So we can't help but notice that Apple still hasn't officially released iPhone software 2.0 for first-gen iPhones, even though most self-respecting gadget freaks have pulled it from the
direct download links that popped up earlier. Since the file was hosted and available on Apple's servers around the time it was expected for release, it seemed safe to assume that it was legit -- and indeed, it (for the most part) works fine and plays well with the
newly-live App Store. But a few of us here have had persistent problems on our first-gen iPhones: interface lag, crashing apps, hard resets, you name it. On top of that, we're hearing whispers that the .ipsw in question was meant only for 3G phones and not first-gen units -- and bizarrely, the build number of what we've got is 5A347, while our launch iPhone 3G is running build 5A345 on them. So until Apple stops being, well, Apple, and clears this all up, we're putting it to you: how are things going? Any problems, or smooth sailing? Happy you took the early plunge? Let us know in comments!
I had the preferences lock up after installing apps, but after a restart everything is peachy. So my advice is to restart everytime after installing a new app
À la windows! :)
@Phillip:
Except with the iPhone you don't have to wait 10 minutes. ;)
dude it's a freaking phone...why would it take 10 minutes...it just has to boot to a 160mb OS
I've installed a bunch of apps and it's been fine... so my advice would be to restart only if there's a problem.
I've had interface lag issues and touches not registering. Highly annoying.
Definitely having issues with the OS lagging and being slow to inputs. No crashes so far.
I've had no UI issues but iTunes insists on shoving all podcasts onto my phone despite none being Unplayed and my wishing to only sync Unplayed. It's very frustrating.
WTF
i'm having the same issues. 2.0 is fucking SLOW as shit!
i hate this. i type faster than the goddamn phone can handle.
ANYONE ELSE HAVE THIS ISSUE? i'm going to take it to apple and get a new one. this thing is a piece.
I'm having all kinds of problems with my iPhone now too.
I have the original 8gb EDGE version, installed 2.0 and everything is just EXTREMELY slow now. Not network dependent apps only. Even dialing a number from the phone app takes FOREVER now.
Some apps crash before they even fully open, then if I reboot those apps work, but then others do not.
I'm trying the full secure erase right now (takes "about an hour") and then I'm going to try a full restore again.
If only my local stores had stock of the 3g iphone!! I'd just buy that and forget about this current phone! lol
Hoo boy, can't wait for the Apple-bashers to start chiming in with "OMG, what a piece of crap, that unreleased, possibly incompatible bit of software doesn't work?? Get WinMo LOL."
OMG, what a piece of crap, that unreleased, possibly incompatible bit of software doesn't work?? Get WinMo LOL.
Your wish is my command, good sir.
WinMo crashes. The Jesus Phone crashes. Get over it.
If its software, that means a human programmed it. We are all flawed and so is everything we create, including software. Get used it.
I hope y'all even noticed I was being sarcastic. :P
2+2=4
There, I made something perfect.
my iPhone 2.0 didn't crash, because i don't have one ;-) WinMo FTW
@Abuzar Baloach:
2+2=5 (for large enough values of 2) :P
@Abuzer
2+2 >=4 in nuclear math ... not too perfect eh?
Whaddyaknow? OS builds for the next device, runnable on the old one without too much trouble, but the odd little glitch here and there?
http://www.engadget.com/2007/11/14/nokia-n810-firmware-leaks-runs-on-n800/
Join the club, iFolks, we've been doing that for some time. Oh, and no whining about those glitches, of course; that's not what hackers do. If you're gonna whine, whine about Apple taking all the fun out of it -- you don't even get to fabricate a MAC address. iFeel your pain...
My iPhone has been crashing a bit lately when I'm web browsing. I installed 2.0 and I hope it fixes the issue.
WinMO crashes MAYBE once a month on me. Maybe. See for those who don't get it you need to manage open apps. Unlike the iShit you can multitask on WM. This is a curse if you have too many apps open and it drags your resources down.
