Samsung's i8510 inspires 8 megapixels of awe
Yeah, we know pixel count doesn't equal picture quality -- but like it or not, it looks like 8 megapixels are poised to become the new 5 megapixels in the upper echelon of the cameraphone world this year. Samsung's never a company to shy away from a challenge like that, and sure enough, details are emerging on a so-called i8510 smartphone that features S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2, 7.2Mbps HSDPA, FM radio, GPS, WiFi, and a whopping 16GB of internal storage -- not to mention a microSD slot that can take you up to 24GB. Oh, and there's the little matter of that camera, which features an dual LED flash and 120fps video capture at QVGA resolution. Add in DivX and DLNA certification, and we're kind of at a loss to figure out what's missing here. Boundless, unchecked hype, maybe? No word on a release date here just yet.

Mmm...The N96 finally gets some competition :]
iWant.
I doubt it.
I could care less about the pixel count, Whats the SENSOR SIZE?!?
@ loosely_coupled
Puny. It's a cell phone. Don't expect anything spectacular, is all I can say.
That high frame rate video capability and the 16 gig internal storage make it look like a pretty sweet phone, nonetheless.
Nokia got it's 8mp phone coming before SE's no idea when this Samsung is out thought. Nokia seem to have gotten the strategy with high end phones that they announce the phone and release it immediatly. Opposite to SE ;)
If the Nokia's 8mp is a disapointment this phone seem a worthy replace.
From Eldar(the guy who has every SE, Nokia phone year beofre anybody else.

"It seems that the C905 has it all, but at the same time you can’t get rid of the feeling that something isn’t right, something is missing. Over at Nokia they are probably jiggling right now, while preparing their “Hello again!” operation. Their offering with a mind-blowing megapixel count is set to launch right before the C905’s release day and it will start shipping immediately."
Oh look! It's another iPhone. A Samsung "i"8510. This phone has a heck of a lot of hardware in it. I'd love to check out it's weight and battery life. One thing it definitely has going for it is that memory card slot. I'd like to say it's crap, but it does have all the features to make it theoretically a fine handset.
You win some you lose some.
Yay! bring on the Nokia N105. Its about time some1 gives them the incentive to make the successor to the 2 year old N95. these specs are sweet though. no denying that.
They ARE making a new one... Did you manage to miss EVERYTHING about the n96 so far?
yes I have but I only consider it a marginal update to the n95 like the iphone 3g is to the original iphone. The N96 doesnt give a compelling reason to upgrade... so yeah im waiting on the next one with the 8 mp cam and bigger screen and faster specs... also i live in the states so dvb-h tv is a no go...
Fail.
"Dual LED" flash? That's just twice the failure. What's the point of 8MP without xenon flash?
Save the bashing till you see the flash in action.
Ever tried to record video with a Xenon flash?
you are missing some first place
WHAT? I thought 2mp was state-of-the-art?!
WHAT? You thought 2mp was state-of-the-art?!
Yeah. The papers and internets are full of people standing in line for 2mp phones....
sorry to be so pedantic, but there is only one internet.
carry on :-\
There are 2 internets. Just saying.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet2
wow all of you have an awful sense of humour except for the OP lol
So where can i log onto this Internet 2.0????
LOL, missed by 1 minute.
I'm surprise no one mentioned the iphone yet!!!
Opps!
They all have one, they're using it to do "serious business" and catch up on everything they missed while waiting in line...
I would have, but I was late, with a frustrated tone...
You are a retard. There is no way to make a "mistake" in a post point it out and act like it was an accident. You could have saved our time and yours by not posting at all.
@deyanimay
same for you... a whining disciplinarian has to be the ultimate paradox.
All this and more with a fantastic 5 minutes a battery life!
Seriously, won't this thing have to me a brick to support all that hardware?
shhhh... you can only criticize the iPhone...
Nope. Power management on the latest N series firmware is miles better than it was - which, let's face it, it had to be - so I assume SE will have picked up on this too.
i want now. dont care bout price. bring it to canada and i'm sold rogers or not.
