It's iPhone 3G tear-down time
It's that time again. With the first retail sale of any hotly anticipated device comes the ritualistic tear down. iFixit is with us in New Zealand for the honors on the iPhone 3G. Squeemish fanboys might want to look away. Haters, lean in and watch the carnage, the action is live and apparently, a little dirty.
Update: Nekkid, with chips exposed after the break.

Update: Nekkid, with chips exposed after the break.

I know this is the most useless comment ever, but ya might want to clean the nails. Just saying but good post anyway.
Agreed.
Uhhh.... isn't what they mean by saying it's "a little dirty." Or did they mean dirty in the.... we're taking off this device's covering kind of way?
At least they apologized:
"(Sorry about the dirty fingernails-- we've been waiting in line in cold Auckland for a while.)"
Agreed!
"Sorry about the dirty fingernails-- we've been waiting in line in cold Auckland for a while"
Unless they were digging their way through the line, I can't see how that's relevant.
Where's the battery picture?? upload more pics
Im sorry but that is the most stupid comment ive ever seen
A) Waiting for something like that in line for... i dont even wanna guess how many hours
B) Doing dirty work like a techy is something ur nail have to deal with, and by the sounds of it, people like you have to deal with aswell
C) On top of all that, these people bring great reviews, they do the "dirty" work so others dont have to, they bring very technical detailed notes about how things work, who the hell are u to critisize them?
When you become as good and advanced as they are, THEN u can talk, until then, keep ur fingers to urself
Wow... that was probably the fastest that I've ever seen a release, then tear down. Great job staying on top of it for us who stayed home sick today :D
actually the folks at gizmodo were a bit faster xD what is up with this crave for dissections
Can you remove the "Do not remove" part? lol :-P
What a waste of time and money, one word stupid ass.
One word stupid ass? ......What?
And why are you crying? It's not like it's your money.
Some might say your ps3 was a waste of time and money.
I'm not. I own one and I love it. Just saying..
PS. 'stupid ass' is two words.
Which one is the "one word"?
L2count
Waste of money? Not at all.
1. Be the first to dissect an iPhone 3G and post pictures online.
2. Back links from Engadget result in massive traffic increase.
3. Increased traffic result in more ad revenue.
4.??????????????
5.Profit.
@ Homeboy
Profit = pocket money = more iPhones + more other gadgets = more teardowns = more cash
This is how you make iPhones from one iPhone, kids
You know, you can't spell "PS3guy" without "3g".
I've got two words for you: You're a stupid ass.
Who knew spaces were parts of words?
^That's a long word up there.
Im pretty sure "stupid ass" is one word.....or 3 words......but its definitely not 2 words
i think its 5 words like " the bs3 sucks monkey Balls "
In 1 word or more...
You must absolutely HATE movies and Television... You'll notice in many films certain items, such as Mercedes, Lamborghini or even entire Big Rigs explode.... It's money well spent, wouldn't you say?
Things like this have, at the VERY least, an entertainment factor...
I'm sorry to have to hijack the 3rd comment, but after reading all of the other comments about how Engadget should post on other things, have you not noticed how Engadget posts about the RED camera
and Motorola
and Seagate
and Kodak
and V12 concept designs
and Breakout Box
and Sony laptops
and Nvidia chips
and MTI micro
and the Blackberry Bold
and the Samsung U4
and..........?
Seriously, the fact that you guys overlook all of the other articles that Engadget posts daily and focus in on the Apple ones shows your deep hatred.
I don't understand. Posting things about Apple doesn't cut down on the number of other posts they can do for the day. They don't have a limited number of posts.
Shut the fuck up and if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.

