Purported Nikon Coolpix P6000 turns up online

There's unfortunately nothing more than the image above to go on at the moment but, if it is to be believed, it looks like Nikon could finally be about to bust out a successor to its P5000 series, with this purported P6000 model boasting a revised design and some beefed-up specs. That includes a 13.5-megapixel sensor, a boost to ISO 6400, RAW image support, a new GPS module and, well, everything else you see listed above. Notably absent from that list, however, is any word of a price or release date, though we'd expect those details to be turning up before too long if this rumor does, in fact, turn out to be legit.

There is a date up there, not sure if its a release date or not. "aout 2008" (August 2008) at the top left next to Nikon COOLPIX.

I'm glad there's some work on incorporating advanced communication features on higher end cameras. Especially, since some of its other features seem a little meh ... on a small sensor camera I don't see ISO6400 being that handy...

The specs look great and if it is a successor to the P5000, I pray that Nikon has sped up the time it takes to write the information to the media card. I bought a P5000 for my wife and not until months later while on a trip did I learn how long it took to record a moderately sized image. I'd like to have a decent sized digital personal camera and not lug around a DSLR but not at the expense of waiting 3 to 4 seconds until the next shot.

I have a Canon Powershot G9 and that Nikon looks exactly like it. Take a look at Canon's site. The body is the same. The button layout is the same. I think this is a p-shop job.

It looks a lot more like the P5100. It holds up that retro look, while the G9 is sleeker and more modern looking.

1/1.7 is waaaay too small for 13.5MP. If this is real, I would be hugely surprised if there wasn't excessive noise or watercolor looking noise reduction starting at ISO 400.

It has RAW! About damn time too :) Good to have some new features like GPS - this could be a useful tool for those with d-SLR's which don't have one (btw, this seems like a photographers' compact).

I wonder about its image noise. Its chip size is the same as that of the Fuji f30 but has twice the pixels. And Nikon hasnt exactly been a leader in image noise free pictures in past compacts.
Also, does it come with OIS (optical image stabilization)?

All I care about is does it have a sharp lens, because otherwise this has what I am looking for in a compact. To me this is a G9 with a wide angle lens (yay).

The only thing better than this is if someone started using bigger sensors in compacts. I won't hold my breath on that though.

Judging from Nikon's history of compacts, I wouldn't count on this model to compare to the G9. Nikon makes great DSLR's for sure but their point and shoot models are, for lack of a better term, junk; and don't feature anything close to what I'd call quality optics.

The G9 and other Canon compact cameras aren't without flaws either, but for some reason Canon seems to have a better handle on image quality in point and shoot models.

Have you forgotten that era when the Coolpixes first appeared on the scene?
People were drooling and lusting at them.... Yes, Nikon was leading the way with point and shoots, but as we all know, technology has a way of making the manufacturers play 'catch-up' with each other. In the end, we, the consumers benefit from all this new developments, but suffer from the rapid depreciation of our investments.

Definite stylistic borrowings from both the Canon G7/9 and the Ricoh GRD compacts. So much so my first reaction was to call this a PS hackjob. Probably real though.

ISO6400, 13.6MP... sigh... the boys and girls at dpreview aren't going to be pleased with this one.

The sensor is apparently the same as on the new sony w300 which is hopeful cos that camera has been getting rave reviews about IQ.. of course Nikon will be processing differently, so it could be junk!

Similar to the P5000 with some good improvement (wide angle lens, RAW, GPS, etc.). The sensor should be the one in the Sony W300, that has a good review in Luminous Landscape web site. The style is similar to the P5000 with a more industrial look (from 80's). The previous Nikkor lens from the P5000/P3/P4/P2/P1 was a vewry good one, I hope this was as good or bettre than this lens.

Nikon made excellent SRL/DSRL but their compact cameras are sometime trash, sometimes good. Their first digital compacts were some of the best cameras in these years, but the when they changed to the have the DSRL as their main cameras line, most of their compacts seems to be done by other companies and even the optics were not at the level one may expect from Nikon tradition. The P5000/6000 seem to be the exception...

ABC News' "Tech Bytes" segment said that the camera will be $500.00(US). The GPS feature seems cool, and i imagine, will the GPS location will probably be shown on the resulting image file.