Can you imagine the contract you'd have to sign up for this bad boy? I reckon 5 years minimum...
..caught myself doing the open-mouth stare.
I wouldn't exactly call this article "Boundless, unchecked hype" over the i8510, especially after the past two days...
Was trying to make a funny, but apparently failed.
Not so much funny as clever. But I apologize if I hurt your feelings Chris: I didn't mean for my comment to seem like a personal attack. It was just an observation of Engadget's concentration of coverage on a certain product released on Friday. Please don't take it the wrong way; after all, you only posted one article on the iPhone this weekend.
@ zomg0t
Oh, you hurt his feelings, all right. He's about to jump off a bridge now.
If this phone gets lines the night before it comes out and sells out to crowds of people world wide, then I'm SURE they'll cover any other cell phone (or even tech gadget) the same way...
Chris, I thought your joke was really well done, e specially in light of what's been recently going on in the mobile phone world.
In the immortal words of the Ruff Ryders, that collective font of contemporary urban wisdom, "fukk da haterz."
lol it's funny actually
*of *be
I know what you mean, but I suspect many won't.
"There is a LED flash on the Samsung i8510, which as a xenon one is highly appreciated in any cameraphone."
http://www.gsmarena.com/8_mp_samsung_i8510_primera_surfaces_has_it_all_but_the_kitchen_sink-news-546.php
Xenon LED?
lol
Where do you get that quote from? (And to those pesky grammarians, yeah I ended with "from," whatchu gonna do about it?) Maybe they've edited it because now it says the following:
"There is a LED flash on the Samsung i8510 - pity since a xenon one is highly appreciated in any cameraphone."
Why should it have to be a brick?
I know, I'm tired of all the iPhone news, but its w/e.
Think about it. The iPhone has 3G, Bluetooth, GPS, WiFi, Huge Gorgeous Touch Screen, 16GBs,. This has that and a little bit more, so I'm guessing it really won't be that big at all, especially seeing how small and energy efficient components are getting these days.
Just looking at that thing's home screen I can tell it would be like going back to WIn95 compared to the OS on the iPhone.
Did they miss the memo? People don't care about features if they aren't intuitive/enjoyable to use. Who cares if it has 8 megapixels when the phone looks like it's running on a decade old OS that relies on the same method of user input that's been around since the first brick phones rolled off the assembly line.
This is just another random Samsung phone that no one wants to develop (hardware OR software) for because it 1. won't be around in a year 2. very few people will actually buy it.
Do you hear about BMW and Mercedes developing full i8510 integration? Didn't think so.
the os is an after thought. i want to buy it and can adapt to anything. as well i don't want to afford the iphones puny hdd (not hdd) capacity. my 160g ipod works just fine. this has everything i want in a not laptop
that's one stupid comment on so many levels i lost the count. you have no way of knowing what the usability of this thing is based on one picture. s60 phones are sold 10-20 times the amount of, say iphone. i wouldn't call that exactly "no-one wants to buy", at least if you don't refer to "no-one wants to buy iphone". touchscreens have been around since the 60s and there's a good reason they never became dominant. self life of mobile phone models is slightly longer than 1 year, if you check the reviews on iphone, most of them say "nothing new here, move along". and it's really bmw&mercedes loss if they buy the hype of one marginal phone...
come holiday shopping season and these 8mpix phones from sony, samsung, lg and nokia are sold several times more than iphone.
Concerning a mandatory car leash/adaptor, I thought it was because without having stereo bluetooth capability, the iPhone would sound pretty mono... not fun on long trips ;(
sam,
iPhones sold in Q42007 = 1,119,000
S60 phones (at least 6 btw) 10 - 20 million units in in the same time?
Why do people used complete BS "stats" to make their opinion a "fact"?
@Justin
iPhones sold in Q42007 = 1,119,000
S60 phones (at least 6 btw) 10 - 20 million units in in the same time?
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Why the question mark?
http://www.canalys.com/pr/2008/r2008021.htm
35.5 million smartphones sold in Q42007. Symbian is 65% of that, so 22.75 million.
Uninformed Americans......
