Wizard escape pack: too late for MacGyver, too conceptual for Bauer
Nah, the Wizard isn't a reality just yet, but we can certainly envision this taking up its fair share of shelf space in the not-too-distant future. Dreamed up by the vivid imaginations at HJC Design, this emergency parachute pack would theoretically provide an "automated public safety solution with up to 250-meters of reciprocating lifeline technology." Beyond that, it seems like a pretty invigorating method of avoiding the elevator lines come quittin' time.

So is it like... an instant bungee rope? Or an actual parachute...?
"250-meters of reciprocating lifeline technology" - that bit confuses me
Good if you live in an apartment building I guess...

As I understand it, it's like a grappling hook, except you can't fire it. Which is kind of sad, but greatly increases the odds of getting it to market.

Pfft.... 50' of webbing and a carabiner work fine for the suburbs. Take up less space too.

I was never one to bash the Endgadget writers, but I read the article, and it was very easy to understand, but the Engadget post left me with absolutely no idea of what this thing was.

No kidding. I believe it's a safety harnass for construction workers, like, well, the thousands that already exist.....
the key difference is that it's lighter and the slack is stored on your back instead of at the tether point. *waves a tiny flag* hooray? *crickets*
Matthew C @ Jul 10th 2008 10:51PM
Huh?
I was hoping this was like a personal parachute - so you could be prepared for when the world exploded and you had to jump off a cliff to get food.
...or something like that.
master_sword @ Jul 8th 2008 10:52AM
i read the title quickly, only comprehended "pack" "MacGuyver" and "Bauer", and was expecting a jet pack of some kind. this is disappointing.
thedesolate1 @ Jul 8th 2008 10:58AM
This is perfect for Agent 86...

And here was me thinking it was going to be a replacement for the lifejacket and whistle they peddle on aeroplanes =(
Of course you'd break your neck at 300kts - mere technicalities!

I like the way you spelled airplane - made me thing of the Chili Peppers song.
