iPhone Dev Team officially Pwns firmware 2.0 on video
You saw this coming right? With barely even 24 hours of 2.0 in our life, the Dev Team has once again cracked the case wide open. They've got a video of all the action -- featuring the upcoming PwnageTool 2.0 -- that just went live on their site, so hit the read link and check it out for yourself... you won't be disappointed.
Update: It's looking like the video isn't functioning right now -- we're looking for a mirror and will let you know when we find it.
Update 2: Video is up after the break! Just do it.
[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Yeah, we saw this already. Report back when its actually out.
You're looking for a mirror, Engadget? When you find it, look deep and long into it and ask yourself "How much iPhone coverage is too much?"
Kidding, schweet. When does this come PC-side?
lol patience...
pause at exactly 1:48
it says "sry, I haz fail" "failed to start pwning on your iphone"
just cuz he didnt want to or did it not work?
nah, it works.
ahhh,,,,some actual news
Won't be released this weekend!!!! So tempted to upgrade now to 3g now, patiently waiting for apps on my 1st gen iphone with rogers!!!!
Good work dev's, but please release asap!
Wait, are you saying that you want to upgrade to 3G just by installing 2.0 on your first generation iPhone?
No, he's saying that he's going to just upgrade the software on his original iPhone, but that he's still tempted to get the new one.
I think.
Well the Dev Team jailbroke the 2.0 Beta months ago so it was pretty obvious that they were going to quickly jailbreak the final version.
Actually, starting in 2.0 beta 4 (build 5a258f), Apple changed the format of the 2.0 firmware from IMG2/8900 to IMG3. This is the main reason why it takes longer to upgrade to version 2.0, because the O.S partition is reformatted to IMG3.
Luckily, the Dev Team found a jailbreak method for IMG3. Props to them for their great success.

and if the crazy and totally hypothetical idea that i was disappointed happened. should i mention it?
whats it pwn now that 3rd party apps are allowed? Does it just unlock it
3rd party apps are still only allowed through the app store after first passing some sort of screening by apple. I.e. you will most likely not see many "community" type applications there.
official apps are crappy at best
no VNC client is a deal killer to upgrade, no MSN also is (who still usees AIM these days?)
i'll stick with 1.1.4 and usefull apps instead of 2.0 without any usefull aps (don't tell me a myspace app is usefull please lol)
Why?

I love Pwnage! Good job guys.
Hey Mr. Jobs - Don't you hate the Dev Team (again)?
There is a reason it's called "Soft"ware

Nista Novo
ok I don't understand Croatian :)
what has just been said in the last two posts? :) just curious
Pwnage...what an ironic name.
Lots of Pwned iPhone and iPod users today.
Got beat to it i see but here it is anyways :) no point wasting the effort. And for whoever is asking why Pwn it? How about great apps that are not Apple approved? (mms anyone?)
C'mon guys, hurry up and release it! Video now on utube btw http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HwKGiLnu7EU
Haha, funny... Jim, why don't you have a look at this: http://www.engadget.com/2008/07/11/iphone-dev-team-officially-pwns-firmware-2-0-on-video/comments/13123073/
Youtube deleted my video... curious.
Sorry but HANG THE F*CK ON!
This does not show anything related to running 2.0 on old phones. WTF Devtea!?
That's not what it does. The new firmware can run on the old phones anyway, this just lets you run your own code on the new firmware.
Your grammer is atrocious!
yeeeaaahh...and that is spelled GRAMMAR by the way, with an A. if you're going to correct someone's grammar at least do it properly.
