Casio touts "Blanview" transmissive LCD for outdoor use

Casio sure seems to be confident in its new transmissive LCD panel, so confident that it apparently thinks it can make it with a name like "Blanview." The big innovation here, Casio says, is that it's managed to develop a new system that pulls outside light into the LCD panel to make the transmissive LCD usable outdoors without backlighting, eliminating the need for so-called "semi-transmissive" LCD panels that are more commonly used today. What's more, it says this new method also increases the transmittance of the panel by about 30% and cut its power consumption for outdoor use by upwards of 50% compared to current panels. Unlike some other promised LCD technology, it also seems like this one is actually fast approaching commercializtion, with sample panels ranging in size from 2.7- to 6.5-inches set to begin shipping this month.

Color e-books, anyone?

Impressive... now lets wait 4 years for this to be implemented. Seems like every single new tech is going to be released in 2012 nowadays. By my count the world is either supposed to end by then or we are all going to be slaves to a few elite.
tha-don @ Jul 2nd 2008 4:19PM
why not be one of the elite instead?

Wow...
"Blanview"
WORST. NAME. EVAR.
It sounds like bland or blank, neither of which are positive for a display, and has no other meaning i can think of.... Who the hell thought that was a good idea? I KNOW someone will realize it and change the name, but seriously, why give it that name, ever? Whoever thought of that was seriously not thinking...

One made up word for ya... iPhone. That damn screen rules indoors or out more then any other device i've ever owned. I'm sure this screen is much more vibrant, but seriously, it can't be that much more.
gad get @ Jul 2nd 2008 7:04PM
Why?! WHY?! Why does the iPhone have to come into this? Gee, you think people are a little obsessed? You think there aren't better screens out there? From what I hear, the Blackberry Bold has a superior screen in just about every way except sheer size.
Ten @ Jul 2nd 2008 8:05PM
i agree with you gad get.
Im a fan of the iphone, already registered down here in Aus to get one on the first day, but seriously, there is no reason for it to be making its way into EVERY single article; i mean this obsession is bordering on insansity. Give it a rest people, theres still 8 days to go

Bad name.
Plus it makes everything look Japanese. I don't read Japanese (yet), but I know that would make it difficult to accomplish many tasks.
Imagine using it in a GPS. All the street names would be in Japanese. It would work okay if you were on Rodeo Drive. I know that Rodeo is not Japanese, but it sounds like it is.
So this is not a good product.
(...sits and waits for it...)

thedesolate1 @ Jul 2nd 2008 4:28PM

rrothberg @ Jul 2nd 2008 4:04PM
how's this thing work in the dark??
Blake @ Jul 2nd 2008 8:14PM
Heck yeah--Casio makes awesome watches. Ever heard of G-SHOCK? I want to see one of these displays on a sweet new G-SHOCK.
Peter F @ Jul 3rd 2008 9:07AM
Might be worth clarifying that these panels DO have backlighting.

Excellent. Put one in the DS and PSP, for starters. Kids and kids-at-heart need sunlight, after all.
dandin1 @ Jul 3rd 2008 11:12AM
I once thought of having an outdoor lan party. Failed at conception, I tried it out by myself and it was impossible to see anything on the screen! This would actually solve the problem, and not just in weird cases like mine, but also for laptops. As long as "Transmissive" doesn't mean it can only be used in the sun.
And er... that comment about the screen "making everything japanese", erm... you're being sarcastic, right? It's hard to smell weed, see facial expression, or judge stupidity on the internet. ;)
