DIY USB Popcorn Maker: pops corn, explodes your mind
You paying attention Redenbacher? Those daring kids at Instructables have created the USB Popcorn Maker from a high intensity heater light, aluminum cup, and mason jar. Add oil, non-Linux kernels, and salt and you're ready to cozy-up in an uncomfortable three-some with the Wachowski Brothers. Unfortunately, the video posted after the break jump-cuts between USB attachment and the first corn kaboom. But given the 5V USB source, you'll likely need plenty of time to get the oil boiling. Then again, nobody said this was practical.

Looks good to fry up those fanboy iCraps
Colin Potter @ Jul 9th 2008 4:30AM
Hmmm... would adding more USB and plugging into a powered hub increase the speed of poppage?
Indecision @ Jul 9th 2008 4:38AM
Linux kernels, that was a very, very baaaad joke
good to see people are out there making useful devices though

Technex @ Jul 9th 2008 5:13AM
STFU. It clearly does, watch the video.
ybd @ Jul 9th 2008 5:11AM
lol my iPhone can also do that n00bs
and I don't even have to enable it, all I have to do is call someone and every corn bag around me starts popping
Technex @ Jul 9th 2008 5:15AM

If ONE more person claims their cellphone makes popcorn I will come to their house and torch their respectice handheld. It is SCIENTIFICALLY IMPOSSIBLE to make popcorn with a cellphone. A cellphone produces anyware from .1 to 1 watt, where a traditional mircowave produces 1

Weird

But i like it
Heuljunge @ Jul 9th 2008 5:36AM
I think it is fake. 5V 500mA --> 2,5Watts. I think not enough to cook.
ECG @ Jul 9th 2008 5:54AM
Could USB 3.0 do this better?
Elijah Bailey @ Jul 9th 2008 5:57AM
Excellent.
Definitively something to try out one day. The idea of having it at a LAN party would be the key element. (I mean, at least use it to power whatever is needed. We [group of friends from my technical past] never used USB that much for that type of experience.
Great tryout if it's actually legitimate.

sweet...........popcorn my fave.
i recon this would work, but you might need more power/usb ports,
MG @ Jul 9th 2008 7:23AM
I don't think the 2,5 watts you can get from the USB-port would be enough to pop corn.
I once saw someone make a coffee warmer, and he used 18 USB ports to get 45 Watts - and that was only enough to keep the coffee warm - not make it warm in the first place.
I seriously doubt this could ever work. And even if it could, you'd be lucky to pop one corn per hour....

I think i know why this is so slow...
Has anyone noticed that the computer powering this is running Vista?
I may be mistaken but my GNOME has never looked like that and I'm pretty sure that KDE doesn't either.
ShadowKain @ Jul 9th 2008 3:57PM
Knome and KDE are repspective GUI's (or should I say Kernal GUI's) to Linux flavors of Operating Systems. Silly NoOb, Windows does not even apply to those two terms. Now YOU may be using linux, but your comment referred to the video, saying you used it as well.

...IDIOT NOOB
ducky12432 @ Jul 10th 2008 12:09AM
I was commenting on the statement "non-Linux kernels"
It was a joke. obviously some people dont understand humor.
And actually to correct you they are not "Kernel GUI's" they are "Desktop environments." that run along with the X server and a window manager "window maker, Metacity, Compiz,, to name a few" provide a "GUI" interface. The Linux Kernel itself does not have a GUI so there are no "Kernal GUI's".
So to clear it up, X and a Window manager are the GUI and GNOME/KDE are the "Desktop Environment" that run on x with a window manager.
oh and its Gnome not Knome. If your going to call someone an "...IDIOT NOOB" you should probably not be going around saying "Knome" it makes you look like a ...

It's great until the lid pops off due to pressure and hot oil spews all over you and your laptop.

Perfect! This goes quite well with my USB mini fridge (http://www.engadget.com/2007/05/21/usb-mini-fridge-keeps-the-dorks-cool/). My life as a [computer] couch potato is almost complete.
Joshua Walters @ Jul 9th 2008 2:32PM
Lets see, Ive got three open USB ports, and Im on the computer for about 6hrs at a time.
I think I could make this work.
