'Official' iPhone firmware 2.0 now available for download, seriously, for real
So yesterday we posted a link to a version of the 2.0 iPhone firmware which was supposedly the release version of the new system software. After getting weirded out by some buggy behavior, then discovering that there were number differences between our version and the version shipping with new iPhone 3Gs, we got a little suspicious. Today, we noticed that the file which Apple made available for upgraders via iTunes sported a slimmer file size and separate designation (1,1 as opposed to the 1,2 of the previous iteration). The new version (supposedly the "official" version) is now available from Apple's servers -- so if you had any misgivings about that initial update, you can snag this and get a do-over. We've updated and restored on our phone, and we'll be honest -- it does seem a little bit snappier. Hit the read link for the file, and let us know if you notice any differences.

Let's hope. 1,2 is definitely a little buggy and laggy.
erik @ Jul 11th 2008 7:15PM
yay :)
It's amazing
CUBSWILLWIN @ Jul 11th 2008 9:07PM
Could someone please tell me if they tried the leaked ipod touch firmware 2.0. I have a copy but I don't wanna brick mine.
Diane @ Jul 11th 2008 7:12PM
yes it is a bit snappier.... after finally getting it!
Rob @ Jul 11th 2008 7:12PM
i still cant get it!
Im in NZ btw and trying to update my ipod touch
Evan @ Jul 11th 2008 7:18PM
good luck with that...
spyker @ Jul 11th 2008 7:35PM
You need to wait for it on the iTunes store. It's $10. Trust me, installing this WON'T WORK.
MrFairladyz @ Jul 11th 2008 9:09PM

A question for someone who might know: I have an unlocked phone, but with an AT&T sim in it ("pay as you go", I don't need a full contract as I don't use my phone much). In the past I needed to activate the iphone after upgrading the firmware, is this still necessary for AT&T sim iphones 2.0? You see, AT&T now sells pay-as-you-go iPhones, so how do these get activated? In other words, can I fool iTunes that my iPhone is one of these pay as you go AT&T compatible iphones, or do I still need to supply registration info that I don't have?
me @ Jul 11th 2008 7:38PM
I think I understand what you're trying to say - if so, here's the answer:
You need to wait for a jailbreak from the dev team. That will allow you to pop in the SIM from your PAYG phone into your iPhone without any problems.
Seth Porter @ Jul 11th 2008 10:20PM
For your other question, us AT&T pay as you go users got activated like this. First
1) I got the ATT rep to tell me that these plans were available before i bought the phone which was a challenge in itself.
2) Then I called the ATT activation department and they somehow changed my iphone activation page in itunes to the prepaid one. (secret menus or something?)
3) I chose my plan and texting options and had it billed to my credit card.
4) Authenticates with Apple's activation servers just like any other iphone.

