Sony to launch slimmer PS2 in India and Russia this year
According to a report in the Economic Times, Sony will be introducing a slimmer (well, "slimer" if you want the direct quote), sleeker, and "more suave" version of the PS2 in Indian and European markets come Fall. If you believe what you read, the new system will include a built-in power supply, will make its debut by Diwali (which falls on October 28th), and will keep the current sticker price of Rs 6,990 (or about $162). The article also claims that Sony will bring its PlayStation Network to India by the end of the year, which should make a lot of competition hungry gamers very happy. Sony reps say that the move is driven by the belief that, "Console gaming is in its nascent stage in India," adding, "We have no plans to phase out PS2 anytime soon." The PS2: you just can't kill it!

Hmmm... when I visited there a couple of years ago I was left with the impression that the people were poor and the country was dirty/unsanitary. I mean, there were effin MONKEYS climbing around in the New Delhi airport.
But maybe I was in the "bad" part of India?
One thing to note about the PSTwo with the built in power supply.
Looks like it is missing the mounting holes for attaching LCD displays (if you are into that sort of thing).

On a related note. Anyone have any idea if US retailers are selling the "old" (with a power brick) or "new" (with internal power) version of the PSTwo?
I'm wondering about Amazon in particular since I ordered one from them (along with an LCD screen) a few days ago.
My earlier comment was directed to Flashpoint . forgot to mention it

I've never seen so many reiterations of the same console. When your system sucks, just give up and move on. The Gamecube did, and for the most part, it didn't even suck. What is it with Sony and their game consoles? Maybe if they focused all this time and effort into their new console, it might be worth playing.
Have you heard of the Genesis?
Right. I'm waiting for the inevitable psthree (probably) to get my playstaton 2 on.
Good luck selling any units in India of all places until a modchip comes out that supports the "slimmer" one.
When i have to mentally work our to figure out what the heck your saying...
then yes, you are done.
Leet speak my ass.
Its just annoying.
Just leave! Please!?
Everyone report all of UltraCoolSplash whatever's comments so we can get him out of here!
jai hind! ps3 needs like a decade to get some decent titles under its belt anyway...
According to the article:
PS2:
*120-million installed base, worldwide
*3,40,000 of these being in India alone.
"Asked if this would affect the market for PS-3, Mr Bose said that would not be the case. “We do not market it as a PS-2 or PS-3. It is the experience of the PS that we market. PS-3 is for the next generation. People who are first timers in the gaming market want to pick up PS-2 and experience that, before upgrading to PS-3,” he said."

Different market, different needs. PS2 is still quite strong in developed markets too.
I'd love to see the PS3 in a slim case like the PS2. I don't regard the PS2 as pretty but it beats the pants off the glossed, chrome-accented 80s throwback PS3, aesthetically-speaking.
Perhaps in five+ years when things get smaller and more efficient we'll see the PS3 Slim. Power bricks I don't mind being separate dangling accessories. But sure, if you can integrate them, why not.
Do you have a power brick on the current PS3?
They would not dare go backwards... althought they did with the PS2 slim...
But I refuse to buy a new PS3 with a damn power brick...
Ooh, if only someone can mod this into an ultra-portable
It's called the psp,dude.

Michael Scott? You mean from The Office?
Hello Mr. Troll...
Am I the only one who prefers the fat PS2 since you can't put a HDD to the slim ones?
most definitely not. it looks better
Unless ofc you mean the 120GB HD on mine with hmmm certain software that lets me hmmmm "back-up" my games....
Then yeah i prefer that one!
yeah for all those games that need the harddrive.............
huh yeah those games.. you know
why cant sony just stop trying to make the ps2 "better" and focus more on the ps3. they need to put more effort in making the ps3 slimmer and appeal more to the mass. and bring down the price on that sucker!
To be fair, it took a longgg time for the PS2 to go slim, and they would do anything to reduce costs on their PS3 if they could. They do have more efficient chips in there, so it's a matter of time before they give the case a good trim.
Most of the time miniaturizations like this come from other research. For all you know they managed to reduce manufacturing costs by shrinking chips within the PS2 as a result of them prepping shrink hardware for the ps3.
This move is a very good idea. New generation console are very expensive. This will be just right for my nephew in India.
Are you sure they don't mean a PS2 in the shape of Slimer from Ghostbusters?
PS2 ain't going anywhere people, it'll be around for a few more years. The PS3 will, in due time, recieve price drops and upgrades. It's way too early for that at this point in time.
xbox premium indian price -> ~USD500
ps3 indian price -> ~USD600
families new to gaming STILL prefer the ps2 here, no doubt, even though a PC is the most preferred choice. but to this day, in all these years, i haven't seen a SINGLE legit console owned by any of my friend or elsewhere. EVERYONE modded it, modding costs like around $10 and fake controllers and multi-taps, etc are available. pirated game dvds r available for as low as Rs.30 (75 cents)
i got my psp modded(CFW) for $10 (back in the times of GTA:LCS modding)
and my x360 got modded for $20
Seriousy though... I think GOW2 pushes PS2 Hardware to it's absolute max... Theres no where else to go from there.
but what an epic game...
