Hong Kong's iPhone 3G gets an unboxing
On top of a piano, no less. China might be a bit late to the party by now, but they've sure got class. Taiwan retailer ePrice has unboxed 3's Hong Kong version of the iPhone for your viewing pleasure, and they even did a bit of Chinese handwriting recognition just for kicks. There's video as well (we embedded one after the break), so you really can't go wrong with this one, we promise.
Update: For the record, this is a Hong Kong version of the phone, running what is purportedly a Chinese Traditional (Taiwan's language of choice) UI, unboxed by a Taiwanese retailer. We update the post to reflect those facts, conspiracy theorists can return to their daily lives.

You must be joking, I lived in Taiwan for 15 years and you're telling me they don't use Traditional Chinese? Everything is written in Traditional Chinese there. Every McDonald sign, KFC sign, restaurant menu, Taiwan website, baby food nutritional facts, road sign, etc... Get it right if you're going to correct someone.
If you look at the back it looks like it is a Matte Black paint, not Glossy. Either this indicates a fake or people have misinterpreted previous studio lit photographs of the iPhone 3G.
@rayfire
"China" is assumed to mean PRC as much as "American" is assumed to mean the US.
So yes, it is simple common sense and I do speak on behalf of every "Taiwan is not a part of China" people when I say that they meant "Taiwan was never a part of PRC".
@randomguy
If memory serves me correctly, the official national name of Taiwan is Republic of China. Therefore, you can see why one could be confused when you just use China to represent PRC. (As I suggested, it'll be alot clearer if one says Taiwan was never part of PRC, and only part of RC).
The bottom line is, I think when one says something, they should try to make their point as clear as possible so other readers won't be misled. While it is arguable whether you can speak on behalf of everyone who says "Taiwan is not a part of China", you simply cannot speak on behalf of all the audiences of such statement. When you say things like "it (the statement) is always assumed to mean...", it is clear that you were speaking on behalf of the audiences (readers in this case) and how they suppose to understand the statement. As I point out earlier, you can't expect everyone to assume the same meaning from a sentence as what you intended, rather you should write down what you truly meant in the first place.
@rayfire
I'm from Taiwan, and let me assure you that the only people confused about whether "China" means PRC or ROC are the people who are utterly uneducated in this matter.
@randomguy
I"m also from Taiwan buy rayfire is completely correct. People are going to be ignorant about one thing or another. This time it's the convoluted nature of the political relations of China and Taiwan, the next time you or I could be just as clueless about other political affairs unbeknownst to us. Or it could have nothing to do with politics, like why ppl line up days in advance for the iPhone. Ignorance is a fact of life, everyone is ignorant of something, no mortal is omnipotent. Therefore, it is only natural for ppl to make assumptions on things they don't know. After all, that's how we learn, we generalize (grammatical rules and such) and that's how we retrieve our memories (through a variety of imprecise events, bridging through logical assumptions).
First!
Wow! So now we see somebody using iPod features mmmm looks a lot like my iPhone when I do the same thing mere coincidence
Daiwan aint no China. China is claiming that we are part of them since they are so powerful now, other countries cant really argue against China. Just because Daiwan is so close to China doesnt mean we are part of them. Come on Look at Singapore they got their independence no more than 50 years ago and they are chinese decent so why dont china claim Singapore too then.
For people who actually WANT to attempt to understand this post, I will translate it into English.

Free Hawaii, Free Alaska, Free Texas, Free California Republic!
All you people talking about Taiwan not being a part of China (past or present or future tense) and freeing Tibet, those regions were part of China long before the USA/ Canada/ Australia exist. You guys are just as naive as your President Bush who is basically a joke for his 2-term presidency. Can't blame you guys... that's how you guys were brainwashed since you were born... Tell me about your freedom of whatever or democraZy - it's pure politics, and there's actually NOTHING under the sugar coating that you guys were being fed throughout your whole life.
He has bad taste in music

Anyone knows if there is a regular english version available through 3.hk? Also .. im not completely sure about their subscription plans. Cheapest one is 188 HKD, but how long does it run - and is there anyway that you can pay for the entire duration at once? Does it take a HK address to get the needed subscription?
I've never seen such poor English on Engadget's comment lists.......cracks me up that you're all arguing about this on a gadget blog, get a life. It's the iphone 3G that we're talking about, not 台灣是不是中國的 (whether or not Taiwan is part of China).
You're all wrong. Taiwan is part of US territory. Go look it up, there's some quacks trying to prove that.
