Samsung i900 Omnia vs. HTC Touch Diamond... fight!
At this point, neither the HTC Touch Diamond nor the Samsung i900 Omnia need any introduction, but we're happy to announce that these two have stepped into the squared circle and faced off in an epic nine-page battle. Reviewers manhandled both phones for an extended time and broke down the UI, hardware, features and overall usability, so if that sounds like something you'd be interested in, cover your face and head on down to the read link. We're warning you though, it gets ugly.

Brilliant! I've been waiting for this for weeks!.....last one to the conclusion is a rotten egg etc.
"iPhone 3G is still to see a reality check, but it's almost sure that these two can give the latest Apple device a good fight. Maybe they still can't challenge the iPhone interface, but they are finally getting closer."
So, it's a draw.
Why do all of these always end up as an iPhone commercial?
Heh heh. All I can say is, bring these on! Finally, people will begin to realize how difficult it is to replicate the whole package that Apple brought to the fore. And, in the process, guess what: My Apple stock is going to go even higher!
There's nothing like klutzy competition for someone's stock price.
Well, because they actually have a point.
I own an iPhone myself but have been using the Diamond Touch for the last week. While the Diamond Touch does offer you the flexibility of Windows Mobile to install custom apps on your device it suffers from the negative sides too. Although I must admit HTC has finally cleared up their act with the touchscreens, their TYTNII and others are terribly slow and unresponsive (and every customer I've sold one shares my opinion).
But in the end the iPhone is far more responsive in it's UI than the Diamond. When pressing an icon on the standbyscreen of the Diamond you have an animation to switch to that option, but instead of directly playing that animation there's a (2) second pause that makes it look like you didn't really push the icon at all and you have to do it again. Which makes you go 2 icons further instead of 1. And sadly enough there are still scrollbars which you have to tap 3 times in order to get them to scroll, or you can use the arrows at the top/bottom but that makes the point of scrollbars completely obsolete. I encourage HTC to just copy the iPhones flexible scrolling technique which would make their devices easier to use.
And they should have done a complete UI rework, not just the one of the standby screen. The rest has terrible small icons..
@Anoldcarsnickname, you have it right on the money.
I am surprised you didn't get low-ranked: anything semipositive about Apple brings out the low-ranking low-lifes on engadget.com. (They are the same ones that jump and scream with derision about the seemingly jobless people wasting time standing in line in NYC, missing the delicious irony in the fact that their own time seems to have a rather low opportunity cost, given how much time they spend in forums like this trashing Apple and Apple-nonhaters).
All I can say is, since the day the iPhone was announced, the value of AAPL is my portfolio is up by about $100,000. That's about 2 years for my kid's college (for those wondering, post-capital gains taxes).
So go ahead and low-rank me again, folks!
:-P
roole is a tool.
@roole
That is because Anoldcarsnickname has a valid point and has made good reasoned comparisons. I added a positive to his comment ranking. All you know how to do is to make yourself look the fool fanboi, and you wonder why people low rank you. Go home and stop piddling over your own feet.
iphone is for children that like to press the same button over and over again with no change.
windows mobile.. you know the os that is installed on 18 million units and counting.. can do anything you want to do..
sorry apple, im sure the followers you have will finally one day take off their blinders and see the light
HTC Touch FTW
@Steffen:
Or "For The WankING" because the screen res on the Touch Diamond goes all clobbersaurus on the iPhone. Imagine not having to deal with scaled down pr0n. HTC For The Wanking in-fuckin'-deed.

