iTunes activation servers go down, iPhone 3G customers being sent home unactivated, first-gen iPhone customers stuck with dead iPhones

Update: Apple has confirmed to us that activation is down, and that customers are being asked to take the phone home and activate via iTunes later. We're not sure what good that'll do, since the servers are down no matter where you are, but Apple says it's "working on a solution." In the meantime, it looks like the new SIM works in first-gen units, so at least upgraders aren't totally phone-deprived. Oh, and remember that updating a first-gen iPhone to 2.0 requires hitting the server as well, so if you haven't taken the plunge we'd say hold off until this all gets sorted.
Update 2: In related news, those updating their first-gen iPhone to 2.0 are also getting caught in the activation shuffle, leaving some with bricked iPhones. In our test case, the activation servers came back up after about 45 minutes just long enough to get 2.0 running on our first-gen iPhone, but not all have been so lucky. Is your first-gen iPhone stuck in activation limbo from the update? Let us know.

For those of you who are getting the "Your iPhone software is up to date" message with 1.1.4, you probably need to update iTunes first.
For the rest of us who got bricked by downloading the updater, try this, it worked for me:
Do Not press “OK” when the error message pops up in iTunes. Just plug your phone in and do not interact with iTunes until after the phone has been activated.

it's been bricked since 12:27 PM EST.
Saw the CBS evening news, they had the best iPocalypse.
upgrade my first gen early (last night).
today it appears to have frozen up or rebooted at least twice.
Once the screen went black with only an apple logo.
Once the unit appeared to go completed dead, refusing to start.
then when I plugged it into a computer via usb it came alive showing
battery half charged. I removed it from cable it it continued to run with battery showing half charged. I noticed the top half of the phone was warm compared to the bottom. Not hot... just warm. Never has acted like this before. Must be some bugs in the software. maybe instead of blue screens of death we will get the new black screen of apple....

Fortunately, I didn't try to update my 2G so I still have a working phone - when I can get a signal!
Any new ATT customers with a 3G able to Sync but NOT able to get signal? I currently get "No Service" even after sync and reboot.
Right now I feel like I'm stuck with a an iPod touch instead of a iPhone 3G... not sure if it's my SIM card (which is the one that as packed in) or whether its an issue on the ATT side.
Just got home from 8.5 hours at the apple store. They didn't even bother trying to activate my phone... Servers are down. This has to be the dumbest method to activate a phone ever. HTC this is your fault. Had you release the HTC Raphael I would have never purchased this iphone.
Im just gonna say this, but it might not be true.
iPhone (1st gen) users download the firmware and update, then activate(which requires servers) - right?
iPod Touch users have to buy the software(which requires the servers), then update their iPods - right?
Ok, so then: This would have gone smoother had Apple not charged for iPod updates.*
*I know they had to because of accounting.
But, since normal iPod updates only require the ipsw file to be downloaded, Apple could have fixed this.
Of course, this is only true if the "Activation/Buying server" is different than the server hosting the ipsw's.
Just my 2 cents...
I respect Apple. The iPhone is the awesome. However Apple has managed to engineer a DoS attack on themselves... One of the downsides of having a majority market share I guess. Since they have top to bottom control of the platform why isn't activation a bittorrent type distributed load type setup? Obviously they would have to make a deal with the service provider to not charge the custy for the data but hey how hard is that?
As a IT person of 20 years you people should know this many people can not pound a server like that. It WILL blow up! Get off your ass go play some basketball,baseball take a walk with out a cell phone. OMG I will die without it! My first gen iPhone is now a brick, and over three hours with Apple, both in the store, and online have only left me with a list of about 20 of the rudest Apple employees I have ever run into. I asked the store assistant manager if I missed the email saying if you are busy, it's all right to be rude. He said they didn't need an email message to say that. He was rude, obnoxious, and mean, and couldn't offer a way to solve the problem.
My Phone cannot be restored, and cannot be upgraded, and does not work. I even went through several levels of national support, and they were of no help. Guess where I won't spend my money again!
The problem is that they're running their activation servers on apple xservers.
I just finished updating successfully, got a message that the iPhone was restarting and everything looked great until…ALL OF MY PHOTOS, TEXT MESSAGES, EMAIL ACCOUNTS AND SETTINGS GONE. EVERYTHING!!! I am devistated. I want my old phone back. Everything was perfect and now I don’t know what to do. It’s a very sad day in my world.
I just activated my old iPhone to 2.0. Everything was fine. All music, video, contact, email account, TXT msgs... everything was kept. Just downloaded the Monkey Ball game. So much fun! LOL

My current iphone 3G and previous iphone have both shut themselves down and no longer operate. I am contacting apple and 02 tomorrow, you may think i have done something wrong, but i have not, i am on contract and since they released the apple 2.0 software with applications store, they have both crashed and no longer turn on at all. I cannot be the only one and this will hit Apple big!

I was trying to do a wipe & restore of my 1st-gen iPhone, and didn't realize this would trigger the activation process. The servers still appear to be borked, as I get an "unknown error (-4)" message, so I'm without a phone. Crap.
