So... it's slimmer than the current slim ps2? Wonder what it looks like...
I'm wondering the same thing... slimmer than the PStwo we have in the US?
It was launched in Japan late last year, the model number series is SCPH-90000 vs SCPH-70000 in the first slim PS2s.
I think these new ones are the same in thickness but the power supply is now built into the console, which is pretty damn amazing. How far its come from the original fat PS2 eight years ago.

Won't the PS2 just DIE already? Hello, Sony? 2000 called, they want their technology and their console back, please.
Why kill something that is still making money. My 5yr old Nephew is more then content playing on a PS2. Also with the boat load of used games out their at your local Game Stop it makes cheap entertainment.
Not every family needs the latest and greatest or is willing to spend well north of $500 for a console and a few games. For less then $250 you can get a PS2 and a dozen used games.
Well eventually they are gonna have to stop selling it to really push the sales of the ps3.
Of course it would be a lot easier to do that if they brought back the 60 gig version.
PStwo won't die b/c it won't RRoD on you. Why discontinue a solid console?
The PS1 was in production for 11 years, so there's probably another couple years left in the PS2.
They need to keep it alive to help cover the mounting PS3 losses.

You don't get it do you? PS2 will continue whilst two things are true:
1/ it's making money
2/ PS3 is selling for less than it costs to make.
The PS2 is financing the PS3, I bet Microsoft are dead jealous of that fact... Once the PS3 production comes down further, and it's time to crank out the PS3 for $299, with priduction costs less than that, then it's time for Sony to switch focus to PS3...
In 8 years time, the PS3 will still be selling, just like the PS2 and PS1 before it. It's not a Microsoft 4yrs and dump it plan you know....

Im sure not EVERY euro country will be selling the new ps2 model.
So they've had this model out for months in Japan already...why don't they release it everywhere?

japan always gets stuff before us. its because big technology companies are based in japan (exception microsoft and apple).

I think westerners really need to change their view of India. India is no longer the land of the suffering poor masses. Truth is that a huge number of people can easily afford the PS2 and even the PS3 but the problem is with their mentality. Families here have a pretty different system of values not every one considers a gaming console worth buying (i am not included in those ;) )
Its just that i get frustrated by the same old poor image of India.
Well, it is just that the vast majority are below the poverty line.
Numbers dont lie, and reports from 2007 indicate that india has more miniaturist kids than any country. i believe it was more than 50%. that is in comparison with africa (which is considered to be the biggest region stereotypically)!
now saying that some of them can afford ps2's is true. In any country someone can afford a ps2. however, it is vastly different from America where probably near everybody can afford a ps2.
india is still considered a developing nation for very good reasons. There is something the matter when half of your children go unfed or have a poor diet.
It is good to have national pride, however you should keep in scale with other countries.
