, you guys are getting screwed BIG TIME.
Yes, a comparable
All of this info is available on the att website, just go there. It has info for new owners, current owners, an faq. even a pdf checklist to get "iReady!"
Is it me or am I the only enjoying clicking refresh just to see all the smart comments coming from this post!?
so what if i had an iphone and sold it do i still get a new one for the discount?
The problem starts when you need to make the monthly payment. A family plan for two comes out to $82 a month with text. If you add the data plan, that is an extra $30. So that comes to $112, but then you have to add in the extra tax, that brings it up to well over $125, which isn't a good thing at all.
I also forgot to add that the website has another pdf with instructions on how to pass your old iPhone over to another owner/buyer to activate.
I'd rather just by the contract-free version at an apple store.
This is tough for me.
Currently I pay ~$75 including taxes to Verizon for 2 lines, 500 minutes, and 250 text messages per line. We have a slight corporate discount via my work.
My wife and I want to upgrade to an iPhone 3G when our Verizon contract ends. Doing some quick math, picking the cheapest family talk plan and 200 text messages apiece results in ~$140 plus taxes. So my phone plan cost would basically double if my wife and I were to get an iPhone.
Is it worth it? Going for the iPhone over my current phone means I would get internet, visual voicemail, not have to carry an ipod around anymore, and the ability to organize everything (calendar, to-dos with a 3rd party app, etc.) much easier.
But $70 extra per month easier? At least I have until December (when the Verizon contract ends) to decide. The rate gas prices are climbing, I don't know if I can justify it.
We are in the exact same boat and I just looked at the current family plans. One advantage I saw with ATT is you get rollover minutes but if you add in the data plans to a standard family plan, the iPhone plans are really not that much different so I don't see why so many people are having such a cow. You just have to decide if $70/month is worth unlimited data and rollover minutes. I think we are jumping.
Good point...if Apple wants market place dominance then they will have to figure out how to make this all work simple and cheap for everyone. Otherwise they will be in the same position next year. Gas prices are going to keep a lot of people from not getting the 3G iPhone. Really only us tech geeks are going to get it and after that trickles off what is Apple left to do to keep sales going?
Apple it's time to say Bye Bye to AT&T.
So... just to clarify:
I'm paying $39.99 for 450 mins right now.
I'm also paying $40.00 for unlimited data + unlimited texts ($20 each, I do believe).
That totals $79.99.
In the pricing listed in this article, $69.99 includes the unlimited data charge. So compared to what I'm paying now, that would be $49.99 for the mins, and $20.00 for the data (or however it splits up). Adding $20.00 for the text messaging, that's a total of $89.99.
So it's just $10 more per month, right? o_o
Right
Right. But don't tell any one or they will have nothing to complain about. It's more fun here to listen to the complaints of the morons who can read, but can comprehend!
so if i bought an iphone, and got rid of it last week and am using a blackjack, will i be eligible for the $199/$299 price...or did i screw myself by selling my iphone for the new one?
Let's see... With T-Mobile I've got 1000 minutes on a family plan... 4 lines, unlimited data on every line, unlimited text messaging on every line... and that comes to about $124 per month (before taxes).
Closest AT&T family plan: 700 minutes (300 less), add additional lines, add text messaging, and we're at $280 per month. Or with the 1400 minute plan... $300 per month.
So, more than double for the privilege of using AT&T with its considerably worse coverage in my area... somebody please tell me why anyone would pick this?
Even AT&T's individual plan with less minutes costs more than my family plan with two lines. Gotta love it.... "We're AT&T... we have the same name as a big telco, so we're gonna screw you!"
Oh, and if it's true that you have to pay another $15/line for Exchange synchronization, throw another $60/month on those AT&T rates... because I'm doing that now with my T-Mo plan. So $340 vs $124 per month. Not exactly enticing me to switch, guys.
Yes, your AT&T prices are right if every line of your family talk were to have an iPhone with unlimited data on each one and unlimited text. But would all of your lines have an iPhone??? If they wouldn't it would only be $10 per additional line. And why are you so concerned if AT&T doesn't even have very good coverage in your area?
Doug
Only people with more cash than brain cells would make the switch given your situation.
You're wise to stick with what you got, no point in senselessly throwing away money for an inferior service and features, yet 2-3 times the cost in your case.
Nobody's mentioning if the GPS is included in the data package. How much extra is that? When I called before, they said it was an additional 9.99 - anybody heard anything?
It won't cost anything, its going to use google maps like it did before which was just an app, now it uses GPS.
I was really excited about the new 3G iPhone, probably like everyone else. But with the prices like they are on the monthly fees + taxes, I am leaning toward not getting one.