"S60 phones (at least 6 btw) 10 - 20 million units in in the same time?"
Nokia sold 14.6 million S60 smartphones in Q1 2008. I'm sure Samsung and LG sold a few more on top of that.
See: http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/news/item/7439_Nokia_tops_Q1_worldwide_smartp.php

Americans really really don't know the real lay of the land, do they...
Stupid comment system :(
@ surur
We may not know the 'lay of the land' (whatever that means); but the US pwns your shitty little country, whatever it is.
Clearly not when it comes to smartphones.
@surur
All I was trying to point out was the comparison of 1 phone (iPhone) to all the others... Also a phone with limited release in 2007 vs phone stats with no geographical representation. Stat "spin" is annoying to me. BUT, then two people put on citations, great an informed lively debate. Then you my bigot friend have to insult me based on my country... well played...
@Justin
You are the one who called a fact that is self-evident to the rest of the world a bullsh*t stat.
Thats how I knew you were American - the rest of the world knows Nokia is the biggest cellphone and smartphone company in the world by far. Call me bigoted if you want, but the fact is that you are an uninformed American.
They don't have to because you can transfer music through their Bluetooth systems.
Spoken like a true sheeple. Seriously, stop confusing the Apple marketing machine as reality, and this is coming from a macbook pro owner!! lol
People like nice interfaces, true, but I'm not jumping up and down for an iPhone, why? Because it would actually be a downgrade from my current phone, a 2 year old N95. The iPhone has an inferior camera, is more locked down (unless I void the warranty, no thanks), and is missing very basic things like MMS. Not to mention that in reality it doesn't really have true GPS, it's just assisted gps, which means it's a best guess between base stations, infact, my N95 does that for the first few seconds of turning a gps application on - that is until it locks on to enough satellites to get an accurate position.
This phone looks awesome - and I was excited to see a decent Samsung phone with what should be a more stable operating system than their U600 ones (love symbian), not only that, but it looks like the phone has better hardware features than my current phone too - so it's a possible upgrade for me in a month. I also know of somebody else who's just upgraded to this phone.... yet I don't know a single person who owns an iPhone yet in the UK. Odd....
There are already thousands of applications out there for this phone too btw, it's symbian, and like Windows - applications written for other S60v3 phones should work for it... so before the phone is out it's already more open and is more widely supported than the iPhone.
Oh - and BMW/Merc's dont need specific integration for phones that support the full Bluetooth stack, as their bluetooth enabled stereo systems should be able to stream music and control the phone via dashboard, unlike an iPhone, who didn't implement the full stack... why do I know this? Because my phone works perfectly with my stereo without the need for extra ports, and the iPhone wouldn't!! :)
"that relies on the same method of user input that's been around since the first brick phones rolled off the assembly line" - my favourite comment, as I assume you are using the tried and tested qwerty keyboard interface to spout your opinions - don't you know they've been using this crappy push-button interface since the days of the typewriter!! :)
umm WiFi without QWERTY is kinda pointless imo..but other than that the specs are great!
Alex is absolutely right: no one (other than, you know, us technologically savvy consumers) cares how good a phone is if it isn't popular. That's why we don't get good phones; companies don't want to sell their advanced and superior phones in the United States if dumbass consumers are going to end up buying the iPhone anyway just because everyone loves the marketing agency that's selling it.
actually... i saw the above picture... and i thought it was a joke based on something circa 2000.
if this were a girl and i were single... i'd run away hard and fast.
Add QWERTY and it sounds like my next-next phone (after HTC Touch Pro)
Please, just make love to me now!
Eww.
What goes into a "First" post:
"First"
"Shitty, obvious, pointless comment"
Knock it off, no one's impressed.
Engadget should ban the people who post these.
I can tell you what's missing even without touching the phone... A decent operating system! I still rage over having receiving texts on my samsung with a telephone number in them and having NO WAY to transfer the number over to the address book other than writing it down on a piece of paper and then re-entering it into the phone. That experience has ensured that I will NEVER EVER buy a Samsung again!
This thing runs Symbian OS, not the usual Samsung proprietary OS.
