I'm curious: How does one update a bricked PS3 that had a bad version 2.40 update?
Wouldn't the PS3 have to be sent back to Sony?
Reformatting the hard drive (in a PC or other PS3) unbricks the system.
I am not 100% sure, but to fix a bricked PS3, I have heard of people removing their hard drives from their PS3, backing up their saves, formatting to FAT32, and then reinstalling the drive.

You can send the PS3 back to Sony if you want it to be definitely fixed, or try the hard drive reformatting trick at home if you don't feel it's worth sending it in to hope to save some data. I don't know how Sony would solve this apart from reformatting, but they're pretty good at keeping your data intact when doing other fixes.