Is it up for iPod Touch yet? I'm updating to iTunes 7.7 right now.
Timerider @ Jul 11th 2008 9:56PM
No, its not up yet. Apple really loves screwing with iPod touch owners. Delayed firmware and they're probably charging for it.
Dharun @ Jul 11th 2008 7:17PM
Is it out for iPod Touch yet? I'm currently in the process of updating to iTunes 7.7
Walter @ Jul 11th 2008 7:17PM
iPod Touch still doesn't work.
Bassir @ Jul 11th 2008 7:17PM
"Snappier"? Seriously, what's different between this and what was "released" yesterday?
Lori @ Jul 11th 2008 7:56PM
The other was for 3G iPhone, not 2G. This means it was looking for different hardware, hence the crashing of apps and the phone itself. It was the WRONG firmware.
mackycorp @ Jul 11th 2008 7:18PM
Not to sound like an idiot or something, but....where is it?
iTunes sends me to the store frontpage and now I can't find it.
steve @ Jul 11th 2008 7:17PM
rob, i cant get it too i have itunes 7.7 and i have an ipod touch the more info page never shows up...
Rob @ Jul 11th 2008 7:23PM
Yeah. I was up till 2am waitn
gave up n woke up at like 6am to get it and ive been tryn eva since!
It sucks
Apple shud jst fix the prob and every1 will b happy
Jamie M @ Jul 11th 2008 8:21PM
Rob....that's pretty lame. When all's said and done, it's a phone.
Le Master @ Jul 11th 2008 7:17PM
Gosh dammit. First thing I with the new firmware is send it a text. As the send is processing, I receive one from someone and it just vanishes. I had to tell them to resend it. I'm always receiving texts while sending one, this better be a one-time glitch.
Le Master @ Jul 11th 2008 7:19PM
I suck. Sorry for the typos.
First thing I do with the new firmware is send a text.*
Rick wilson @ Jul 11th 2008 7:19PM
How long does it take you to backup/restore you iphone when doing the F/W update? I did it on two completely different computers and the phone has about 600MB of stuff on it when nothing is synced (cause of the camera photos mostly) and it takes like 1 hr to backup and 2 hrs to restore... seems wrong.
1 computer was a Dell
1 computer was a home built gaming machine. Why does it take so long?
Le Master @ Jul 11th 2008 7:23PM
Yeah, Rick. I restored my settings with my new 3G and it took for-fucking-ever. I only had a few pictures and some texts too. This phone is really pissing me off at the moment.
CharlieX @ Jul 11th 2008 7:25PM
Must be a PC thing. Mine took maybe 15 minutes on a Mac laptop
CharlieX @ Jul 11th 2008 7:26PM
BTW, not knocking PC at all. Just commenting the Mac was pretty quick compared to what you're seeing
Le Master @ Jul 11th 2008 7:32PM
Charlie, when I restored my iPhone edge last night it took only a few minutes. The EXACT SAME restore's time was extended tenfold on the 3G.
Perhaps it has to do with the fact that it's not restoring the firmware, but only extracting the settings and data from the old f/w.
CharlieX @ Jul 11th 2008 8:01PM
OIC. OK, nevermind
jodosh @ Jul 11th 2008 8:30PM
been working on my upgrade for my original iphone for a little more than an hour now. (It is saying preparing iphone for restore) I am on a mac.
Greg Mardon @ Jul 11th 2008 7:19PM
I'm in canada with an iPod touch. It isn't working for me.
Side note: i bought the last firmware... why do I have to pay for another one?? This is complete garbage! If I had waited, I would have only had to buy one. (2.0 includes all the past firmwares). I think it is stupid. Something apple should not be doing.
/end rant
wood44 @ Jul 11th 2008 7:25PM
probably because of your internet, I have a dell inspiron 9300, and my iphone was updated in five minutes
mlvowell @ Jul 11th 2008 7:25PM
Has *anyone* gotten 2.0 on their iPod touch yet? I haven't heard of a single person...
Tom @ Jul 11th 2008 7:36PM
We have to buy that update. It's not going to be just available to download. Unfortunately, we have to wait for iTunes to get its act together. :(
Josh @ Jul 11th 2008 7:42PM
I found it online somewhere and it works well enough, it is a bit laggy at times though (mimicing the lag that the original iphone had in some situations) but overall it isn't half bad.
Exchange is a breeze to set up by the way...
tb @ Jul 11th 2008 7:47PM
the torrent will be available as soon as apple sells it to the 1st person(i really hope, otherwise i'll stick 1.1.4(jailbroken), i paid for it, i'm not paying again)
and pay for the crap apps? no way, i'll keep my free ones that works over the new shaky ones anytime, and they don't even have VNC available in the app store, pretty lame)
WheezerDoc @ Jul 11th 2008 10:01PM
ipod touch 2.0 is a no go.....
tried to update.....won't get to the buy screen.
Dharun @ Jul 11th 2008 7:30PM
...I found a link to download the iPod Touch 2.0 firmware....
mlvowell @ Jul 11th 2008 7:30PM
Ah, that would be because the touch firmware update isn't live yet. Wonder when that will be...
Ronnie Arnold @ Jul 11th 2008 7:31PM
I was able to get this new version from iTunes. Everyone needs to check their visual voicemail functions. They do not work. :-|
RyanJM27 @ Jul 11th 2008 7:38PM
My visual voicemail works fine. Running the new, official 2.0 software on orig. iPhone. Fyi.
mlvowell @ Jul 11th 2008 7:32PM
Does it do anything? The ones I've found look all promising, but don't do squat.
Jamie @ Jul 11th 2008 7:32PM
WTF. Downloaded, Extracting, Error, Now iPod is in recovery mode!
Dharun @ Jul 11th 2008 7:34PM
Did you update to iTunes 7.7?
Jamie @ Jul 11th 2008 7:34PM
Yes
Jamie @ Jul 11th 2008 7:38PM
I get the code error (5)
Dharun @ Jul 11th 2008 8:02PM
I got that before I updated to iTunes 7.7. But now it just hangs on the update anyway, so it's not going to work.
mlvowell @ Jul 11th 2008 7:34PM
I'm hitting the frackin' reply button, but it's post my stuff as new posts.
Cory Addison Clark @ Jul 12th 2008 12:12AM
yea, just tried on my iPod Touch.....no go

Spencer McManus @ Jul 11th 2008 7:38PM
