Sony Style is running a rather large teaser on its main page, featuring a quite distinctive power button and the blurb "Performance / Style / Mobility. Redefined." Hrm. We wonder what it could be?
Overpriced or not, Sony laptops are the best made laptops ive ever used.
I own the TZ Series (Very thin one), and its by far the best peice of electronics equipment i have ever used. It cost me a pretty funny ($3,000) for something not that powerful, but I paid for the portability, and thats what I got :D
btw that Green power button in that picture above is the side of the laptop, like the TZ Series, if some of you havne't noticed :)
As far as laptops go, I'd rather pay a pretty penny for one that's going to last me years (which my current VAIO has) than skimp on quality. Dell, Gateway, Toshiba, Apple... I've seen countless other notebooks crack or fall apart under normal use. Pretty much the most robust laptops I've dealt with are Thinkpads the upper-end VAIOs.
Plus with my VAIO, I don't look like a douche when I need to carry it around. ;)
When they first came out, they were overpriced. Now, they can spread the spectrum and I have actually bene surprised at their prices on the entry level.
I am still not a fan of Sony laptops though, to me, they are more style of functionality.
I am not sure if I can think of many laptops brands I would buy these days. I have a Toshiba and while I like it, it is impossible to take apart (tried to fix touchpad button) and I am not sure if I would buy one again. I have looked at HPs in the past, but again, not sure if they would be an option for me. The one laptop brand I really like now is Lenovo. I have been working with IBM/Lenovo Thinkpads for the past 3 years at work and these are some solid and functional laptops. In fact, I just received my R61 and currently working on installing gentoo on it, but so far so good.
Finally, its about time. Sony please leave off the VAIO X,Y,Z, A, B,C series. I wouldn't say Sony is overpriced, but there electronics tend to be a tad expensive. However, if you buy a Sony product expect to get a high level of quality, style and function.
I'm a Sony fanboy because i paid $3,000 for a laptop? Um... Okay bud, whatever you say there, you know me more then I do right?
When purchasing a laptop, I only cared about 1 thing, Portability. I didn't care at all about price, and comparing every notebook I saw, The TZ-Series Sony VAIO was the best by 'far', then any other portable notebook out there...
Sure I sacrifice power for portability, but its a laptop, I dont use it for video editing, i dont game, i write documents and browse the internet, i need something light, price is the last thing on my mind.

You wont look like a douche if you carry around an Inspiron XPS, Macbook Pro, Macbook, Macbook Air, or a Satellite L series either. You know what's funny, is that one of my close friends just bought the Sony SZ series, and the HD failed in 4 days after delivery. Another one of my friends has an iBook, way back from 2001...and its still chirping along just fine. Mind you its not fast by modern day standards, obviously, but just goes to show that generally speaking, the longetiveity of a laptop from a manufacturers standpoint can be subjective. For example, Apple's customer satisfaction level was the highest of all the other makers for a while now....and yet my Macbook Pro's MagSafe adapter failed on the 2nd week. What I'm saying is, you can't judge a company based JUST on their past track record, it also depends on the user also, and how well they handle their laptop.
Yes, I will be one of the ones who pays a lot for the new Z when it comes out ("an 'ultra portable' notebook with 13,1" LED screen in 16:9 aspect (1366x768 and 1600*900), Nvidia GPU with HDMI.")

I bought my Sony Vaio SZ more than a year ago and everything still works more than fine.... My brother has Macbook Pro and the HD failed a week after he got it.