Currently, my wife and I both have iPhones, ~1350 minutes, nights start at 7, and we are paying more than 150 a month. My wife came over from Verizon and all of her family and friends are on Verizon. We text about 100 times a month, so the plan is OK for us. But the 150 is way more than I want to pay for a phone bill. It stung when I originally signed up for it. We both love our iPhones, so we grin and bear the bill we see each month.
Now, I was all about getting a new one. But I don't want to be paying another $30 plus for 2 new iPhones and data plans. This would push us close to over $200 a month! Absurd!
I know the argument is "well, this is the same as other 3G network plans" I think what people don't understand, up until the iPhone, business users were the main users of the 3G stuff. Their companies footed the bill. Now, the iPhone brings 3G to the mainstream, and people just are comfortable paying that much for a phone + internet device! I have a really hard time paying more for my phone data plans than I do for broadband at my house.
I'm sure Apple will sell a ton of these to the die hards, but I wonder if they will sell as many as they want to with these high priced plans.
my account wasnt eligible for upgrade until november this year and my wifes july of next year..... i just off the phone with a cs rep and he said we were both eligible for the 199/299 prices. either he is misinformed or something isnt making much sense.
Well i would assume that what the rep is saying is true.... because looking at this pricing plan hear is quite unbelievable..im shocked
he's not informed. just a dumb rep. we know more about the pricing than they do. customers not eligible for an upgrade will pay the piper, which I won't. check out SPRINT and the INSTINCT. should have never switched from Verizon to buy this damn phone. ANDROID will make it obsolete anyway. JOBS should have never signed on with ONE mobile provider. It's highway robbery!
Coolone300... stop telling everyone they should of known that the iphone price was going to subsidized for new users and iphone users only....Jobs said 199 in the keynote...but for some reason just 11 days b4 the release..surprise..current users get screwed over..even if we are willing to extend our contract... i would have expected to only pay 199 no matter what....not to mention the 1st gen was same price for all.... AT&T is just getting screwed by apple so what do they do... they take it out on their very own customers... its a shame
I didn't say they should have known it would be subsidized, i said they should have known not to upgrade/enter into a new contract so close to the new iPhone coming out or in anticipation of it, simply because they didn't know if it would be subsidized or not. And yes he said $199 for an iPhone......WITH A 2 YEAR SERVICE AGREEMENT. Every other phone works this way. If your in the middle of your contract and a new phone comes out tomorrow, you would not be eligible to buy it at the 2 year contract price.............just like the iPhone.
Let me explain a little about subsidies. You buy a subsidized phone and sign a 2 year contact, AT&T loses money on the phone (lets say about $150 or so) and makes it back over the course of 2 years. In a years time or 6 months time you want another phone at the 2 year contact price (lets say an iPhone where AT&T loses over $200 or more), if AT&T did this for you they would lose money on the first phone and not fully make it back before losing even more money on the second phone in which you say you will fulfill another 2 year contact. You may or may not fulfill the contract because you can get out for $175 or less meaning that you just screwed AT&T over 2 times, once by not fulfilling the contract and again because they don't recoup all the money they spent subsidizing the phone.
Lets face it, AT&T and every other phone company is out to make money. Subsidizing phones is a way to get people to sign up for service by offering them a cheaper phone upfront and losing money, but making up the cost over the long run (even video game systems do this) by keeping you paying for the service. The real point here is how so many people don't understand how the system works. Its been in place for many years and most people use it and bitch about it but don't fully understand it. The iPhone is now a part of that system just like every other phone, but people think that somehow things are that drastically different. People write on here about how they are getting screwed over by getting a phone a few months ago (in which AT&T lost money on) and now they want a new iPhone and AT&T won't give it to them for the cheap price (so AT&T loses hundreds more). The loss of money and revenue generated wouldn't equal out or make sense. People need to be more responsible for their decisions and stop bitching about it. Just because i'm pointing out that fact doesn't make me or AT&T the bad guy.
Half of you people wouldn't say a word about buying a PDA/Smartphone on Verizon and paying $30 a month for unlimited data, but oh no, not for the iPhone.
My Pocket PC only costs $49 a month for everything that ATT is charging customers $130 a month, including Unlimited Data.
I just ordered a $30 / month SERO line for my mom recently as well, and her plan will feature:
Unlimited Data, Unlimited M2M, Unlimited Roaming, Unlimited Messaging, Unlimited N/W starting at 7 PM, with 500 anytime minutes to boot.
That is 1/3 the cost of ATT's offering with the iPhone.
If you shop around senselessly, then you deserve what you get.
If however, you take the time to research your options, then you can save an arm and a leg which is what absurd plans a la ATT will cost suckers....err customers.