probably the sexiest fight I have ever seen on here
Long live us nerds eh? Who needs girls ;)
That's what we call a "no-brainer"
Xperia X1 has a 3.0 Screen Vs. Touch Pro's 2.8 not much of a difference like the Diamond and the Omnia (Omnia screen is the sh*t!)
X1 has a WVGA screen, meaning 76800 more pixels, and pixel width web browsing
yeah it sucks to have a bigger screen but shitty resolution... with the exception of ease of usability having a bigger touch screen. It kind of defeats the purpose of having a larger screen.
Whoa, the i900 has nearly DOUBLE the battery life...
That is exciting, with DivX movie playing, I'd be using lots of juice.
Don't think the i900 is coming to Sprint though, will be getting the pro once it hits sprint shelves out (Nov. this year?).
there will be a bigger battery for the touch, one from htc with 60% more capacity and one from third party with 100% more capacity
this isn't a rumor both have been confirmed
WQVGA is just not usable for smooth browsing at all, i900 would have been a cool thing with WVGA or more but like this its just another win mobile pda with phone functions
Xperia or Omnia? I would love to go with a full touchscreen interface and landscape keyboard on the Omnia is definitely a plus.
there is software that activates the auto rotation on the diamond in all applications (you can define exceptions) so you can use landscape mode and landscape keyboard everywhere
link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=403939
the guys from xda-developers just have everything you need to make the diamond a perfect phone that blows i900 away
and yes i am a diamond fanboy ;)
xda devolopers are great! here's a link to a .cab file that make's your diamond's touchflo look black again... (for the people with weird colours and menu's messed up by their carriers)
you forgot to provide the link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2360330
it really is sad to see that the diamond doesn't have landscape typing... looks like it's something i'll have to get used to. sigh.
no you don't have to get used to it (see my post above)
I read the review and I think the omnia is the winner... although I love htc I have to hand this one to samsung. The omnia just needs a bit more polish but other than that the longer battery life, better cam, better processor, and faster UI are deal makers for me. I don't want to compromise. Not that I will buy it.... im still waiting on the HTC dream.
I'll take the better resolution of the touch over the 900 although a larger screen would be nice.
Double the battery life on the i900 is a big plus
Resolution of the camera means nothing - the lens is what makes or breaks a camera - but since I don't care about the camera - the biggest seller for me is the flash so I can use the useless camera as a flashlight.
I was cheering for the Diamond until I saw the lack of microsd slots and limited (relatively) memory onboard. Anyone know if the Touch Pro lacks a memory slot? Otherwise the X1 is the easy choice to hold out for.
the Touch Pro and the X1 both have a memory card slot
the touch doesn't have one but i think 4gb is enough for most things, tomtom for middle europe is 400mb, programms you need are
and by touch i mean touch diamond of course
the tough pro has a sd micro slot, so you can expand upon the memory, it also has ram. someone can correct me if im wrong but ill hate you for it.
Good to see the WinMobile crowd will have two products that mimic (skin deep) the iPhone. The review basically says these two phones are "almost as good" as the real thing, but since Windows has been sucking hind teat for quite some time now, the hoi polloi should be used to that second place feeling.
with the new interfaces you can do same as much as with the whole iphone but there is allways win mobile underneath it with which you can do thousand times as much as with the iphone
so the interface might be not as good as the one from the iphone but the features you can get from windows mobile are more and better
The fact that the iPhone cant multitask is a HUGE shortcomming and would even be worth challenging it as a 'smartphone.' Agreed, the winmo phones are trying to catch up as far as UI polish, but as far as what they can do, like run chat programs in the background all day long, makes me question why any serious user would go for that.
Dont waste your time trying to reason with iStans, the learning curve
of a winmo would make their head explode
Im happy to see that the camera is significantly better than my 6800,
and if you have a 6800, you'll agree lol (its that bad)... i wouldve
liked some feed back on the shutter speed (eh, capture speed) as with
the mogul, i could be walking at around 1mph and any picture taken
will look like splash art and tie-dye
The touch interface is looking better and better, but i really cant
wait to get a hold of a touch pro and cut it off, thus freeing up
resources for my application needs *cough*emulators*cough*
I wish that people exhibited an ounce of reading comprehension. The article does NOT say that the iPhone is better. It does say that the UI is superior but WM devices are closing the gap. There is much, much more to a phone than the UI. Both of these devices offer many features that simply aren't available on the iPhone.
WinMo still has a large base of useful applications. For example, MapKing's maps, which cover most of China and Asia, is currently not available for the upcoming GPS iPhone. There's definately still reasons for choosing WinMo, outdated interface aside.
(ignore comment); test post
If only it had a keyboard.
it seems good
HTC Touch wins.
Who wants a crappy 240 x 400 screen? Not anyone who intends to use the web browser, that's for sure.
Those of you who think resolution doesn't matter on a small screen need to see the huge difference.
I got through the first page of the review and realised I didn’t need to read any more:
HTC: No additional storage
Samsung: 320 res
No thanks.
I have an HTC Exec, it’s running WinMo5 which I can just about tolerate but the point is that it gives me a keyboard, 4GB of storage and a large 640res screen. I just can’t see the incentive to move.
What seems to be happening is that the WinMo device makers appear fixated on Apple’s UI at the expense of understanding the markets that got them their success in the first place; slightly more tech and business orientated. I see no fault in understanding that Apple’s excellent UI sets a goal for UI improvement but Apple already “owns” that market. If it were me I’d be pushing an 800*480 screened device with expansion, an improved UI and crammed full of new tech and trying to put some distance between myself and Apple.
I agree.
“If it were me I’d be pushing an 800*480 screened device with expansion, an improved UI and crammed full of new tech “
David are you serious? If you are on engadget my guess is you must have heard of the Xperia, if not, google it. It’s gonna seem very familiar. The HTC Touch Pro is not bad either.
I think the Omnia would be a no brainer if it had a WVGA screen. It is still my choice between the two maybe even against the Xperia as well. The fact is, there is still no one perfect device not even the iPhone. In spite of all marketing dollars and hype around it, it still has glaring flaws.
Im so glad companies are stepping their game up when it comes to phones. Im soooo looking forward to either the Omnia or Touch Pro *** and possibly the HTC DREAM *** But i have to wait atleast until the end of this year which really blows... I'm stuck on a TERRIBLE Treo 700

This seller (nguyenvunhulan and benajmin afful) are CHEATER. Firstly, i transfer USD349 to him for buying 1 unit Apple IPhone from him. Later he say can not ship out if only purchase 1 unit phone. He ask me to buy 5 unit of phones and I only need to pay 50% advance payment of the remain 4 phones. The second and following payment was told to pay to a friends of this seller which is at Nigeria. After I make the 50% payment, he ask me to make full payment. Without any suspect on him, I make full payment. Then, he ask for usd750 payment for tax and other fee. At that time, he did show me a fedex slip. Hence, i make the payment. After that, he ask another usd300 payment. This time, i try to refer to his boss, Benajmin Afful(musicalstore@live.com) and make the usd300 payment to Benajmin Afful. Unfortunately, his boss is BIGGER CHEATER. Now, they only asking another usd185 payment and do not show me any picture or shipment slip of the phones. DAMN THEM !!!
