Samsung brings mobile charging stations to MSP airport
Not that charging stations are a total rarity at airports, but Samsung is giving a nod to the little guy by adding a new fleet of 'em at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. Unlike some alternatives, Sammy's stations deliver juice to cellphones, laptops and all manners of other gadgets gratis, which -- let's be honest -- is exactly how it should be. 22 new stations will be installed at MSP and ready for use prior to July 4th, so feel free to drain your lappie right on down prior to landing / connecting in the great state of Minnesota.

They are also at Orlando, FL Airport as well.
Travis (stupid blog free) @ Jul 1st 2008 1:59PM
The one I tried at MCO a few weeks ago didn't work. Had no power at all. May have been due to the fact that the terminal was undergoing renovation.
My favorite is the free wired internets station at DFW gate A20. Power, mini-desk & seat included. It's hardly ever busy, either. I guess most people assume it costs money like the stupid Samsung mobile travel lounges scattered around the terminals.
engadgetier @ Jul 1st 2008 3:30PM
ive seen them there, ive just never used them......
Mitch R. @ Jul 1st 2008 10:22AM
When was it decided that it is ok to talk like this? I don't know if it's just me, but whenever I see someone posting like a 12 year old girl text messaging, I assume that's what you are. A 12 year old girl.
Matronix @ Jul 1st 2008 10:26AM
Awesome!
I'm driving down to the Airport right now... MSP Rocks! :) Oh... I need to charge my iPhone.
cory107 @ Jul 1st 2008 10:30AM
This is exciting since I am a fellow Minesotan. But I know my parents travel a whole lot so this will be a god send for them and their samsung portables.
Dolemite @ Jul 1st 2008 10:41AM
So charging battries is considered "exciting" in Minnesota. I wish I could laugh at that, but that is just so sad.
Mikey @ Jul 1st 2008 11:21AM
Dolemite = Douchebag... what a sad little existence you must have
Christian @ Jul 1st 2008 2:49PM
@Dolemite.
No... portable charging is exciting for regular travelers, techies, and especially tech geeks that fly a lot.
We're on a site that talks almost exclusively about computers and gadgets... and you act surprised when a few people here get excited about something new and tech related.
I think the issue isn't with Minnesota, it's with the general purpose of this site and the demographic it panders to.
I am from Minnesota, more specifically the Minneapolis/St. Paul metro area... I ride the light rail under MSP nearly every day... I'm not about to run up to the terminal and check them out... why? Because I have other better things to do.
I like how you decide to criticize an entire state for false perceptions of boringness, simply because a few individuals expressed they wanted to check out something new and tech related... on a tech related site... and not just some tech related website, one that you spend a considerable amount of time on yourself making posts about tech related news... talk about pathetic, I'd laugh at you, but your really just so sad. Talk about the kettle calling the pot black.
EricR @ Jul 1st 2008 10:35AM
According to Samsung's press release they will support "other electronic devices... as well.”

Connor Milligan @ Jul 1st 2008 10:37AM
why don't any of these things come to where i live
DefPo3t @ Jul 1st 2008 10:38AM
that's not 1337. What you type is retarded
Greg @ Jul 1st 2008 10:38AM
They are also in JFK.
Bratan @ Jul 1st 2008 12:20PM
Yes and I found them very useful at JFK, when my plane broke down and I had to wait 6 hours for next one... But that thing doesn't have enough outlets, I was literally waiting in line to plug in my laptop...
Danakin @ Jul 1st 2008 10:38AM
Aweosme...1 airport is slightly better equipped...what about the other 20,000?
lawyer bird @ Jul 1st 2008 5:31PM
20,000? more like, 20 major airports that most people fly through
Connor Milligan @ Jul 1st 2008 10:38AM
No one will use this
lol @ Jul 1st 2008 11:02AM
It's useful. Of course, if you're a person who somehow thinks that an outlet can discriminate by brand, then maybe this isn't good for you.
Samsung wins, you win. They have these out at JFK, and I actually had to use one in LAX when my curve was dying. Very useful. You get to charge in a pinch, Sammy gets product placement (every station has some samsung device on display)
Also, people should know that some Samsung products are NOT supported. For instance, I couldn't charge my P2, because it only has a USB charger.
Gman @ Jul 1st 2008 3:48PM
Of course people will use these. It's not just for Samsung products--these stations just have a bunch of outlets. I went through LAX recently, another airport that has these, and the ones that I saw were completely full of traveler's plugged-in devices.
martin @ Jul 1st 2008 10:39AM
i just use the outlets coming out of the floor already.. shame theres no chairs near this new things, seem like youll have to stand about for a while
TE @ Jul 1st 2008 10:41AM
Umm... Like a previous poster mentioned, these are at the Orlando International Airport as well... and have been for a while
EricR @ Jul 1st 2008 10:41AM
I have known a few 1337 h@x0rz and I never met one that talked intentionally like a 12 year old girl.
Technex @ Jul 1st 2008 10:45AM
Whereas I agree with you about Apple sucking you are still the scum of the internet. Please die.
kjb434 @ Jul 1st 2008 10:45AM
Typing like that is fine for a text message since your are limited to 160 characters per message and this speak developed from that necessity.
Typing like that on a blog comment is utter annoyance. You may not actually be a 12 year old girl, but your typing suggests otherwise.
There isn't an unusually low limit on comment length on this blog. Your "leet speak" is not needed and is an abomination of the English language.
Geqxon @ Jul 1st 2008 10:46AM
Stupid design. How the heck am I going to fit my microwave oven on that small table?
Daza @ Jul 1st 2008 11:02AM
Get about 20 phones in a small area like that and you may just have a do-it-yourself microwave oven.

