iPhone activation servers back online; stock updates from around the world

Update: Most AT&T stores are out of stock -- if you must have an iPhone today, it looks like an Apple store is the only way to go. Have fun in line!
Update 2: You guys are amazing -- keep those updates coming in! Right now it looks like the best place to nab an iPhone is Brandon Mall, in Tampa, Florida: plenty of stock and only 20 people in line. Who's up for a road trip? So much for that -- see below.
Update 3: It looks like Apple is starting to cap lines so that stores can close by midnight or so. How crazy will it be if there are four hour lines for this thing again tomorrow? Keep those updates coming!
Final update for the night: Apple's capping lines so that most stores can close by 11, or midnight at the latest. We'll do this all again tomorrow, thanks for all your help!

Congratulations Jeremiah Martin! You've just opened yourself up to prank phone calls, cell phone ghosting, and potential ID theft!

Ryan @ Jul 11th 2008 5:18PM
wonder if the apple fanboys beat up the guy in line that is clearly using a dell laptop...
TMM @ Jul 12th 2008 3:03AM
No, not necessary.
He has a Dell Laptop, that's enough beating.
If he's got Vista on, they should even all hug him and say something supportive, maybe give him a cookie, too.
nicksa7xx @ Jul 11th 2008 4:33PM
what about the ipod touch?
Viakenny @ Jul 11th 2008 6:57PM

Hey Engadget, Thanks a lot for the Chicago Suburb update. People don't usually put the suburb stores, and this'll help my bro.

Wormbolt-
Yes I agree... I don't know why people were complaining so much when Apple Servers went down... It was down for only 5 - 6 hours.... Less than a day... Not a big deal... Now there servers are back up, people can stop complaining!
Christian Martin @ Jul 11th 2008 10:47PM
@ Sam Stone
No, it's a reference to something that's actually useful.
That or it's a reference to Carmageddon II: Carpocalypse Now (which is also useful)

I don't think so Just came back from the Grove with no iPhone 3G. 700 people in line @ an estimated 3-4 hours wait time. Line not moving. Activations causing problems.
David @ Jul 11th 2008 4:36PM
Belgium: all of the 148 mobistar stores and 30 apple premium retail stores are out of stock. How you may wonder?, every single store only got 15 iPhones in stock!!!!
Tamerlane @ Jul 12th 2008 6:25PM
Same problem here in the Netherlands: 1000 iPhones FOR THE WHOLE COUNTRY! Bastards! I had to wait in line for three hours, they had helped about two dozen people by then, and they had already sold out the white one.
Billy Tcherno @ Jul 12th 2008 8:46AM
Ahum... *some* stores had >10 units. The local Mobistar store I checked out only had 3 (2 Black 8GB, and 1 White 16GB). Word was out that Black 16GB would be hard to get in the coming days. Some Apple Premium Resellers did not get their shipment in time, and in general had far fewer units at hand than the Mobistar shops. At the flagshipstore 6000 people signed up to get one of the 300 available units.
Some stores created (illegally) waiting/reservation lists; some with >200 people registered knowing that some stores will only get 9 units/week delivered - that's a long wait.
Official complaints are made for bundled sales (illegal in Belgium), with existing mobistar customers getting prioritised, and some stores not wanting to sell to people not taking a mobile subscription (illegal!). Mobistar now states that Apple is at fault for low # shipments.
No word on new shipments/availability
portwineboy @ Jul 11th 2008 4:38PM
Ipod touch is a no go. Still reports 1.1.4
having a problem posting, so hope this doesn't appear 3x
petecuba @ Jul 11th 2008 4:39PM
I am glad that new customers are finally being helped out and able to use their products, but when am I finally going to be able to update my ipod touch? I'm not getting an error message anymore, but I am getting an update button that ignores me.
James @ Jul 11th 2008 4:39PM
Um, NYC Chicago and SF don't constitute 'the world'...
Superstition @ Jul 11th 2008 4:41PM
Exactly what I was thinking. Letting us know the massive Apple markets are not out of stock doesn't help us country bumpkins.
chuck @ Jul 11th 2008 4:45PM
Hahah totally true...they really didn't need to include Chicago or SF
diulei @ Jul 11th 2008 4:44PM
I am assuming they'll update as news rolls in slowly... don't get your panties in a bunch.
CUBSWILLWIN @ Jul 11th 2008 4:47PM
Why the hell woudn't they need Chicago. It's a major city.
johnsson @ Jul 11th 2008 4:39PM
waiting in 3 hour lines to get a damned phone is the absolute opposite of having a "jedi way" lifestyle
XxDonnyxX @ Jul 11th 2008 4:41PM
Anyone have a direct link to the 2.0 firmware for the 1st gen phones? Not the "early" versions from yesterday. But what people are getting from iTunes today.
I installed an early version and my wi-fi is jacked now. And I tried to rollback to 1.4 and now Im semi-brinked. :o\
johnsonn @ Jul 11th 2008 4:41PM

Oskin @ Jul 13th 2008 2:44AM
They had 28 and my local AT&T Store and I live in a small town... The thing is they had 4 iPhones for and upgrade and the rest for new customers!
Jim @ Jul 11th 2008 4:42PM
From Milwaukee: I waited from 7:30 (I was about 40th in line) until a little after noon to get into the Apple Store at the mall near me. After the info taking and a few attempts at activation, it finally worked and I was out the door at about 12:45. Now I'm just waiting for the number to port over (I can make outgoing but don't receive incoming yet).
Man, it was a frakin' circus this morning!!! I think the first 20 people were in the store for at least an hour if not longer. After that 2 or 3 people would trickle (and I mean a t...r...i...c...k...l...e...) in maybe every 10-15 minutes. I did not anticipate the demand nor the technical SNAFUs at all. The Apple employees were very, very nice and patient with the line. I was impressed.

I have called 7 AT&T stores in Los Angeles and they are sold out. I haven't tried the Apple Store in Brea yet.
I was told that they would be receiving another shipment tomorrow.
Joshua.JWilliams @ Jul 11th 2008 4:42PM
Amazing how in a slumping economy and well over $4 a gallon for gas that people can go ahead and just waste their time waiting this long in line, not to mention it's price and crazy contract.
4.5 hour battery life? Ugh - you've got to be kidding me. 3G coverage spotty at best. The outside technology really needs to mature to be charging prices like this. It's not so much the $199 hardware price, but the insane idea that you HAVE to use AT&T and you're stuck with very little flexibility.
Beast @ Jul 11th 2008 4:46PM
Truf....we shallent let the terrorist win.

Funny how every story on the iphone release and updates has an immediate post from someone saying "what about the ipod touch?"
I think its safe to say that the iphone uers are in a little more of a situation right now than the music player users are. I mean, if your phone bricks you are in trouble - if your ipod doesn't update for a day, does life really take a hit?
n2thevoid @ Jul 11th 2008 5:25PM
Yes im an touch user and i want APPs!!!
alexloyal @ Jul 11th 2008 4:45PM
I was at the Lenox Store in Atlanta, line was impossible. I waited two hours from 8 to 10:30 but gave up and went to work. I came back at 2, my old spot had moved maybe 10 yards, with about 300-400 people in front.
Anyone know what the status on the stock is?
Joshua.JWilliams @ Jul 11th 2008 4:48PM
Are you kidding me? How does Apple hype this thing that much, it's not THAT different than the previous phone. Don't get me wrong, it's a cool little device, but is it worth sitting in line for --- for hours?
Travis @ Jul 11th 2008 6:12PM
Apple stock will be in the toilet after todays mess.