3G iPhone...? Its supposed to ship on the 11th of July !
Half way around the world, the retailers may already have it stocked.
There are other places in the world other than the US you know.
Where have you been the last few days, under a rock? Geeze....
Time zones - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_zone
It is already July 11th in NZ.
It's amazing to see how many American's don't think there are other places than well, the USA. I love America but a lot of people seem to lack cultural or global awareness. It's a huge country but there are things like time zones, different currencies that also call theirs the dollar, cars that drive on the 'wrong' side of the road, cars with wheels on the 'wrong' side, etc. Oh, we also get the Internet too, fancy that!
@daza and @BigBloke - with a little effort you could find out that Jash Sayani is in India. So while normally you would be correct about our American ego-centricity, in this case you're off the mark.
Yes, because ethnocentrism is only prevalent in the United States.
Also, the George W Bush vocabulary award goes to Rand for his creation of "American ego-centricity."
Egocentrism != Ethnocentrism.
@John: I actually did mean to use the word "ego" (as in all about us, or if it isn't about us its crap), but I will accept your GW Bush Vocabulary Award and proudly display it on my bookshelf next to my World's Worst Bowler award and a potato I found that looks like Abraham Lincoln. ;-)
@Rand
Then it makes it even worse, since according to the timestamp when he posted, he was approx. 3 hrs before midnight. NZ is only 51/2hrs ahead of India.
Like I said, under a rock ;-)
@ Daza
It's also amazing how many people say "Americans" when referring to people from the United States. Just incase it's new to you...the Americas are two continents with many countries, who are all technically "American." So please clarify what you mean by "American" when making such a large generalization. Thanks
@Marques
I agree with you, we're not the only American's. The problem is, what do people living in the US call themselves. United States of Americans? I'm not sure but, I have broken the habit of saying that I live in America when I really mean the US.
Well, being one of those states-rights sorta hailers-from-these-United-States-of-America, I call myself a Hoosier. But I sometimes use "Yankee" when in an especially inclusive mood, and I've been known to answer to "Damn Yank"... I'll let you guess what answer, though.
@DDUB
I call myself a US-American.
A few of you above me are idiots. No one from Mexico, Canada, Brazil, Chile, or Venezuela, to name a few countries in the Americas, call themselves Americans. In fact, people from these countries call people who live in the United States Americans, as well. Spanish has the word "estadounidense" for people from the United States, but "americano/a" is used waaaaay more. It's just common nomenclature, not an expression of the United States' dominance.
*In best hillbilly voice*
If you don't like it you can GIT OUT! They took our jobs!
Hey in halo does the warthog have the steering wheel on the other side if you bought the game in England?
Everything in england is backwards as a matter of fact, due to the electric frequency computers render everything in reverse so therefore game companies compensate by flipping the screen. Also , in first person shooters such as Halo, the game controller is automatically configured to Southpaw.
I'd prefer to see a Sledge-O-Matic tear-down of the 3G iPhone.
Will it blend?
Stop bitching and use this.

Damn, the world must be coming to an end. The useless and overpriced IPhone comes riding on the clouds to cast judgment on the poor folks who have failed to see the light. Separating the Apple saints from the sinners, Apple declares it's 1,000 year rein on earth. What a crock. Once again we have to put up with Apple's grand marketing scam; and sadly, Engadget is playing right along. Come on guys and gals, give your readers a little balance here, please. (Ducks my head to avoid the lightning strike coming my way).
Stop bitching and use this.

Useless? Far from it. Overpriced? What phone isn't?
Is the iPhone perfect? Is it a God? NO. It's not.
But, gee - how many have attempted to imitate it? People want this phone, they want the touchscreen capabilities, they want the screen size, they want the storage size, they want the full browsing capabilities.
However, yes - not everyone bows down before the iPhone.
I like the part where it says "Do not remo..."
Non soldered battery inside...replaceable ?
and easier repairable screen/glass panel.
wheres the keyboard?
It's connected to your PC
Seems it might be time to stop visiting engadget a week - or three.
With you bro this place reaks of fruity fan boy. Do you know of any other cool "gadget" oriented site? Im defenetly leaving even though ive been a loyal visitor for over a year.
Remeber second best they are!

