Sony pulls 2.40 firmware update after reports of bricked PS3s
Sony has pulled the 2.40 firmware update from both its in-console update and website after some users reported that the firmware has bricked their system. SCEA PR director Patrick Seybold told Joystiq that Sony is "looking into it right now and will work with those customers directly to address any issues they may be experiencing." Has it bricked your system? Let us know in the comments below.

Updated my 60gig last night and have not had any problems since.
Bricked is such an exaggeration.
Mine's working fine, and so all of my friends that has a PS3.
Hmmn..
@dweechin:
I noticed you mentioned one game.
One.
No problems here, works great!
I installed 2.40 yesterday morning, and it was working fine until about 2 hours ago. Turned it on, took 5 minutes for my wallpaper to come up and the XMB didn't show. I turned it off, and when turned on again it restored the hard drive, and reset. Then restored the hard drive, and reset.....and so on. Sony say they will replace the console with a reconditioned one in about a week. I'm upset :(
it's probably only the 60GB models again(like GTA IV issue....) *sigh*
Probably people who have automatic login turned on and the update autodownloaded. The server was so overloaded that a few parts of the download could have been corrupted. When the system reset the proper files weren't there and the system failed.
I didn't have any problems. With the coming price drop of the 360 and continued RRoD problems, this could be a bunch of people calling Sony saying thier PS3 was bricked by the update just to get them to take it down before E3.
I really really don't put anything past Microsoft's propoganda department. I'm sure thay study Nazi and Communist propoganda tactics all the time to use.
My froze up while playing Bad Company. What do I do?
I happen to own 3 PS3's. I updated my 60gb and both 40gb units to 2.40 without incident when I saw the original notice here. I pinged my son and my brother to do the same with theirs. None bricked yet; All of them presently folding proteins happily...
Does anyone know of any solutions for the IR2BT problem? Is this something that can even be fixed or are all those who purchased it just screwed?
Mine updated fine, but all that I've done is play MGS4
I've got a 60GB PS3 (Spanish) I was fiddling with the remote play thing and my PSP and now it turns on but I get a black screen. I did update to 2.40. *yay*
My PS3 is suffereing from the new update. The internet is much much slower and it shutsdown slower than usual, it takes forever to enter the Playstation store( it just shows the background for like 5 minutes before loading) and my mic isn't working right.
I got 2.40, Working like a Beast. No problems at all same as all the rest of the updates.
everything seems to be fine, apart from Bluetooth management still not working whilst playing cod4.
Well I have the 80 GB and my brother updated it to 2.4 as soon as it came out and so far no problems... we've played several games, movies and used the browser with no ill effects. After reading a lot of these posts it seems like the most affected console is the 60 GB... As far as the in-game music goes i've only tried it on GTA 4 and thats a definite no go... anyone notice any games it DOES work on?
With firmware 2.35 i used to get error code 80010514 when playing blu-ray games and movies. I could play DVD's and PS2 titles with no problem. After installing 2.40 no discs work at all, not even a regular audio CD. No longer get error codes either just the disc loading indicator.
I call BS on all of the people with "bricked" PS3s. I downloaded the update from another after it was pulled and installed via usb. It was successful in a matter of minutes. Those with problems either did incorrectly (I never update via the PS3 wifi connection anymore), or somehow screwed it up.
My wife thought I was crazy for doing the update when I told her of all of the "problems" with the update. I just laughed and did the update. Works great.
I dont know what bricking means but i know i still have the 2.36 version and the stupid thing wont read my games or movies any more, I can play demos i had downloaded but other then that nothing works. Any ideas?
The 2.40 installed weirdly. Like others reported I had to remove the power and then reboot. It's had some issues with wifi since then, but otherwise is OK.
Still running 2.0 over here...
for the record, my 250gb ps3 had no problems.
COD4 isnt compatible with music playing functions.
but am stil sat downlaodin this fukin 2.41 update.
My PS3 keeps crashing eveytime I start condemned 2, the auto update fails and the game freezes and the system restarts itself. I just downloaded 2.41 and it still does it. Plus for armored core 4 it won't download the new regulation file ever, so Iam stuck at 1.00 and can't play online at all. SONY's foul ups are unexceptable and I have no problems with any other online games like Metal Gear Online. Any insight would be greatly appreciated, thank you.
Mine got a little screwed. It still plays and everything but I can no longer access the internet from my PS3. (yes my internet works otherwise I wouldn't be typing this, I'm not that idiotic) I received an error code of 8071040C and it wouldn't even allow me to sign in. Some research I did found that others were having the problem but no one really knew what it meant.
mine had updated just fine. Though the game I play most... Call of Duty 4, doesn't allow gameplay in game. I dont know if thats because of the update, or if its just the game itself that doesn't allow it... i myself would prefer to listen to some decent music while im killing people in a deathmatch...
I am currently on my 4th PS3 in the last 2 months. First, my original got bricked. I paid to have it repaired (too damn much for something that was not in my control anyway). Since then, I have had to return three (refurb) PS3's that have bricked after updating and re-downloading everything. For all my trouble, and cash, Sony only offers me a free game. I lost all game saves, missed all the betas I paid for thru subscriptions, and I had to pay money for the whole experience. I am buying a X-box soon.