The iPhone is so so much better on so many levels - and when it has a better camera, video capture and expandable memory it is hard to imagine how it could be better!
You can use that argument with any phone. If (insert phone name) had a bigger screen, faster processor, better camera, better os it would be better than this phone
Umm the screen resolution sucks, so no sale. Sustained browsing at merely at QVGA is annoying.
no-it takes 120 fps video at QVGA res-so it could and prolly it more to start
Well when iphone has 3mp norm will be 8mp and they have surely catched some of the OS side in the Nokia, SE, Samsung side plus(mostly looking at the Nokia when it's symbian 5th eidtion comes out) Iphone needs to change at some point too Thought it's good to hear that you have found a perfect phone. I'm still looking =(
What i wan't to see from the Nokia's super device is like Johan above said is better screen reso! Screen reso will be much higher at the point when Symbian 5th edition starts rolling, but i really wan't to see these S60 3th edition phones to even go back to N80 reso or something because before that gets fixed i'm not changing my ipod touch + N82 combo.
The n80 screen is lovely, I don't know why they went back to qvga, although I suspect cost has something do do with it. All phones seem to have blocky text after using the N80.
Probally most to do with the competition + cost as no one else didn't go that way either and Nokia can still have 60% market share on smart phones and in a same time keep the costs lower.
That's really a shame to us consumers, but hopefully Samsung starts pushing higer res phones on their feaure packed smart phones because i can't see SE doing it. Yes i know X1, but firstly it's WM device that might do something for the sales and i can't imagine that it would sell that good to even top N95 current sales(ok maybe that's a bit too much ;)).
Fingers crossed for higher res screens with the Nokia's 8mp phone or at least in some other devices than E90 to have some quality screens before 5th edition.
"S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1" ????
No, that's Feature Pack 2, you can even see it on that picture.
Whoops! Thanks.
"It's a samsung tho"
"It's a samsung tho"
@Greg,
Way to not being uptight buddy.
Oooh, I am sorry I wasted precious pixels on your gold plated 600X800 monitor. And your reply is even more useless than mine, at least I commented on the article itself.
Knock it off, no one's impressed.
Engadget should ban the people who post these.
wow, I think I'm in love. I wonder which US carrier will cripple this phone when they get it?
No US carrier will get this, its too good.
If it's unlocked GSM would it even matter?
@7on
Sure will if it doesn't support US 3G frequencies--won't be able to use high speed data.
alcheko. please fall down the stairs and die.
Please!
Unless you're going to be blowing up your pictures beyond wallet size, this 8 mega pix swag is just a gimmick.Total overkill but a trick pony to get more sells out of tried and true, yet tired ass tech.
Camera phones are not for professional photogs anyway.
Totally pointless. Go buy a $10 second hand 2001 2mpixel camera, and you'll get better quality pics than with this. All these clueless people drooling over the "8" headline figure are amusing - ffs 8mpixels needs a dslr sized sensor or you'll have noise hell.
Camera phones have barely improved from 1.3mpixel days - they're still useless cos of the microscopic sensor size and cruddy optics.
Oh really? Go compare the photos taken on a Nokia N82 to photos taken on a Nokia 6630. Things have come a LONG way in a few years.
alechko, your wit is to die for.
So it's a camera with a phone built in?
Almost as good as my n82, not only if this had a xenon flash :)
Almost as good as my n82, now only if this had a xenon flash :)
Engadget missed TWO important features ,
This phone can be attached to a 5.1 Sound System through 3.5mm jack also this phone have a dedicated 3D graphics accelerator !
I agree. Best feature of the G800 and G810 and they eliminated it. Bummer...
nice gadgets. i have a cool one i'd like to send in to you, if that would be cool.
It's missing a slider keyboard and WM 6.1 Pro.
y is everyone sooooo obsessed with all these new phones the take the iPhone. Since the iPhone 3g came out no one gives a damn bout the old iPhone..same with the samsung. Trust me in about a month samsung would have brought out a better phone...??am I not right?? My £63 camera cost £55. It's 10 megabites....???WTF.....???
