More Xbox price cut rumors swirl

The chatter surrounding a possible Xbox 360 price cut got a little louder today, as several news outlets have picked up on an anonymously-sourced Hollywood Reporter piece claiming that Redmond will drop the 360 Pro's price to $299 sometime before E3. That jives with all those leaked ads that hinted at a July 6th date, so we'll see soon enough -- and we'll bet you that extra $50 the $279 360 Arcade sees some price cut love as well.

Already own the Wii, PSP, DS and a PS2, I'll be getting a PS3 next. I've never really enjoyed any of the games I've played on the Xbox, but that simply means it's not for me. (shrugs) I also don't need to be playing online and listen to a buch of 14 year old boys being racist, homophobic, and sexist while I'm trying to enjoy a game.

That or the die shrink is ahead of schedule and they have cut a bit more off production costs with the rework of the board to all 65nm.

I would say both, an initial price cut will move out all the old stock, while the new lower price will be a result of lower production costs.

They need to, i mean ps3 is picking up serious momentum and rightfully so. MGS 4, uncharted, little big planet, resistance 2 and many more, not to mention blu ray winning out. I dont see any titles for 360 that even interest me this year as much as the ps3 stuff.

Anyone noticed that X360 (19 Million units) sales are teetering off to Xbox (24 Million units) levels. Does anyone here think they will really sell anymore of these than orignal Xbox's and gain any new marketshare?

The thing with the Xbox is that even if they drop the price, they're not going to bring in new demographics like the Wii. The Wii is simpler to use and has a different set of games appealing to audiences across the whole age range.
I'm not saying to Xbox is complicated, but give your grandparents or even parents a Wiimote and a 360controller and see which they figure out how to use first.
When the 360 came out nobody was rushing to show relatives and visitors from out of town the Xbox360 like they were with the Wii.

I agree but that was intentional. Microsoft's market and Nintendo's market were very different. It wasn't until the Wii became a runaway success that Microsoft decided it should try to enter that market established by the Wii. This is the very reason we hear rumblings of a motion controller, lips, and a Xvatars (360 avatars) now. Microsoft wants to shift its focus to grab as many gamers as possible. If this generation has a long enough tail, 2013/2014, I forsee the 360 selling approximately million systems this generation. Not bad considering that marketshare dispersion will be much closer than last generation. 40/30/30 - Wii/360/PS3 respectively.

The thing with Wii is that most of the games aren't half as good as half of the 360 games.

I have both, yet I haven't played my Wii since the day Brawl came out. As a 'hardcore' gamer, I much prefer my 360.

I don't think the Xbox needs to bring in any new demographics. It's fine with the audience it's aimed at as it is. A lower price point will put not-so-hardcore gamers (softcore gamers?) in a better position to buy a 360.
