So we can't help but notice that Apple still hasn't officially released iPhone software 2.0 for first-gen iPhones, even though most self-respecting gadget freaks have pulled it from the
direct download links that popped up earlier. Since the file was hosted and available on Apple's servers around the time it was expected for release, it seemed safe to assume that it was legit -- and indeed, it (for the most part) works fine and plays well with the
newly-live App Store. But a few of us here have had persistent problems on our first-gen iPhones: interface lag, crashing apps, hard resets, you name it. On top of that, we're hearing whispers that the .ipsw in question was meant only for 3G phones and not first-gen units -- and bizarrely, the build number of what we've got is 5A347, while our launch iPhone 3G is running build 5A345 on them. So until Apple stops being, well, Apple, and clears this all up, we're putting it to you: how are things going? Any problems, or smooth sailing? Happy you took the early plunge? Let us know in comments!

Hoo boy, can't wait for the Apple-bashers to start chiming in with "OMG, what a piece of crap, that unreleased, possibly incompatible bit of software doesn't work?? Get WinMo LOL."
Ignatius @ Jul 10th 2008 6:53PM
OMG, what a piece of crap, that unreleased, possibly incompatible bit of software doesn't work?? Get WinMo LOL.
Your wish is my command, good sir.
Rich @ Jul 10th 2008 7:18PM
WinMo crashes. The Jesus Phone crashes. Get over it.
retro77 @ Jul 10th 2008 7:25PM
If its software, that means a human programmed it. We are all flawed and so is everything we create, including software. Get used it.
Ignatius @ Jul 10th 2008 7:27PM
I hope y'all even noticed I was being sarcastic. :P
Abuzar Baloach @ Jul 10th 2008 7:46PM
2+2=4
There, I made something perfect.
Malikye @ Jul 10th 2008 7:55PM
my iPhone 2.0 didn't crash, because i don't have one ;-) WinMo FTW
SirCrumpet @ Jul 10th 2008 8:05PM
@Abuzar Baloach:
2+2=5 (for large enough values of 2) :P
Krush @ Jul 10th 2008 8:27PM
@Abuzer
2+2 >=4 in nuclear math ... not too perfect eh?
Benson @ Jul 10th 2008 8:36PM
Whaddyaknow? OS builds for the next device, runnable on the old one without too much trouble, but the odd little glitch here and there?
http://www.engadget.com/2007/11/14/nokia-n810-firmware-leaks-runs-on-n800/
Join the club, iFolks, we've been doing that for some time. Oh, and no whining about those glitches, of course; that's not what hackers do. If you're gonna whine, whine about Apple taking all the fun out of it -- you don't even get to fabricate a MAC address. iFeel your pain...
happy_penguin @ Jul 10th 2008 8:43PM
My iPhone has been crashing a bit lately when I'm web browsing. I installed 2.0 and I hope it fixes the issue.
Jon Doe. @ Jul 10th 2008 10:50PM
WinMO crashes MAYBE once a month on me. Maybe. See for those who don't get it you need to manage open apps. Unlike the iShit you can multitask on WM. This is a curse if you have too many apps open and it drags your resources down.
There is a lot of power and functionality in WM. Its not MS's fault if you are too stupid to use it. Unlike Apple who intentionally neuters their shit to make it "user friendly". Sorry guys but lacking functionality ain't user friendly. Its smartphoning for the 'tards.
jc @ Jul 11th 2008 12:46AM
You have it wrong 2 + 2 = 3. Computers start counting at 0 come on now.
waiownsyou @ Jul 11th 2008 1:13AM
Will you people shut the hell up about Windows Mobile already? I swear, you people camp just to annoy people with your incessant rambling. Stop complaining and continue buying your pay-per-use phones.
And seriously, stop replying to the first comment so people will read your pointless crap. Unless the world is ending and you're warning people to GTFO TO SPACE, no one wants to hear you.
MJZimmer88 @ Jul 11th 2008 2:06AM
I can't BELIEVE how much the facebook application sucks. AND aim doesn't seem to be forwarding the messages to the phone when running 'in the backround'. What a piece o' crap. Like I'd EVER pay $600 dollors for this the first time round.
Benson @ Jul 11th 2008 11:06AM
The world is ending!
I'm warning you:
GTFO TO SPACE!!!!!
(Apple and MS fanboys excluded, naturally...)
iambored8907 @ Jul 10th 2008 6:40PM
I had the preferences lock up after installing apps, but after a restart everything is peachy. So my advice is to restart everytime after installing a new app
Philip Harrison @ Jul 10th 2008 7:01PM
À la windows! :)
Josh @ Jul 10th 2008 10:51PM
@Phillip:
Except with the iPhone you don't have to wait 10 minutes. ;)
Ivan @ Jul 11th 2008 1:54PM
dude it's a freaking phone...why would it take 10 minutes...it just has to boot to a 160mb OS
morcheeba @ Jul 10th 2008 11:54PM
I've installed a bunch of apps and it's been fine... so my advice would be to restart only if there's a problem.
