Apple App Store now live!

You can't purchase anything yet but you can sure as hell browse around. The trick: search for a known application or publisher like AOL. Got it? Good, then backup to "App Store" in the navigation menu. We've got AIM messenger, Twitteriffic, and the Apple Remote control application all for free and an endless supply of games including Super Monkey Ball and more. See anything you like?

Woo! I discovered this about 15 mins ago and downloaded alot of apps. Useless without 2.0 though.
Useless without 2.0, but hella good to download now withoute million downloads on Apple's servers tomorrow.
Only geeks will upgrade and purchase apps today.

In their wisdom Apple's Marketing Department apparently decided you had to have an Apple application installed on your PC (iTunes-something) in order to browse around Apple's store that's trying to sell you stuff whether or not you're currently interested in buying

duh. of course you have to have iTunes installed to browse the app store. even if you could buy apps without it, you would need iTunes anyway to use your iPhone/iPod Touch (unless you jailbreak it and manually add stuff, but that's a different story)

Go to iTunes store home page, search AOL. Click on the AIM app, then at the top navigation click App Store.

Looks like it controls AppleTV as well!
Eat this Sonos! Brilliant! The only downside of AppleTV was poor remote (in my mind). This resolves this issue!

If the app store isn't loading, close iTunes and reopen, then try again.
It is beyond stupid to PR-blitz about a gajillion applications to the non-Apple-owning populace, then require that non-Apple-owning populace to install Apple-owning-software on their PCs in order to see the PR-blitz.
I don't have any Apple hardware, thus do not have iTunes, nor will. I can't even see how cool the iPhione is going to be because of that DUHmb requirement.

Oh crap, these applications are GREAT. The remote app works instantaneously - no lag at all! Myspace, facebook, aim, it's all here for free! I have the 2.0 firmware and it loads everything up. Even my iphone's app store application loads the app store.

You can access the store also clicking on Application (if you've enabled iTunes 7.7 to display it) and clicking Buy another application on bottom right corner. You'll be linked to AppStore.
And... free applications CAN be downloaded!!!
Unfortunately firmware 2.0 is not live yet. :/
But...I already have most of these apps from installer. And they were free as well.
However, it probably voided your iPhone's warranty...

fyi, firmware 2.0 beta 8 build 5A345 supports the app store.

Also, if you get a hold of the 2.0 beta, it is ONLY installable via iTunes 7.7 (it backs everything up, so you don't need to worry about your data too much).
It's not up in Germany yet. Unless i'm doing something wrong. I got iTunes 7.7 but no app store. It sucks here!

This is going to screw up a lot of phone companies especially nokia market share all over the world will get screwed up!
iPhone with this AppStore is going to revolutionize the way we use mobile phones. Much like ipod with itunes years back!

Good work Apple, its a great journey! Dell CEO once commented that he would sell of the shares and close the company that was when apple share was less than $6 i guess. And now Apple surpassed dell and is on its way to hit the Microsoft ass!

it looks like what i affraid - although ipod touch and 3g iphone wil be sold here in Estonia, you still need iTunes Store account to get even the free apps. The thing is Estonians like loads of other people around the world cant get an itunes account....
at least at this point, it looks a bit weird.

I'm assuming the app store's are different for US/UK but i'm registered on the US store so all the cinema apps contain US cinemas

i've downloaded some of the free apps however i am unable to sync w/ itunes...do we have to wait for v2.0 in order to get these goodies on our iphones or am i just missing something??

Awesome, it looks like there is a Listen.app type application, - Melodis. Hold your iphone up to a speaker and it will find the name and singer of the song.

you should check out stagehand on the app store. it allows you to control your keynote (sorry no powerpoint) presentations using your iphone/ipod touch. it cost $8 but well worth it.
I just noticed the Myspace app. I think its fair to say its over for other phone companies.
As much as I hate MySpace, you're probably right. I seem to be the only person left who defies the power of MySpace; Even my wife networks like a madwoman on there.

If I install one of these apps and decide I don't like it, how do I get rid of it? (To free up the memory it was using...or to improve stability, which I suppose could be relevant, if the app were poorly written.)
Is that possible? Short of resetting my iPod touch to factory settings: thereby losing bookmarks, contacts, etc.
