Apple fesses up to MobileMe transition difficulties
It doesn't take a genius to figure out that there's something wrong with Apple's MobileMe transition -- which was originally scheduled to take place Wednesday evening. Now, into the early hours of Friday, and almost a day after the iPhone 3G's launch in NZ, we've seen maybe a total of 30 minutes of scattered uptime for the service, and Apple is finally confessing that the transition is "taking longer than expected." The good news is that .Mac users should still be able to check their mail, sync their contacts and use their iDisks, but at the moment there's no telling when MobileMe's sexy new web apps will be available, or what to expect next as far as those other services.
Update: For what it's worth, MobileMe is up again -- now with working email and new "Getting Started" tours which we haven't seen before. Looks promising but we'll need to give it a few hours to burn-in. Screenshot after the break.
Update 2: And by "up" we meant "not up," of course. Get it right, people.
[Thanks, Alec A]

I'm kinda hoping this isn't a sign of things to come with the new Me.com.
Heavens knows it wasn't too wonderful under the Mac.com moniker.
:(
When is it going to work without going down again....?
Once its running without goind down, reply to my comment, and I will sign-up !
back up for now...hehe
everything seems to work fine, but slow. also if you have calendar subscriptions didn't work for me. there's a show birthday calendar in pref panel, but that doesnt seem to work either. i'll cut apple some slack today. but just for today!
I was so excited for it to be working this morning. It lasted a total of 30 seconds on me and now is down again anytime i try to reload it. So i would say no it's not really "up" again. It's still like yesterday.
Web system times out all the time. My big questions is, Has anyone been able to access the extra 10GB of storage that they are supposed to be giving us. Under syncing pref if is not showing up.
Yup, my extra 10 GB appeared this morning.
It's a huge launch. It's bound to have a few problems. I'm a developer, and I understand the pressure that they are in right now. I'll give it a few days before it becomes stable. One interesting note. I had a trial account with .mac before. And I created a new trial account on the same name this morning with .me. So it seems they don't port the .mac trial account names over.
Huh. Must use the same backend as Twitter.
I signed up for Mobile Me yesterday during a brief period when sign-up was available. Today I tried my first sync with my Outlook calendar. What a disaster!!! Some appointments have been deleted in Outlook (*Great!*), and the web app won't load the calendar properly (I get an error message saying the server can't load a calendar). In spite of the error message, I can view (but not change or add) calendar entries - all of which have been moved backwards 3 hours as if the time zone has changed to west coast (even though 'enable support for time zones' was not selected). What a mess....
after being told that my .mac username did not exist, not being allowed to create the username because it does exist according to the sign up page, then creating a new account and providing a credit card number, i was presented with this:
" MobileMe is temporarily unavailable.
We're working hard to restore normal service. Check back soon! "
how is this different/better than gmail and google calendar (and the rest of the google suite), which sync with all the mac apps?
(this is a serious question, not sarcastic)
I use macs everyday, I have a dotmac subscription. I like Apple, I really do, and most of the time they do a pretty good job. But .mac has always been a heap, and mobileme is shaping up to be a catastrophe. I had a lot of hope for mobileme, but Apple really messed up this time.
You would think they wouldn't have done it around the same time as the 3G launch. My "old" iPhone was bricked this morning with everyone else's when I tried to update it and Apple's servers were eating it.
The news has been hot lately with concerns over who will replace Steve Jobs when he leaves, I wonder if Steve Ballmar already did. Judging by Apple's progress this week, that would be my guess.
I love it. Apple is failing all over the place this week! Steve-O is going to roll some heads when this is all over.
ok.. so its up now and running pretty good... bit laggy from time to time but its better than nothing... only problem I have is I cant find the button to share my files in iDisk, just the download button... I'm in Colombia so i guess it should be working better for people in US....
I *do* so try to stay abreast of popular culture (not really), but I'm afraid I missed the genesis of the current trend of replacing a noun - or in this case a pronoun - with the verb "fail"; as in "Mobile Fail." From what I've read, this simple transformation is widely considered the zenith of wit, and I should like to incorporate it felicitously into my daily patois.
Reid@1:38 AM, you sound as if you're "in the know" -- would you summarize the origin of the mannerism?
Very truly yours,

Why can't I find any software for my Macs? I can't use the right button on my mouse. And I miss Microsoft Office since I left Windows. Also all the peripherals are so expensive. I have to buy the Apple mice, monitors, routers, etc. I can't print because Apple doesn't make a printer anymore. I had to buy Apple TV so I could use my TV. My Macs cost me ten times as much as a comparable Windows Machine. For example, I looked at a 15" Dell laptop that was $199 compared to my $2000 MacBook Pro. Then Apple Makes me buy dot Mac for $100 and then another $100 for this Mobile Me so I can use my iPhone.