macbook air sux and YES, you will look like a douche if you carry around an Macbook Air, fanboy....
Extremely expensive? I don't think so. Last year my sister got a 13" Core 2 Duo 2.0GHz, 2GB RAM, 160GB hard drive vaio for $1000. That is a pretty good deal.
2.1GHz White Macbook with the 2GB RAM option and the 250GB Hard drive option is $1349, $1249 if you're a student.
2.1GHz Vaio SZ (apparently the cheapest one they have) is $1899, on sale. While it does have the dedicated graphics built-in, is that REALLY worth $550-$650 more? Mobile broadband... subjective, but still, it's not worth the major price jump.
Wait a second, I just defended the pricing of an Apple product...
but then you have to deal with that retard O.S. im sorry im not into any media editing so i would never buy a mac on the other hand if i was a mac would be my first choice.
Hmm... interesting, especially with Sony giving their E3 keynote on Monday morning. New PSP maybe? I cant see anything that specifically states laptop on the teaser. Hmm... once more!
I hate when people say Sony Vaios are overpriced. your paying for style & performance. if i wanted an ugly piece of shit that had good specs, i'd buy a dell. The only laptops i consider overpriced are alienwares and voodoos. If they didn't make Vaio's and probably make the leap to Macbooks.
It looks like the Wizard of Oz Emerald City special Edition Power Button. So will green become the new blue when it comes to cool ways of lighting up your computer?
One thing you can count on Sony to have (at least with their smaller notebooks), are fantastic screens and great battery life. I love those two in my Vaio TZ, its 11.1" LED backlit screen blows away the Lenovo Ideapad U110 and Asus U2E, both with LED backlit 11.1" screens. Saw all three side by side at my Microcenter. : )
"are you kidding me? try watching a movie on a sony screen in a dark room. It makes a horrible light across the screen. My Asus F3sv pwns those screens"
vdogg89 = idiot
Sony TZ screen is one of the best out there right now..... enjoy watching many movies on your Asus F3sv's shitty screen.....
"All of these new nettops have me intrigued. I'm looking for a small, quiet and cheap PC to replace my aging tower in my home office, and all it really needs to do is load Microsoft Office, check email and surf the web. Is there a particular nettop that's better (or a better value) than another? I know it's a rather new segment, but hopefully someone has taken a chance on one already. Thanks!"

vdogg89, don't worry, not everyone is born with a brain :)

I won't use a laptop that isn't atleast 75% as powerful as my current desktop in all respects.
My PRIMARY source of entertainment is playing games so I don't really have a choice other that an 8800GTX SLi setup.

@fh: C'mon, every notebook can crack, even your pretty Vaio can. I'd rather pay for good support.
Kurian, really? I'm sure a 4850 Xfire setup will probably perform better ;)

Wow a lot of sony fanboys here...
But yeah sony is WAY overpriced...
@OneLove
thank you for ringing a mature and educated opinion to this post. i couldnt agree more with what you said.
Yeah, Sony may be expensive... but has Apple ever made a commercial THIS good/random?!?!?

Sony= Overpriced but worth the premium!
Sony's laptops look nice, but extremely expensive. Any good?
Extremely expensive? I don't think so. Last year my sister got a 13" Core 2 Duo 2.0GHz, 2GB RAM, 160GB hard drive vaio for $1000. That is a pretty good deal.
Cheaper than my Macbook, mine was $1,300, the only thing it beats your sister's laptop in is 2.16ghz vs 2.0ghz.
Plus I can just hack OS X on a non-apple laptop anyways....
Integrated HSDPA is hot.
Ripoff.
Redefined.
2.1GHz White Macbook with the 2GB RAM option and the 250GB Hard drive option is $1349, $1249 if you're a student.

The SZ has dedicated graphics as well as Intel integrated, able to switch the graphics.
Also has LED backlit screen, lighter weight than the Macbook, SD and memory stick slots, ExpressCard slot, PC Card Slot and WWAN.
: )
In addition to them being spec'd differently than you state, the cheapest SZ is less than $1500 on the Vaio site.
Where are you getting your info, out of your ass?
Damn, I sure would make a bad apple fanboy.
but then you have to deal with that retard O.S. im sorry im not into any media editing so i would never buy a mac on the other hand if i was a mac would be my first choice.
looks like the dell studio line laptops if you look at it, just my opinion
Refresh? I can't let you do that Dave.
would be nice if were the xbr 8 pricing info
And no doubt after that little teaser . . . .
. . . it will be another run of the mill laptop. =/
I haven't ever really been a fan of Sony laptops, I don't want to pay for style, I want to pay for functionality.
Which is why I recently ordered a Lenovo Thinkpad.
Hmm... interesting, especially with Sony giving their E3 keynote on Monday morning. New PSP maybe? I cant see anything that specifically states laptop on the teaser.

If you go to they sony site they have the laptop shown there if im not mistaken

Yeah they look nice but way overpriced. I heard the hardware is great but if you ever get a problem customer service sucks.
I think they have the laptop up on the sony site. >> Sony.com I might be mistaken though.
It looks like the Wizard of Oz Emerald City special Edition Power Button.
So will green become the new blue when it comes to cool ways of lighting up your computer?
This, of course, is the new PS3 with the 65nm RSX chip that runs so much cooler that it allowed a new smaller (more mobile) case design.
(doubt it)

I sure hope you are joking, the Vaio KILLS the Asus...
They'll actually reveal this somehow at 9:00PM ET on Monday? PM? That's kind of weird. Might as well reveal it Tuesday morning.
See:

Berlin has to wait until Tuesday.