kjb434 @ Jul 1st 2008 10:48AM
The only thing new about this is that it's free. All large airports have them. Samsung is assuming the advertising is worth the cost of making it free.
If i truly need to charge, i take my charger out of my carry on and plug into an available outlet since you are going to wait at an airport anyway.
computer.dude.28 @ Jul 1st 2008 10:53AM

Ken @ Jul 1st 2008 10:54AM
Stupid industrial designers... What idiot put that blue, back-lit symbol on the top? I hope that idiot realizes that it is a standby symbol and not a power source symbol. Great way to dumb down people. Now laypeople will start associating universal symbols with the wrong meanings. There's already a misunderstanding between standby and power. Now people won't be able to distinguish power, standby, and power source (3 separate symbols).
lol @ Jul 1st 2008 11:11AM
ok, you're gonna have to explain this one to me, because that looks like the standard "1 overlapping 0" symbol that I'm used to seeing. Maybe I'm missing something
Daza @ Jul 1st 2008 11:01AM
Does anyone else find that it takes longer to type like a retard than it does to type properly? Even when texting I can punch out a message fairly quick using T9 and spelling everything properly, but I'll be damned if I'm going to supplement 'you' with 'u', like with 'lyk' etc. I even put apostrophes in my texts... maybe that is a bit unnecessary.
Scott @ Jul 1st 2008 11:09AM
Old news for LAX, they have the same ones. But, I'm glad this is a growing trend.
Yevon @ Jul 1st 2008 11:12AM
Hey, that's where I live! Finally, we have something more interesting than cows, a mall, and really fast internet!
computer.dude.28 @ Jul 1st 2008 11:15AM
i suk =(

I thought they removed/banned all the outlets, cause terrorists might use them to charge their bombs? :)

--Ed @ Jul 1st 2008 11:19AM
Old news well maybe not for MN. We have had these in Orlando for about a year now.
Matt @ Jul 1st 2008 11:37AM
I don't understand these. Don't these devices take too long to charge? Even if you just go to 70% charge, wouldn't that still be 30-60 minutes?
XenoX101 @ Jul 1st 2008 1:12PM
Yep, with no chairs to sit on.
Oh and that caffeteria looks to be just outside the "Nobody would steal my laptop when I'm this close" border.
Also by the looks of it there is room for four people to charge at once. I can't imagine 4 laptops fitting comfortably on that table.
Cool idea, yes. Good execution, no.
But we'll see for sure when it gets released.
ClickGuy @ Jul 1st 2008 12:14PM
They're also in LAX - at least in the Southwest terminal (Terminal 1). There were about a dozen or so - and were well-used by folks.
akap @ Jul 1st 2008 12:43PM
Saw these a few months ago while waiting at LAX. They all were pretty crowded from what I saw.
Aguiluz @ Jul 1st 2008 1:12PM
I wish it was more like "pit stops" where you charge for 15 seconds and it's full.
Maybe when batteries improve...
Aguiluz @ Jul 1st 2008 1:14PM
I'm going to take an aspirin now....
Welcome to engadget for the both of you. :)
Sarah @ Jul 1st 2008 1:31PM
I'm glad you like my picture. It was taken at LAX…
Chris @ Jul 1st 2008 2:38PM
I saw them at Logan last week.
