Sony pulls 2.40 firmware update after reports of bricked PS3s

Sony has pulled the 2.40 firmware update from both its in-console update and website after some users reported that the firmware has bricked their system. SCEA PR director Patrick Seybold told Joystiq that Sony is "looking into it right now and will work with those customers directly to address any issues they may be experiencing." I have been running it all day and it seems to be doing fine :) Ive stressed it pretty hard as well playing music in game and such...

I think if it bricked it it would happen during the update, not just using it after the update.

It actually scared me a bit. Right after it finished downloading, before installing it, the screen went black and the controllers turned off. I couldn't shut down the system by touching the power "button". Fortunately I flipped the power cut-off switch off and on in back and that worked. Then it booted up and installed the firmware. Played around with it a bit and saw no problems though.

I wonder if that's all that happened with these reports? Some users are pretty stupid when it comes to technology and may not even know there's a power switch in back.

No it has not. I have the 40GB versjon, and I updated my firmware first thing this morning. Since that I have played both GTA IV, Battlefield Bad Company Demo, and watched 3 episodes of Dawsons Creek.

Dont send your console in!! I sent this to engadget along with the firmware being pulled like 2 hours ago.


FIX FOR BRICKED 2.40 SYSTEMS!!

Take out your hard drive and put in a new one, or reformat your current one on a pc, or working ps3. THIS WILL FIX YOUR PROBLEMS!