Well, it was just a matter of time. Now if this thing works, and I can unlock that 3G stuff, I am seeing a Good Birthday Gift for my Dad. Thank Dev Team. Now Apple, back to Drawing Board :)
Correct me if I'm wrong, but haven't they done this already many eons ago, even before iPhone 2.0 was officially released?
this is just to show the new software to do it yes we all know the dev team JB 2.0 (or depending on who you ask 1.2) eons ago
Will an unlocked iphone 3g work on t-mobile? 3G? Does t-mobile have 3G? If t-mobile does, can I just buy a 3G data plan on my current SIM and put it in the unlocked iPhone? Answers are appreciated. Thanks
You will be able to use the phone on T-Mobile's network. And T-Mobile will be releasing a 3G network, but it will run on a different frequency than what is supported by the phone.
So.. yes and no.
@ brianjg
Oh, my God, w@tch the l@ngu@ge.
I've uploaded it to youtube - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WhwJJ1h5FsI
(it might be still processing)
I am mad that it is not being released this weekend but whatever.
Here is a youtube link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-xzNoBX4J54
Anyone actually watch the video? It fails at the end. Does that count as pwning?
It's all to clever for me. I suspect it's all supposed to be some kind of very geeky joke - but I'm not ashamed to say I just don't get it.
Just looks like a timeout to me, it keeps asking to connect the device, then the error pops up after a while.
The more I watch this video the more I think it is just a sick joke from the devteam. Remember the April Fool's sellout hoax?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ldbyi_FXitE
Obviously anyone offering praise for actually cracking 2.0 hasn't actually watched the video... it's a joke folks... now laugh at yourself for thinking it was actually true for a few minutes...
Is it possible to buy iPhone without activation? So I could use it elswere and pay only for the phone?
nope
Yes. If you have $599. (for the 8gb)
If you got lucky this morning it was, I understand they had to send some people home without activating because of the servers being down.
Let me know how to pwn AT&T or Apple into selling me an iPhone without activating it in store so I don't have to sign 2 years of my life to AT&T.
Why in the hell does it have multi-continent 3G support when they ball-and-chain you to AT&T?!?
Congratulations! You've been classified as:
A COMPLETE IDIOT
Do it again and the title stays with you... forever!
It may look as if I'm mad, but I'm not. At least, not that I know of. I think. Maybe.
This "pwnage" is meaningless, since you have to activate in-store anyway. And if you cancel your contract, you have to return your phone.
So there's no way around having to sign an AT&T contract if you want to buy an iPhone in America. Even the Dev Team can't fix that problem.
Actually, this is huge if you want to use your iPhone outside the US without paying AT&T's roaming fees by buying a prepaid SIM from a local carrier. I do this every time I go abroad.
Yeah, this could be true for 3G users, but what about the lucky first gen iPhone users that upgraded to 2.0? This can still be beneficial to them. Stop being so angry.
No way! You have to return your phone?!?! Don't they just charge you for breaking the contract?
Hey everyone, I jailbroke the new iphone 2.0 software on release day...
Don't believe, watch this video I made of a program that is unavailable, and shows nothing more then me selecting stuff within a program...
Go me.
I know someone will help me for asking this. But what in the hell does PWNAGE mean?
See wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pwned
It's an acronym:
People
Want
No
Assholes
Going to
Engadget
Um, why did you tag this "Braking" and "BrakingNews"? Did the Dev Team develop iPhone anti-lock brakes or something?
Stupid ginger, I HATE YOUR FACE.
What i did to your mom, is the perfect definition of pwnage .... I'm joking... but in the iPhone term of pwnage it closely resembles the words, I crack that Sh*T, or you just say the phone is OWNED!! with the word ouch at the end......
Looks like only a couple people actually watched this video, and the author of the post isn't included in that.
** Nothing about this video does anything related to iPhone 2.0 software.
** The "upgrade" fails anyway. If you watch to the end, it's a complete failure.
Maybe people ought to read/watch the material being referenced before making postings like this. This was a total waste of time; I want my 5 minutes back.
they have released a video of a jailbroken 2.0 with appstore AND cydia running on it:
http://www.vimeo.com/1326377
I thought you could buy the phone outright for like $599 or something...i remeber reading it here or on BGR
....LOL!
