Jobs: App Store launching with 500 iPhone applications, 25% free
Steve Jobs told USA Today that the Apple App Store will launch with "more than 500" applications Thursday night for the iPhone and iPod touch. Of these, 25% will be free and 90% (of those for sale) will cost $9.99 or less. "This is the biggest launch of my career," said Jobs. Analyst Tim Bajarin at Creative Strategies said, "When IBM introduced the PC, it was good, but it didn't take off until people started discovering the software." It's these apps then, he adds, that will "dramatically differentiates the iPhone" from Treos and BlackBerrys. Indeed, while consumers are focused on the launch of the iPhone 3G device, it's the App Store which has analysts in such a tizzy.
Update: The New York Times reports that 1/3 of all first-wave applications will be games. We also corrected the Bajarin misquote above.

[Thanks, Matt and Chris Z.]

Yeah. Not really looking for games from the iPhone. Especially since it means I'll have to recharge it much sooner.
So does anyone know how this exchanges to other currencies?
example:
is it $9.99 = £9.99, or more of a reflection of the current exchange rate (with leeway) like $9.99 = £5.99 / £6.99...
Wow. 90% of you guys suck at math. It is quite apparent that you are all gadget nerds, and not real nerds.
I've found some quality apps just looking about, must've downloaded about 30, can't wait to see what this iPhone fuss is about come this time tomorrow :)
Twitter or facebook clients aren't applications, they are gadgets (or widgets), like weather or rss gadgets. In other words, I don't consider something that a 15-year old nerd (in the best sense of the word) can whip up in a Saturday afternoon an application. Especially not when considering I might have to pay for it. This means that the apple store will actually have more like 20 applications.
I wonder what percentage of apps are iPhone only and what percentage can also be used on the Touch. We have no 3G here so the iPhone is a pointless expense. The Touch on the other hand...
anybody know if putty is gonna be one of those apps? I'd pay for that.
For those who are a little slow with math word problems, here are the numbers:
There are roughly 500 apps.
25% of total 500 apps are free, so about 125 apps are free.
Which means 375 apps remain. These are the apps that cost money. Take deep breath.
90% of these apps are $9.99 or under.
Which means about 337 of the 365 cost $9.99 or less
Which means the remaining 10%, about 37, cost $10 or more.
Class over.
Here is a great article about the launch of iPhone 3G and its origins.
