Sure I'd love to have the 3G but I'll stick with my first gen iPhone for now. I just can't see spending the extra money on the service. They might entice me later if they add more storage.
So will new iPhone users act smug to old iPhone users because "my phone is better than your phone" (like they do for other non-iPhone users)?
Will old iPhone users claim "well I had MINE first"?
Will there be fist fights and chaos between 1st and 2nd gen iPhone users?

There will not be a shortage of Iphone3G's.
If you think back to the launch of the 4GB model, the Apple stores still had them long after the release date.
Furthermore, you aren't gonna be allowed to buy more than one - they are forcing you to sign up the contract right then and there to ensure no one tries to unlock them and sell them en mass.
I'm certain not too many people are going to RUSH to the stores to sign up for the new, more expensive contract.
It has been claimed that the new iPhone is actually forcing a shortage of the iPhone 4GB wherever it is sold - specifically EBAY.

I just wish o2 here in the UK would send a conformation e-mail saying i've got one. With all the issues on their site yesterday I'm not holding my breath!

maybe because that is the ONLY physical difference between the 1st and 2nd gen iphones besides the metal volume buttons...just my opinion...

It's been taken with a standart SE cam, hence the blurr. The hands in the pics are indeed quite small ^^ the iphone actually seems smaller than the 1st gen

I know they have their reasons, but why did they have to go to plastic? It's littered with smudges and I'm sure prone to scratches. I really preferred the metal casing.
They went plastic because metal interferes with radio signals, such as GPS and cell tower signals. The original iPhone had a black plastic strip along the bottom of the back side for that reason, signal strength. With more antennas in the 3G iPhone, they had to make the entire back plastic.
It wasn't a design decision, it was a usability decision.

I turned my iPod back to it vanilla status until 2.0 comes out. I don't want to wait 2-4 days (speculative) for the jailbreak community to say jailbreaking is compatible for iPhone/iPod OSX 2.0. Then Apple throws in a few curveballs and screws everyone up. It's been a good run to all the contributors to the jailbreak community but the app store is going to prevail. Especially if they have the rumored 4000 apps online at launch.

you don't seem to think the addition of a gps chip along with the glorified 3g transmitter has anything to do with the plastic backing? or maybe it has to do with those radio waves not propogating through metal that well...

I dont know what the difference is between the original iphone/"FAKE metal look" and the new 3G/plastic one. (In regards to materials)
You know that the back of the original was not metal or anything of the sort. Next you will be asking for "Metal look" Macbooks as opposed to black or white ones.
One thing I am hoping we get with the plastic back is better phone/3G/wifi reception (naturally 3G reception will be better : ). My girlfriend's plastic macbook owns my macbook pro on picking up wifi.
I've heard they have a little more trouble with the aluminum bodies and wifi. Somewhat expectedly (small antenna), the iphones WiFi is not the greatest at picking up a signal but its good enough.
The back of the original was metal except for the plastic strip near the bottom. That was for signal reception, since metal blocks cell signals. That's why the new one is all plastic. GPS means it needs better reception, and it has more antennas.

i have thought it over and decided i don't need the 3g iphone. there is not enough appeal for me over the first gen.
i am only thinking about getting an iphone because the phone i have now broke . they tend to do that when dropped on concrete from a tall height.