I got the joke!
wow, i guess no one stayed long enough to see the credits
Hey, does anyone know if its possible to backup the files already in the phone!? I have a first gen and i wouldnt like to lose the SMS etc.
Yeah, get Syphone and back that shit up!
I love the song Dev Team chose for the video... Here's the original video of the song...

Jail breaking and unlocking doesn't matter to Apple anymore. It's a non-issue.
For iPhone v1.0, Apple sold the device to AT&T (and everyone else) at a discount, and in turn Apple took a cut of the subscription revenue to make up the difference. This was all to improve the experience of buying an iPhone (buy at the Apple Store, activate at home, etc.). But if someone buys an iPhone at the discounted price, unlocks it and uses it on another network, Apple loses money, and apparently there are hundreds of thousands of unlocked iPhones in operation around the world, all sold at a loss to Apple.
For iPhone v2.0 Apple uses the traditional cell phone model (which makes for a much lousier purchase experience) They sell to AT&T for FULL price, AT&T is then responsible for subsidizing the consumer price and recouping the difference with the contract. As a result, you simply cannot get an iPhone 3G without selling your soul to AT&T first. If the iPhone is unlocked after that point it really makes no difference (to Apple, at least).
It will be interesting when 2.0 is jailbroken. People will copy apps from the app store off their phones, and they will be put on Installer repos. Then all apps will be free. App store profits = fail.
Joshua Topolsky, this post's "BreakingNews" tag is misspelled. ("Braking")
Just thought you might wanna fix it so it comes up with all the other Breaking News.
Feel free to delete this once it's been fixed.
Whoops, someone already mentioned it. My bad.
I don't think this will have as much of an impact as some people say.
1; I have no confirmation of this, but i THINK that the ppl who was sent home without activated phones won nothing; I don't think the process is as you yanks are used to. Here in Ireland, for example, the first gen iPhones were sold only in O2 stores and Carphone Warehouse, also pretty big retailer. They were not sold with a sim in-box, but you had to buy one with the phone. So, in order to even get a phone you signed and activated a plan straight up. You then went home and still had to activate the phone with an O2 sim in it. Some of my mates did that with an O2 pay-as-you go card, but there is not really much point in that - you can not get around the plan as it is already activated.
2; I think there is quite a lot of security around the apps in the store. Even if there is not, and they end up in the installer, how many people of all the millions of customers do you think, realistically does this?
It does infringe copyright, your warranty etc. People don't like that. Furthermore, the same way as it has been hard finding NES roms on a repo, it will be way harder to find these - Apple will not hesitate to hunt them down.
In a way it is like the ITMS. it is very possible, and very easy to get music illegally, that is not even DRM-infested. Still, business is good for Apple. Why shouldn't this be?
3; It is uncertain when this comes. As much as i trust the dev teams efforts, the video does not show any iphone 2.0 action. Only some fiddling around withvarious things you can do to 1.1.4. I must admit that that looks very sweet, and i look forward to playing with that when 2.0 is woriking, but at the moment i see no reason to believe they have it working. They may be close, but there is not proof in this video except for the icons.
And when is it actually going to release........???
iPhone Dev Team are legends
Just updated my 1.1.4 to 2.0 (stupid me). was not even able to restore the old 1.1.4 again. Now I use my old Sony Ericsson until the jailbreak is out ;-(....I'ts really hard to go back to these stoneage mobiles.
Really hope it is released soon. please please please
You can buy a simlock free 8GB iPhone in Belgium for 525 EURO and a 16GB for 625 EURO or something. It is forbidden by law to bundle phones with contracts in Belgium. For Europeans, that is a pretty good deal. Obviously, for US citizens, it becomes rather expensive. But it is possible.
no offense, but why would people help you buy your own iPhone...we all have to spend the money ourselves, you can too. No need to beg other people to give you their hard earned money