Harkonian @ Jul 11th 2008 6:42AM
I've had interface lag issues and touches not registering. Highly annoying.
MacBookOwner @ Jul 10th 2008 6:41PM
Thanks for the heads up, Nilay. I'll wait for it to show up in Software Update :D
michael.kotzum @ Jul 10th 2008 6:54PM
Just an FYI, I spoke with an Apple Tech Support Rep a few moments ago (do to a completely un-related issue on my iPhone) and he told me specifically that the 2.0 software will be available tomorrow for download and installation.
Squid7085 @ Jul 10th 2008 6:41PM
All seems to be going well for me. I had AIM crash once, but thats about it. The only other problems have been related to MobileMe Push stuff, and I assume Apple is still working on that, so I am not too worried.
Andy @ Jul 10th 2008 6:42PM
Definitely having issues with the OS lagging and being slow to inputs. No crashes so far.
Roque @ Jul 10th 2008 6:42PM
No probs over here! But I haven't really been using it too much.....yet.
Joe @ Jul 10th 2008 8:32PM
I've had no UI issues but iTunes insists on shoving all podcasts onto my phone despite none being Unplayed and my wishing to only sync Unplayed. It's very frustrating.
jacob @ Jul 11th 2008 5:59PM
WTF
i'm having the same issues. 2.0 is fucking SLOW as shit!
i hate this. i type faster than the goddamn phone can handle.
ANYONE ELSE HAVE THIS ISSUE? i'm going to take it to apple and get a new one. this thing is a piece.
Jon @ Jul 13th 2008 1:22PM
I'm having all kinds of problems with my iPhone now too.
I have the original 8gb EDGE version, installed 2.0 and everything is just EXTREMELY slow now. Not network dependent apps only. Even dialing a number from the phone app takes FOREVER now.
Some apps crash before they even fully open, then if I reboot those apps work, but then others do not.
I'm trying the full secure erase right now (takes "about an hour") and then I'm going to try a full restore again.
If only my local stores had stock of the 3g iphone!! I'd just buy that and forget about this current phone! lol
Heckfu @ Jul 10th 2008 6:42PM
Are you serious? I'm too paranoid to jailbreak my phone.
It made me nervous to read the article about installing 2.0. A friend already spilled queso on my first iPhone...no need to fuck it up any further.
/noob
GRoar1 @ Jul 10th 2008 9:04PM
Isn't queso a solid?
If what you said makes sense then I can
spill 5 Tons of bricks on you...
Frank Furter @ Jul 10th 2008 7:54PM
and by 'queso' he means 'man sauce'.
Roko @ Jul 16th 2008 12:37PM
Queso means Cheese so just say Cheese....
Eric Taylor @ Jul 10th 2008 6:42PM
Confirmed. Having the same issues, seems unstabble, restarts and crashs often, we now know why this is offically released?
Scott Miller @ Jul 10th 2008 9:54PM
it's not officially released. It will be official tomorrow, like they said.
bob @ Jul 10th 2008 6:42PM
Works great here. Best update ever!
lu1de @ Jul 10th 2008 6:43PM
fail
Robb @ Jul 10th 2008 6:43PM
i restarted after updating, and havent had a problem all day
Michael Schmitt @ Jul 10th 2008 6:43PM
Oh come on! People pulled a copy of the build from a part of the server that there wasn't any general public link to and they expect it to work?
Where's the haxxorr expectation that anything taken off a server that isn't for general public consumption wasn't meant for... well... public consumption?
While it is fine and dandy that people are all sorts of excited for this to be released, don't complain if the build you find on the interwebs doesn't work "officially" for your device.
cbp @ Jul 10th 2008 6:43PM
So far so good for me, but AIM does seem buggy and not very useful. I've tested WeatherBug and MonkeyBalls also and they work well.
.max @ Jul 10th 2008 7:25PM
Uhm... Monkey balls?!.. Doesn't sound like a game I'd wanna play.
warrrennnnn @ Jul 10th 2008 8:29PM
Oh, wow, good one Steffen.
Backlin @ Jul 10th 2008 8:53PM
Come on Steve, you know you want to play Human Balls as much as everyone else.
Unknown @ Jul 10th 2008 6:43PM
Shouldn't all of this news be on Engadget Mobile?
Chris @ Jul 10th 2008 8:12PM
Software 2.0 is for the iPhone and the iPod Touch, and the iPod touch isnt a phone, so no, its where it should be.
TimMStark @ Jul 10th 2008 6:43PM
I was stupid and didn't pay attention that you couldn't unlock 2.0 so now I'm screwed. Does anyone know how to get back to 1.1.4? Thanks.
lostarchitect @ Jul 10th 2008 6:45PM
the iphone dev team seems to have unlocked it already.
Ryan @ Jul 10th 2008 7:06PM
go to hackint0sh and read the forums under ipwning.. there is a solution for this, i wont detail it here, but basically you have to restore to 1.1.4 twice and then re-unlock.
Minilap @ Jul 10th 2008 7:16PM
Why are you low ranking the poor guy?
