Hitachi working on 5TB hard drive, halfway to human brain capacity
Just when solid-state drives were about to catch up to the spinners, Hitachi has gone and announced that it is working on a 5TB hard drive. It says the drive should be available by 2010 in a 3.5-inch format and will use perpendicular CPP-GMR tech to achieve some serious density. Just to show off, Hitachi's Yoshiro Shiroishi pointed out that the human brain has been estimated at (only?) around 10TB. So there we have it -- we're halfway to intellectual obsolescence. Don't say we didn't warn you![Via TechDigest]

I guess people with ADHD have low Vram then....
It's very difficult, if not impossible, to compare human brains to computers. In fact, from what I've learned, a human brain is more like the internet. Operations are nearly always distributed, and when new information is learned, new branches grow to store it. Essentially, this allows the kind of information a brain stores to be virtually unlimited. The key here, however, is that it stores different kinds of information than a computer. Bits and pieces as opposed to carbon copies.
Also, it is possible for you brain to run at 100% of capacity. It's called having a seizure. Trust me, you wouldn't like it. I don't really view it as a limitation. I see it as a characteristic.
We have 135 tb of storage space in one xSan where I work, and I'm pretty familiar with the video footage stored in there. Not all, but most of it. Now if you add in 40 something years of life-experience memories, various languages, songs, smells, touches, etc etc....I'm thinking we're into a few hundred or thousand petabytes
I think the human brain is much more complex than just storage. We have the processing capability greater than the all of the worlds computers combined. I want you to tell me one computer that can create independently or dream. I think we store all information in almost a plain text format and the tremendous processing power of our brain can generate images just by analyzing the "text" stored there. Think about that the next time you read a novel and you get a picture in your mind of what you are reading. Modern graphics engines can't translate text into images they need textures and the like. We have the ability to take small amounts of information and process it at much higher levels than a computer. A computer needs large amounts of data to process a single image.
We may only have 10 TB of storage, but we also have an awesome filesystem that is very very efficient!
I wonder how many GBs of memory an orgasm takes up.
Something tells me our brain is not running windows, more like a bullet proof version of Linux. That be really bad, if our brain was running Windows OS and we get bluescreen time to time.
this is ridiculous!
how could anyone possibly compare the mind to a computer?
how could you even measure out how much thought a human has, and translate it into TBs?
the depth of human thought alone proves how false this statement is.
we do not simply think
"oh, that pie i ate was good."
along with the thought we recall taste, smell, and so on.
you cannot simply say "this thought = 1 TB of memory space."
I do belive that we have not unlocked as much of the brain as we have potential to, but it is ludicrous to say that the human brain is only capable of 10TB.
this statement is crap.
@ Blue Koshie
so I'd bet demons are like blackhats... if you've got a demonic possession, calling a priest is about as useful as calling geeksquad or AT&T Tech support because OMFG HAXXORS gots mah root, etc etc coco puffs??
Re:nekkidbertha
So next time my wife gets mad at me for forgetting parts of our romantic past, I can admit: "My memories were hacked and my precious moments file was replaced with porn!"
If you are reading this comment u probibly have no life since its like the 5 thousand comment, but i want to plug hardrives into my brain. Then i can actually store movies in my head. !!! no more wasting time loading that computer.