I meant it in a more practical sense, clearly they will be all over that iphone for a while and it'll be annoying if you aren't into apple's crap, but then it'll subside again to your normal volume of apple items.
Just a matter of waiting it out if it annoys you.
2 words: HTC Diamond.
And Zak thanks for the link
Wow, that's a whole lotta stuff!
Looks like at least one Skyworks chip inside...
Yeah, but the one to worry about is the Skynet chip on the top right. /shudder
Great, now that I've seen what she looks like without her clothes I have nothing left to the imagination....=0)
rofl. at least you'd know how she happens to do what she does.. and do it so well.
wat a waste of time. engadget is getting worst day by day. god damn it, look at the front page, its filled up with apple posts. anybody visiting this blog might misunderstand it for a apple fanboy blog. wat? R u guys being paid for covering apple products? one one hand you're dissing phones like iPaq, jst caz you personally dont like it. i personally am a sony ericsson fan but would never like such kinda an overkill coverage for any of their phones either. and this iPhone, its just an overpriced phone so stop this non-sense Plz and start posting abt other happenings in the gadgets world. and all you iPhone fans out there, get a life, the world has alot more gadgets than this iPhone. Plz get outta ur parent's basement ASAP and see a doctor if you're playing with ur self while watching this iPhone 3G coverage like the rest of the enhadget team.
- a loyal engadget fan from Pakistan.
Maybe the reason it has so many apple iphone "fan " post is because the iphone 3g is going to be released tommorow....and technically has been released in other parts of the world today... just a thought. If you don't like all the apple post your always free to go to gizmodo. They have a non apple iphone 3g post section.
Abbas: First, learn to spell. Second, stop bitching and use this.

Amen brother, or whicher closing religous comment you prefer.
On this....A circuit board...okayyyyy. How bout an article with all the great "innovation" the 3G has over the original. Well...there isnt all that much, its an upgrade that isnt groundbreaking. 3G, horray. Overpriced? yea. Its not the bombshell that the original was in terms of its impact. And I agree POST ON OTHER GADGETS! The world is full of interesting tech. I see at least 4-5 stories a day now on the Iphone...My God! Sorry for the rant, but get of the bandwagon please. I wish the founder of this great site could see how you ripping his site apart.
That guy's nails are gross, but then again he's from the land down under.
He'd be bawling if he saw you...
Damn! I think that ocean dude has some shield that protects him from replies!
Indeed he does, but I snuck one under...
Web Dev Extension FTW!
I know this is slightly off topic, but I would be interested in finding out how early people have to get to the store to secure one as it goes on sale throughout the world... I'm planning on getting one tomorrow, and don't want to sit outside for hours if I can just as easily stroll in at 8 with one in hand.
Is Jobs still alive and well? Or is this iPhone his voodoo doll?
That sounds like the premise for a crappy movie... I must call Michael Bay right away!
You guys are pretty brave given Apples habit of including toxic chemicals in their products
Um... I'm pretty sure there isn't like cadmium or anything just sorta sitting there inside the phone.
I'm equally as sure that someone would notice if they were using it to store a nerve agent.
I'm equally as sure that there is a boat somewhere throwing things at a drilling platform that is really missing you.
what is this "like cadmium"?
+1 matt
geez... lighten up, hippie
I think there's something wrong with the DNS servers, I keep typing engadget.com, but I'm getting tuaw.com ... weird.

