So we can't help but notice that Apple still hasn't officially released iPhone software 2.0 for first-gen iPhones, even though most self-respecting gadget freaks have pulled it from the
direct download links that popped up earlier. Since the file was hosted and available on Apple's servers around the time it was expected for release, it seemed safe to assume that it was legit -- and indeed, it (for the most part) works fine and plays well with the
newly-live App Store. But a few of us here have had persistent problems on our first-gen iPhones: interface lag, crashing apps, hard resets, you name it. On top of that, we're hearing whispers that the .ipsw in question was meant only for 3G phones and not first-gen units -- and bizarrely, the build number of what we've got is 5A347, while our launch iPhone 3G is running build 5A345 on them. So until Apple stops being, well, Apple, and clears this all up, we're putting it to you: how are things going? Any problems, or smooth sailing? Happy you took the early plunge? Let us know in comments!
HURRRAAAAYYYYYYYYY
After i did update to 2.0 even i got the same stupid itunes logo with usb cable....
I didnt disconnected the phone....
When it said Itunes store is timed out or whatever the fuccking error message...
I said ok...
Then i clicked some other tab... in my case..."music"
Later i again clicked on iphone tab...
Do it couple of times...
It really workedddddddddddd.....
Looks like I'm fixed...restoring right now...
What did you do?
ZorPrimus, what did you do to finally get it to work...was it the clicking back and forth thing for 10 minutes?
Same problem as ZorPrimus....upgraded iTunes to 7.7 downloaded and started the update...it failed and now have the USB cable and iTunes logos on screen and windows fails to locate the driver for the device. Under device manager it shows the driver in restore mode...cannot for the life of me figure it out.
2.0 finally!
Was it the clicking back and forth between one of the headers in your library and Iphone that did it, or something else?
I downloaded and installed the new 2.0 firmware update directly from itunes software and now after the update completed and it tried to open the itunes store I get an error saying that "We could not complete your Itunes store request . The network connection timed out".
Any suggestions as to what this problem is, my phone will not work at all now without reconnecting to the Itunes Store!
Just got off the phone with Iphone support. They are blaming the problem on ATT servers being overwhelmed and unable to reactivate phones for several hours. This evidently applies to 2g and 3g.
Same here, stuck like the rest of you with the iTunes logo, USB cable and "can't access iTunes Store". Definitely not impressed with this rollout ...
Yeah, what a joke. My boss ran the update (without asking me first), so here I am stuck in iTunes trying to connect (30+ minutes and counting) to get his phone to work.
Good thing I didn't have any lunch plans. I guess you could say this is a disaster of "Microsoftic" proportions.
Anyone know how to fix this problem with 1st generation iphones?
Installed from the direct download yesterday. everything is working great. So far the push through MobileMe is working......
i do plan on restoring using the 'official' release candidate after the servers aren't overloaded.
So there have been three recommendations for what appears to be a commonly recurring issue - 1) follow the 6 step process to downgrade back to 1.4, a temporary solution 2) keep clicking the iPhone indicator in order to fight your way through a crowded server 3) wait until the servers calm down.
Can anyone confirm that option 2 actually works (eventually), so we don't waste a ton of time?
Option 2 has not worked for me, going on 3 hours now, I hate to think that I am going to have to leave my iphone attached to my pc at work for the whole weekend, hopefully they get it back up soon!
I have a first-gen iPhone and I can't even access the apple store to re-enable my account. My coworker down the hall has also lost all functionality on her phone when she downloaded the update. Now I'm reading the headlines that everyone across the U.S. is having similar problems.
Who knows what problems await as soon as I can actually USE my phone again.
This is a big screw up on Apple's part.
I have a firstgen iphone with 5a347 and a 3g with 5a345.
I find the firstgen to be more stable.
In particular AIM was able to show me buddies online on the firstgen, but its completely useles on my 3G iPhone.
Wierd...
I brought my 1st generation phone into the Apple Store in Chicago because the installation would have an error and stop loading while installing the "Firmware."
They said my phone was trying to reinstall the old 1.4 version for some odd reason. I have to go back tomorrow, and if they can't fix it, I have a chance at getting, yet another, 1st generation phone. Bummer, huh? I thought they might knock the price down on a new one...
Anyway, is there a way I can fix this from home?
Huge nasty crash at first. It asked me if my SIM card was enabled or something. Followed the above mentioned tips to go to:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808
THIRD time was the charm, and while it said it was restoring back to 1.1.4, it finally popped up saying it was synced and activated, the apps store icon and the apps I'd downloaded onto my computer last night in the new iTunes were there, and everying seems to be okay.
Patience is the key to the upgrade. Just keep the full restore as in the support instructions a few times and most likely you'll be up and running.
Alright, it finally worked for me, my 1st gen iphone is working after 3 hours of connection errors, don't give up!