There is a lot of power and functionality in WM. Its not MS's fault if you are too stupid to use it. Unlike Apple who intentionally neuters their shit to make it "user friendly". Sorry guys but lacking functionality ain't user friendly. Its smartphoning for the 'tards.
You have it wrong 2 + 2 = 3. Computers start counting at 0 come on now.
Will you people shut the hell up about Windows Mobile already? I swear, you people camp just to annoy people with your incessant rambling. Stop complaining and continue buying your pay-per-use phones.
And seriously, stop replying to the first comment so people will read your pointless crap. Unless the world is ending and you're warning people to GTFO TO SPACE, no one wants to hear you.
I can't BELIEVE how much the facebook application sucks. AND aim doesn't seem to be forwarding the messages to the phone when running 'in the backround'. What a piece o' crap. Like I'd EVER pay $600 dollors for this the first time round.
The world is ending!
I'm warning you:
GTFO TO SPACE!!!!!
(Apple and MS fanboys excluded, naturally...)
No probs over here! But I haven't really been using it too much.....yet.
Thanks for the heads up, Nilay. I'll wait for it to show up in Software Update :D
Just an FYI, I spoke with an Apple Tech Support Rep a few moments ago (do to a completely un-related issue on my iPhone) and he told me specifically that the 2.0 software will be available tomorrow for download and installation.
Are you serious? I'm too paranoid to jailbreak my phone.
It made me nervous to read the article about installing 2.0. A friend already spilled queso on my first iPhone...no need to fuck it up any further.
/noob
Isn't queso a solid?
If what you said makes sense then I can
spill 5 Tons of bricks on you...
and by 'queso' he means 'man sauce'.
Queso means Cheese so just say Cheese....
All seems to be going well for me. I had AIM crash once, but thats about it. The only other problems have been related to MobileMe Push stuff, and I assume Apple is still working on that, so I am not too worried.
I was stupid and didn't pay attention that you couldn't unlock 2.0 so now I'm screwed. Does anyone know how to get back to 1.1.4? Thanks.
the iphone dev team seems to have unlocked it already.
go to hackint0sh and read the forums under ipwning.. there is a solution for this, i wont detail it here, but basically you have to restore to 1.1.4 twice and then re-unlock.
Why are you low ranking the poor guy?
@minilap: Because it's FUN!
So far so good for me, but AIM does seem buggy and not very useful. I've tested WeatherBug and MonkeyBalls also and they work well.
Uhm... Monkey balls?!.. Doesn't sound like a game I'd wanna play.
Oh, wow, good one Steffen.
Come on Steve, you know you want to play Human Balls as much as everyone else.
Confirmed. Having the same issues, seems unstabble, restarts and crashs often, we now know why this is offically released?
it's not officially released. It will be official tomorrow, like they said.
Mostly smooth, but I have had one hard reset and some app crashes
i restarted after updating, and havent had a problem all day
I have installed the 2.0 software on my original iPhone. Everything is fine.
I installed probably 30 applications ( most of them are free). I spent plenty of time running all these apps.
Had the hard crash once of twice.. I believe there is a memory leak or something of that sort.. After launching, 20+ apps, then apps refuse to launch.. i had to reboot the phone..
Now my next problem is... Syncing.. iPhone backup takes for ever and so far has not even completed once with 2.0 software...
Yes, I have similar problem. Every time I sync, iTunes does a FULL backup (taking 15-20 mins)
I think it's funny you say "everything is fine" and then go thru a litany of failures, one or two hard crashes, apps won't open, and you can't sync.
i'd love to see how you'd describe a really bad experience!
Same experience here. Well, when I first tried to run Super Monkey Ball it kept crashing, but all I had to do was power cycle the phone (first time since the apps had been installed and my data resync'd) and everything is peachy.
The UI seems a hair slower, as is text entry. Nowhere near as bad as most smartphones, but where the original SW almost NEVER had slowdowns, it's more frequent with this SW.
Love the exchange sync for my calendar.