@engadget
can we please get a post very similar to -http://www.engadget.com/2007/06/20/tired-of-iphone-and-or-apple-news-on-engadget/ - but where we can talk about how tired we are of this Zak character constantly posting the same stupid post, over and over again?
Zak, why do you care? Your posts are actually more mundane and pointless than theirs are lol.
Looking at your comment history, you posted the same response to eight people in a row, lol. Slightly pathetic really.
Zak is one of the reasons why the "Tired of iPhone and/or Apple news on Engadget?" forum exists.
Zak is one of the reasons why the "Tired of iPhone and/or Apple news on Engadget?" forum exists.
It's very simple. Either you're genuinely interested in reading Engadget without so much Apple news, in which case that link will help you - or you're a troll. If you choose to ignore that link, then you're bitching just to hear yourself bitch. Which is why I said stop bitching.
You can hate Apple on your own time, some of us are interested in reading about this stuff. If you're not, I provided you with a perfectly usable solution. If you're just going to bitch, I'm going to tell you to STFU. And while it's flattering that you think that filter was created in part because of me, it existed before I started posting here.
I never ever thought I would buy an iPhone but all the reviews I'm reading seem ecstatic.
Even the 2 miserable Mpix cam gets good press.
Could this chunck of glass & plastic actually be worth some of my cash?
I guess I'll give another couple of month to the Xperia to turn out or for Samsung &LG to surprise me, otherways seems like I'll have to eat some humble pie and head toward Cupertino.
SJWBUihst?
What's With Your capitalization, clak?
Indeed, ocean-not-clak has an anti-reply shield. How does he do that?
How does liking an iPhone have anything to do with living in your mothers basement?
Plus we have no basements here in Miami....when we dig holes in the ground they become swimming pools.
I read the title and I was hoping that this would be just be an excuse to rip on fruity fanbois... Oh well, seeing their over-hyped gadget being torn board-from-screen was nearly solace enough.
If they can't get it back together and functioning, you think they would sell me the parts, I wanna make a necklace that will piss off the sheep!
Love,
B~
wheres the battery!!!! i know this nice peice of hardware isn't solar powered!
SJWBUihst?
What's With Your capitalization, clak?
@zAK post #50
dude, i can spel however i want. Stop criticizing comments here, comments are supposed to be used to give one's thoughts abt the posted story,
2ndly, it jst makes you look like an idiot if you're trying to act smart by finding spell mistakes in others' posts.
3rdly, i'm not freaking applying for an online interview to teach in some grammar school so i can spell whatever the f i want to spell.
4thly, i'm not gonna use any filters on engadget to get rid of apple posts, i want engadget team to act and post normally abt apple products just like gizmodo etc. these guys look much better when they post professionally. so i hate it when they post stuff abt apple products acting like hippie fanboys.
And lastly, i'm posting from a fan so no spell checks you f ing spell nerd, get a life loser
"spell nerd"?!
That is awesome! Sounds like a class in a video game.
Jim: "I'm a scout"
John: "I'm a warrior"
Zak: "I'm a spell nerd"
You sound like a complete idiot in that post, and also, you can't be a loyal engadget lover if you Gizmodo 'professional'. Insanity...
Abbas - You fail. Your spelling is so bad that you're undermining your own attempt to troll. The written word is our communication medium, and when you don't take it seriously, nobody will take you seriously. Maybe you'll figure that out someday.
As far as the filter, you can either use it or you can STFU. If you refuse to use the filter, then you're just here to troll because you like the attention, probably because you're a pre-pubescent emo prick. And please note that if you had anything constructive to say, I wouldn't even be responding to you unless I had something else constructive to add. Suffice it to say that you're not adding anything constructive.
So use the filter, that way you don't have to read the Apple news and we won't have the pleasure of being subjected to your defecation of the English language.
jajaja what a loser, English is no my first language and still I spell better than you. And I know what you are going to replay, so save it. I won't read it or understand it.
@daza, if he's from India why does the USA get the blame? you must work for the UN....and oh yeah we pay 90% of the world's bills so I don't want to hear the anti-USA rants again from you deal? deal...I would shake your hand but I think you're nails are dirtier than the poster's.....
The US pays 90% of the worlds bills, does it? You do realise that the US has a debt of over $9trillion right? Which steadily increase with each annual budget deficit. So, in short, the US isn't even paying it's own bills, never mind 90% of everyone elses. In fact, the US is constantly borrowing more and more each year, averaging out at about $300bn more each year.
While I understand that every country is the same (in that they are all in debt), the US is not in a great position with regards to it's own national debts.
So try being less ignorant in the future, it doesn't make you look good or smart in anyway.
Why are you people griping about iphone posts? i may get one, I may not. but the point is, in the tech world this is a pretty big deal so suck it up and just don't read if you don't want to....
(ps, I use only Windows and Blackberrys and WINMO phones so don't think I'm a fanboy posting it...I'm anti-apple, but this is a big step for the wireless world)