Here is a source for the OFFICIAL 2.0 firmware

Thanks, Duane. I was just whining about pre-release 2.0 problems - maybe I'll give this a shot. :-)
Anyone have a direct link to the 2.0 firmware for the 1st gen phones? Not the "early" versions from yesterday. But what people are getting from iTunes today.
I installed an early version and my wi-fi is jacked now. And I tried to rollback to 1.4 and now Im semi-bricked. :o\
After updating to the 2.0 software I can't open my email! ARG. If I go to settings trying to delete my email accounts, no go. I press delete account and nothing happens.
Anybody have a solution??
aww,
it wasn't that bad only took me about a few hours, itunes was not responding and i was a little afraid of fooling with my phone-luckily i got a call and things got better. um you got to update itunes, don't check the safari box (windows), then maybe itunes will recognize your phone. if not go ahead and uninstall itunes and reinstall it. glad i was a little hopped up one meds for wisdom teeth removal, come to think of it glad i had time off, who says there's no tooth fairy. back to iphone 2.0. so now one of the longest downloads ever is done, anxiety is a little eased, but now wait for like the next gen phone to come out, or on googles, then check out the calculator yep twist it wow something i can use. then go thru the apps on the app store. 3 i like so far ypmobile, mobile news, & weather bug,
Regrets are often a function of whether we believe we "got away with something" or not: had none yesterday; have a few this morning.
The Thursday 2.0 seemed to work great all day yesterday, then last night my new apps quit working (they come up and then shut down immediately). So those aren't usable. Haven't noticed any other bugginess so far, except some general perceived sluggishness in moving around, typing. etc.
I''d like to get the "official" upgrade, but I'm not sure how to do that. I've synced a couple of times since installing 2.0, so if I restore it's not clear to me that I'll do anything but kill my data and be left with the pre-release build of 2.0 on my phone anyway. And I'm sure I'm far from the only 1st gen iPhone user in this situation.
What amazes me is that iTunes can't make the distinction between what I've got on my phone and the official release - or is it that is *can*, and leaving crippled software in place simply is Apple's middle finger to those of us who couldn't wait for their Friday Morning Fiasco?
So I guess I'll just limp along with this version until the next OS release in six months or so (at which point I assume the phone will be bricked since I'll be upgrading from an unofficial build). Shame.
Tried Duane's link (above) to the earlier 1.1 build of the 2.0 software, and it seems to be a lot more stable - got my apps back. Thanks, Duane!

Normally time heals all wounds, but for the time being I am stuck with an inoperable unlocked iPhone, not even allowing emergency calls and iTunes telling me that my SIM-card is apparently not supported. I bought the iPhone unlocked about 6 months ago but probably now needs unlocking again under the upgraded OS 2.0. Did I overlook this drawback? How do I proceed?
I upgraded on Thursday and had no problems until yesterday. It seems that there is a strip half an inch wide that is unresponsive to touch about 2/3 of the way up on the phone. Im currently downloading Duane's link, and I hope that works. Anyone else have similar issues?
My iPhone worked fine for the first two days after updating, but then this morning started locking up when going into applications, even email and the calendar. I did a full restore, and it worked for a few hours but is now having the same problem again.
The AIM push messages turn out blank....
The chat in the facebook at sometimes disappears...
I got the unofficial release off the web and it was horrendous. I knew a few minutes after install that there was something wrong. Huge lags, jerky screen animations, porgram crashes, battery life really poor, too name but a few.
As soon as the official itunes install came on line I restored and reloaded my phone from back up. The official release is much smoother but stil getting program crashes, battery life is back to normal but one thing I have noticed that never affected me with prior versions e.g. 1.1.4 is the phones reception. On o2 here in the UK I always and I mean always has 5 bars of signal strength, the edge network was as good as it could be. However since installing the 2.0 software I only got 2-3 bars tops and the edge network is definitely slower than before.
Has anyone else noticed this or is it just coincidental that the o2 network has become rubbish at the same time that I installed this new software.
I'm also having issues. I upgraded to the new phone on Saturday. Since then, apps have crashed and the phone settings crashed on me. From what I can tell, something's buggy with this firmware.
I am having the SAME problem. My iphone is currently a brick and won't connect to the itunes won't even give me the option to restore!! the only thing I have is itunes icone and usb cable on the sreeen that it
Actually I had a hardware problem with my 16GB iPhone..
I bought it on Saturday at an AT&T Store. When I got home I noticed there was a 'dead spot' on my screen; i.e. a spot where there was no touch communicaton on my screen.
I went to my local apple store the same day, they didn't have any more bar appointments that day, I had one made for the next day.
They reset my phone, then rebuilt it, the problem still persisted.
They replaced it right then and there with a new one; and the problem is history.