Everything is pretty peachy and works as (not) advertised, but it is sucking my battery life like there's no tomorrow. I'm guessing that's the exchange push at play -- and I have spotty reception at my desk at work, and not even our wifi works very well there. So likely the phone spent all day trying to reauthenticate to my wifi, and try to get an edge signal, and try to get email.
We'll see how it is after a full charge overnight; I'll be on the road tomorrow so I'll likely have better coverage than sitting in the dark corner in my office.
I tried installing the 2.0 firmware on my firstgen and it doesnt even get as far as putting it on, i get an unknown error and it hard resets it, hence loosing all my music, vids and all data
Have you installed iTunes 7.7? I had the same problem and that was the root cause.
Works great here. Best update ever!
fail
Oh come on! People pulled a copy of the build from a part of the server that there wasn't any general public link to and they expect it to work?
Where's the haxxorr expectation that anything taken off a server that isn't for general public consumption wasn't meant for... well... public consumption?
While it is fine and dandy that people are all sorts of excited for this to be released, don't complain if the build you find on the interwebs doesn't work "officially" for your device.
Shouldn't all of this news be on Engadget Mobile?
Software 2.0 is for the iPhone and the iPod Touch, and the iPod touch isnt a phone, so no, its where it should be.
epic fail (Sorry, had to do it.)
2 of my co-workers ran it this morning and didn't have any issues. They had nothing but good things to say.
No problems with my gen 1 iPhone so far. Maybe I will re-install release firmware tomorrow if I have to.
Yes and my problem is the contract. Where is iPod Touch 2.0?
Close your eyes, count to 1 million slowly, and then click "check for updates" in iTunes.
Seriously though, this plus MobileMe going up and down like a roller coaster today is really getting on my nerves.
Everything was working fine for me for a while and then the phone reset itself with no warning while using the Urban Spoons app. Also, AIM is fairly unstable.
Otherwise though, seems good.
No problems yet. Been about 8 hours or so. Looks like they are getting some free mass beta testing.
No problems whatsoever for me. Have installed and played with many apps and deleted apps, without a crash, freeze or hitch. Also turned on two Japanese input methods and typed a bunch of Japanese without any problems. Apps are syncing in both directions without any issues.
I'm of course on a 2G iPhone.
No issues here.
I've had crashes and resets.
The iPhone Dev Team has already Jailbroken the 2.0 firmware they have screenshots at: http://www.iphone-hacks.com/2008/07/10/iphone-firmware-20-is-out-and-jailbroken/ it's not unlocked though :(
If you unlocked your iPhone properly it should stay unlocked regardless of what firmware you install.
That has been my experience, I have 2.0 and put a voda UK SIM in earlier and it worked no problems :)
Installed 2.0 on a non-jailbroken Gen 1 iPhone this morning, along with ~15 apps, and so far, so good!
Contacts continually crashes (on my iPod, 2.0 Beta 8). don't say it's because im on a beta either. The final revision of 2.0 is basically the same. And many other things crash while listening to music. On older versions, it was just safari that crashed but i am having problems with mail and notes.
Well, it has officially bricked my iPhone. I updated this morning, and it was working perfectly fine up until about 5 hours after the update, when it suddenly told me that the phone couldn't make or receive calls and that it needed a repair. I've tried hard resetting it a few times and it takes forever to reboot. When it does reboot it demands to be synced with itunes for activation, and itunes reports that the iphone is unresponsive and asks me to check my sim card. I did that, and it still reports to me that the phone needs repair. The phone has been operating flawlessly for the past 3 months so this development can only be chalked up to me being a bit overeager with the software download. There doesn't seem any way to reset it or restore it. Damn.
Same thing happened to me. It's bricked. Does anybody know a way to fix this? Will people at the Apple store fix it or is it just time to upgrade to 3G. I'm so dumb. I shouldn't have done this. Just bad luck.
Definitely buggy, lags, all apps aside from monkeyballs crash at one point or another. Oh well, impatience is a virtue too right?
my aim keeps crashing but thats about it.
A few problems here...
