Acer's G24 gaming monitor with world's best contrast

Clearly, Acer's G24 monitor is the only monitor capable of matching your high-performance Predator gaming rig. It's orange... or "metallic copper" if you work in Acer's arts and charts department. Bounced around trade shows for the last month, the 24-inch LCD is now officially featuring a proclaimed 50,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio which, according to a Acer, is a world's first for monitors. Now the specs: 1,920 x 1,200 resolution, 2-ms response, 400-nit brightness, and a host of Acer image tweaking and color management tech meant to brighten images and avoid ambient light reflection. Around back you'll find PC-friendly DVI and game-console/Blu-ray friendly HDMI too. Unfortunately, it's dateless and priceless just like Britney's little sister.

If ugly could kill, we'd all be dead by now.
you speak for yourself.I happen to like the design.
Perhaps the 'high contrast' refers to the difference between the bezel and the blank panel...
bring it on, going to be pricey but packin a punch still!
I think the monitor is fine but I just can NOT get behind that tower. That thing has not gotten any prettier since the last time I saw it here on Engadget. Ick.
Low ranked?! Where is the love?!
I agree, that orange color scheme is very ugly. I guess orange is the new gamer extreme color. I have nothing bad to say about their LCDs though; my parents have a 22" LCD from Acer; excellent picture quality through and through.
It's not the color that ruins it for me. I think the color is pretty cool but that damn door and hinges are just butt ass ugly.
That kind of Orange looks really nice on cars.
Epic pwnage on the last sentence.
o snap you did not just say that
agreed. that just made my day
yeah, total burn. Only problem is, as long as her MySpace and iPod work, she probably doesn't give a sh** about technology
What is with the windows 7 widget on the monitor?
ooh well spotted!
There is a Windows 7 gadget, desktop shortcut and Build String (in the bottom right corner) because In the Picture the PC is running, what looks like, Milestone 1 (Possibly 2) of Windows 7.
yeah, the monitor image came from a dubious source. Though the image of the monitor is legit, the site had photoshopped the Vista screenshot onto it. I've updated the picture and will post official Acer press shots whenever they are released.
Thomas
wtf are you talking about? the monitor is blank
Psst, d... Read the comment above yours, draw your own conclusions and then try to pretend you understood all along.
all it needs is some smoke and sound effects...and all will be forgiven =)
orange is the new brown hahaha
i love my mac pro case, but that transformers looking case is definitely FUCKING COOL!!!!!
Seems like every post, there has to be someone who inserts the gratuitous detail that he has a mbp in his comment...
@ sany
actually, it was mac pro, not a macBOOK pro
and you have to admit, the mac pro looks pretty cool.
@d
Yes, d, I made a mistake... but same difference, isn't it?
I'm still wondering what's keeping the Jawas. Are they coming out or what?
Bahahah brilliant. You sir, get a star.
I'd think opening the "pod bay doors" to load a dvd would run out of fun very quickly ..
i actually like that design and the color of the rig. and that last sentence just sealed the deal.
Britney has a little sister???
Yeah, a 17 year old (I believe) who recently gave birth to a child.
Oh.. Like that would stop me...
Good contrast, good response time, good brightness, good resolution, that can only mean one thing: poor viewing angle :/
ha ha you so ripped on the spears girls! that rocks! :)
"Unfortunately, it's dateless and priceless just like Britney's little sister."
- That is awesome.
insert standard "My eyes! The goggles, they do nothing!" comment here.
I'm glad it's metallic copper not the regular unmetalic kind
Haha, this was my first thought. I'd expect 'Metallic Copper' to be an option for a background color on a MySpace CSS generator, not the official name of the color of an entire line of Acer products.
...i almost pissed myself laughing! 50,000 dynamic contrast? don't they learn?....
and that 2 ms? grey to grey?....wheres the viewing angle????....
show me true specs and ill take it more seriously...not some marketing specs ...
and the writer...please open your eyes...this ain't hardly news ...
and i hope you had ONLY irony in your mind when you wrote...WORLDS BEST CONTRAST...
ITS HALF LIFES OFFICIAL PC :O
Lol, in all honesty, it looks like something that should be in the next transformers. Computron!
All that bragging about how great their monitor is... I wonder if its a TN panel.
50,000:1 contrast ratio - yeah, right.
Try this little experiment, you'll need a DSLR but I guess any self-respecting engadget reader already has half a dozen lying around. Anyway, what you do is turn on your screen with a "normal" image/game on it. With your DSLR aimed so the monitor fills the picture area, read the exposure time from your camera. Now turn the monitor off and repeat. Compare the exposure time of the picture with that of the turned-off screen image - that's your real-life contrast ratio. Most times I've done this in a normally lit room I get a contrast ratio between 50:1 and 100:1.
To get anywhere close to the ratios quoted by the manufacturers, you'd need to be in a completely darkened room, with the brightness turned up so high it'd be like staring into the sun.
Any C/R over about 200:1-300:1 is completely meaningless and is simply marketing hype.
well, not really. they measure it by having an all white screen, measured against an all black screen. so easiest thing to do is make one in Paint and full screen and stretch it.
if they have that true black or what ever tech, then the ratio drastically goes up. since if the black they produce is less luminous than the white, (it should be) the ratio goes up.
It gets worse. They are quoting "dynamic" contrast ratio. That one goes from full white with backlight at max to full black with backlight at min (probably zero). I find this to be a useless spec since it is only relevant if the device modulates the backlight while images are being displayed. The problem is that these devices do have a mode wherein they modulate the source lighting, and it is one of the most annoying gimmics I have ever seen. Once you shut this feature off you are right back to a normal contrast ratio, which is usually around 1000:1 for LCD panels.
Guys don't hate just because it doesnt have a bunch of L.E.D Gamer Haxxor lights all over it....
Holy **** that's more than my year old HDTV! And my Samsung Touch of Color monitor which still has an impressive 20,000 contrast.
Why are they selling this crap???? its called a PS3 with a HDTV that computer is just a bunch of bs
Why are they selling this crap???? its called a PS3 with a HDTV that computer is just a bunch of bs
price for the cheapest PC in NL is 1799 euros and the most expensive 3999 euros (@mediamarkt) The monitor is like round 550 euros
it kind of a Transformer design
Immature commentors are plenty here eh? =)
Here in Belgium, you can buy the PC + Display for €3000 in MedieMarkt :P xD
Acer has grown pretty nice recently with their monitor designs and specs. They cost less than most monitors, cough* my Samsung, and look just as nice to me.
I already have one on my desk for just under € 400,- It looks great. The metallic really isn't that orange and changes colour a bit with the brightmess of the light in the room. Great monitor!
Haha, it uses TN technology. Completely useless for graphical work. You would have thought they would use MVA, PVA or IPS to brag.