Very pleased.
well I finally got it, I waited I line on Monday for all of about thirty minutes at the south coast plaza apple store. Sign up took about ten minutes. It's a pretty cooll device, but the 2.0 software is a bit glitchy.
When I type on email or try and access contacts from any application there is a definite lag, in some cases as much as 15 seconds. Hopefully that is one bug that will get ironed out in the first bug fix.
I am having a very bad echo problem with my bluetooth while in 07 infiniti g35.
What the F*&%^ apple get it together. Between this and launch day they better start fixing these issues cause I will be going back to my old iphone REAL soon!
Here are the problems I am experiencing after upgrading to iphone 2.0.
1. Touch Screen not responding sometimes.
2. Crashing Apps
3. Frozen screen forcing me to do a hard reset
4. Lagging
And thats almost all of them though i know that there are some more, i just cant put my finger on it.....
Anyways I know Apple will come up with a software update to fix all of these problems.
I did the 2.0 upgrade, saturday, on a 1st gen iphone- bought in France from Orange, legally un-locked and now working on a Vodafone (UK) account happily for 6 months, it took some time but all restored ok B U T then people started to call me on my land line saying that they were getting an engaged tone when ringing my number....I can make outgoing calls, I can text and recieve texts but can't receive phone calls....not such a good thing for a telephone... I called my service provider (vodafone UK) to check that there were no problems with the network....no probs. I changed the SIM (to Orange and SFR) and was able to make and receive calls normally....it would seem that something in the update has "talked" to the SIM and told it not to receive voice calls.....has anyone else had this problem and found a solution to it? btw when I-tunes restores it says that the phone has been sucessfully unlocked.
OMG IPHONE 2.0 SUCKS!!!
I am having the following problems.
1. In email. There is a 5-7 sec. delay when deleting emails.
2. Definite lagging on texting. I never had this problem before.
3. Lagging on everrrrryyything. I wish I wouldnt have upgraded. 2.0 sucks.
I am having the same problems....super long sync times...lags on texting, frequent crashes / resets on using apps ....crashes and forced resets on doing ANYTHING camera is delayed by 6-8 seconds.....and just all around frustration...
I honestly wish I never upgraded and its making me hate this phone....(2g)..
I loved everything about the iPhone until 2.0 came out...now its a pain in the ass...
APPLE FIX THIS..AND DO IT RIGHT THIS TIME!!!
My 3G iPhone works just fine except for one thing: Mail keeps freezing. The phone will receive email like it usually does and then stops working. The only way I've found to "restart" the Mail program is to turn the phone off and then on. Once I do that, email starts working again. This has happened three times now since I bought the phone last Saturday. And, I haven't found a "fix" for this problem other than to turn the phone off.
had the iphone 2.0 a week now.
Have had huge issues with crashes, lagging and restarts.
Problem with mine was/is the activesync.
Firstly changing the settings from push email to fetch solved it for a few days - now the lagging / crashing is appearing even when the activesync is set to fetch from the exchange server.
Am amazingly disappointed and frustrated with this now.
Bought the iphone specifically or its capabilities to sync with exchange
I'm having major wifi connectivity issues in that it doesn't see several wireless networks in my area, one of which it'd been working fine with for over a year. AppleCare and even a Senior Product Tech were unable to fix the issue, which is prevalent all over the discussion forums and I've been advised to take it into a store to swap it.
Upgraded to 2.0 with my 1st gen phone, it worked for about a day, then my antenna died. Kept saying "no service". Took it to AT&T, SIM worked fine, phone jacked up. After having to crash the "genius bar" at Apple, they replaced my phone.
Came home, restored from back up and am having the following problems:
1. Low bars. I normally get all 5 sitting at my desk at work, not I get 1-3.
2. Lag with typing, and ultra lag if music is playing and I'm typing.
I really hate that I keep drinking the apple kool-aide...
I should have never upgraded early. My iPhone continued to crash and after may hard resets, I called the Apple Care Team. They told me to download the firmware again and re-sync it through iTunes. It worked fine after that for about an hour and every time you would left it idle for more than 15 minutes it shut off and you had to press the reset/home button for 15 seconds to turn it back on. It continued to do this for half a day so I once again called the Apple Care Team and they said it must be a hardware issue and that they would replace it with a new one. I totally believe it was the early version of the firmware that caused it and even though I re-installed the firmware, something hung and it didn't get replaced. I now have a new iPhone from Apple and it's working great! :-D
smooth sailing here!
i hve an iphone first gen, but its not working now... suddenly my iphone turn off by it self and then i charged it an then on the screen, i have to connect to itune. after i connescted to itune, the itune say i have to restore.... and then after that theres an error on some part, thats mean the restore not succes. what should i do
hey nilay wen is dev team going to release the 3g unlock ? does anyone have any idea ??