Anyone successfully sync back the apps to iTunes yet? After I synced it the apps won't show up on iTunes and then the apps won't load on iPhone afterward. I had to delete them and redownload from Apps store. I also had syncing lock ups. I hope the FW is not causing all this mess.
> Anyone successfully sync back the apps to iTunes yet?
Right click on the iphone icon and select "transfer purchases." It will move apps downloaded on the phone back to iTunes.
Smooth sailing here, and I'm loving the new apps. I still can't figure out how the hell Shazam works though. That must be one hell of a database on the back end.
After a bit of a quirk getting the firmware to run, I finally got it to work and have had no issues. I loaded on about 11 apps and have had no problems so far, although it DOES seem to take a while to install the apps.
Lost all my movies and music, but I had the playlists saved in iTunes, so I just loaded them back on. Nothing wrong... yet!
All photos and contacts synced back on flawlessly.
Installed it everything is working fine exect I cant turn the my iphone off, after sliding your finger to turn it off it just restarts.
Hard Reset X 2times in 30 minutes
App Store is great !
btw, each hard reset takes like 5 mins, dun update if u want a usable phone
Remote crashed on me, but that's about it. Otherwise, pretty nice, although I did get used to some of my jailbreak apps, and I'm feeling the lack of them.
I don't feel one bit sorry for you who blindly downloaded and installed a firmware update because Engadget/Gizmodo/MacRumors told you to. How does anyone know what version/build of the firmware this is? Oh that's right, they don't, yet they keep downloading it and bricking their iPhones. Awesome!
dude, chill
curiosity's a bitch. no one told us to download it.. and for most its working great. i downloaded it fully understanding that my phone could have been destroyed.. and i love that i could give two shits either way.
TOTALLY AGREE. I don't know what people with an "OMG I BEAT APPLE" attitude expect when they try to install something that hasn't been officially released. All ya'll eager beavers deserve your bricks.
Yeah! These here intartubes are no place for discussions of Tomato Firmware, XBox modchips, regedit, or overclocking.
Just use your gadgets like your helpful corporate overlords benevolently allow you to, and bring an end to all discussion of technology-related shenanigans and tomfoolery!
Works 100% perfectly here. Haven't had one glitch or crash yet. Have installed about 5 apps so far.
I have installed 2.0 this morning and so far, not too many problems. Keyboard lags when typing a message in SMS. App Store crashes as times. Other then that, I've been enjoying it. I've already downloaded a bunch of free apps and I'm having so much fun with them, it's like I am in Disneyland.
I want to have hot, kinky sex with this AOL Radio application.
Works well for me, Corporate Exchange setup and is updating over Edge, MonkeyBall crshed once and i turned the phone off and on, now it is working, AIM works but PUSH AIM is not working after I exit the program, as shown in the Keynote (not sure if this only works for MobileMe subscribers) Shozu working flawlessly as is Facebook and Myspace. Oh Calender color coding was a bitch to work out, but i have calendar color coding working on it too.
So far so good for me.
I just loaded the software and there were no problems at all.
I believe they said that the push notification availability for the dev apps wouldn't be out until September
Lucky SOB. If i could get exchange working, id give...."certain body parts"...uggg.
Sure sounds like there's a problem with the API that developers use.
I wonder if people are getting crashes using the standard iPhone apps and not the third-party ones (I haven't).
Downloaded apps from itunes. All good. Downloaded apps from the iphone. All good. So far, I have about 6 apps and they're all running fairly well, except for AIM, which has stuttering problems. Remote is my favorite one so far.
I've had it on since 10 am EST with no problems. I did restore it from an iLiberty jailbreak BEFORE I applied the 2.0 upgrade.
Well it seems that all the "push" functions are not working. The push email never updates on its own and AIM doesn't notify you if you have a new IM unless you are in the application itself.
Otherwise, fine.
AIM isn't going to work like that until the September messaging update. Until then, you'll have to be in the AIM app to see new IMs. The push stuff may not be working yet because MobileMe seems to be not quite done yet.
I can't get iTunes to recognize my first ten iphone and start to sync. It processes the photos but does not bring up the phone sync.
